brown and white vol 77 - no 49 8660331 bethlehem pa tuesday may 10 1966 lcb raids the grotto by dan gladding pennsylvania state liquor control board agents raided the grotto a south bethlehem bar friday night and took approxi mately eight minors who were drinking soft drinks ln the dining area to the police station for questioning according to james r adams 66 adams said the raid took place at approximately 10:45 p.m in the grotto at 336 adams st adams and his fiance marsha l kaiser were sitting in the corner of the dining area near the door where miss kaiser a minor was drinking a coke a police officer and an lcb agent entered the establishment then entered the bar areai the agent returned to the police offi cer and said something to the effect of " let's check them adams said the police officer then stopped outside and returned with two or three lcb agents and three or four detectives the agents chec ked the identification of every person in the bar who appeared under 21 years of age they rounded up about eight minors all of whom had been drinking soft drinks in the restaurant area adams said included inthe eight were two girls who had been waiting for a take-out order the minors were then taken outside and put in a paddy wagon for the trip to the police station adams was not told to enter the truck but he accompanied miss kaiser who was told to enter the truck in the squad room of the police station the group was asked if anyone was not a minor and adams being 21 was asked to leave miss kaiser and the rest of the persons were then ques tioned by an lcb agent who according to miss kaiser treated her in a very surly high handed manner he acted as if he was king as if he could dump on anybody he tried to project a james bond image she said all the minors were questioned by the agents and were asked to fill out questionnaires the ques tionnaires in addition to asking for name address and age asked such questions as " who was the physician attending your birth how many times in the past year have you been in the place in question dm they ask you for an id " did you sit at the bar and were you asked to sign a statement of your age miss kaiser said after they had signed the questionnaires the minors were told that they were not allowed to enter a place that served ale hollc beverages even though it might be a restaurant without their parents one of the minors asked what the distinction was between the grotto and a place such as howard johnson the evasive answer miss kaiser reported was that agents never raid before nine or ten o'clock under fraternity and the clearance of phi sigma kappa with respect to the april 18 harrass ment of safety officers on campus the action follows the fining of three other fraternities including social probation for one after investigation of the harrass ment of the campus police and bethlehem safety officers who were extinguishing a campus brush fire the university approved the action taken bv lec which requested that delta tau delta be fined 100 for igniting fireworks while safety officers were extinguishing tiie brush fire that phi sigma kappu be absolved of anv part in the incident though earlier reports hud erroneously involved this group university president dr vv demlng lewis stated in a long letter to all ol the student living groups at lehigh i liave refrained from making a public statement about the incident f april 1 until the appropriate judiciary agencies of the university had made their investigations and derisions under established procedures now i wish fo exppess to the students at lehigh mv distress that a small number of students would eriiilt themselves to bring discredit to the entire student body " i expect that at all times the students will show proper courtesy and respect for our own campus policemen as well as for city police and firemen this is an obligation of a citizen in anv community i expect too that students will cooperate in every way requested to assist firemen and policemen in the performance of their duties surely this means the absence of harrass ment at all tunes in all forms although i have been associated with lehigh for less than two years i have developed great pride in this university in tiie achieve ments of its students faculty and alumni in the significant contributions being made to higher education on many fronts bill lowe leads the jazz moderns in last friday's concert in phillipsburg n.j the jazz group teamed with the university band in a concert presented by the alpha auxiliary of the warren hospital 50 to get awards at flagpole day leadership in all university fields of endeavor will be recog nized monday may 16 at 11:30 a.m when the centennial elag pole day ceremonies take place eifty citations representing leadership athletics and scho larship will be awarded to mem bers of the faculty and student iiody dr w deming lewis univer sity president will head the list of officials scheduled to present awards the master of ceremonies will again lie prof john steckbeck assistant direc tor of physical education wil liam b leckonby director of the athletic department will in troduce the speakers a special feature of this year's program n honor of the centennial will ie the presence of the univer sity band and glee club the chief presentation will lie the bosey belter leadershlpcup ci ven to the outstanding leader in the senior cia.ss last year the cup was presented to rhodes scholar v roger dlgilio of phil adelphia another highly-valued honor is the eastern college athletic conference award for athletic - scholarship prowess eric yonker 65 received last year's e.c.a.c award as well as the ernesta drinker cup and medal for being the most out standing member of the varsity lacrosse squad among the other important awards are the btea theta i'l cup for best all-around athletic achievement the chi pal basket ball award and the bruce thom pson basketball award all of which
