brown and white bethlehem pa - friday may 13 1966 vol 77 - no 50 p;s«.s 8660331 flagpole day to add four new awards fifty awards for leadership ln all fields will be presented during the annual flagpole day ceremonies on monday beginning at 11:30 a.m elliot tepper chairman of the flagpole day com mittee and prof john steckbeck assistant director of the department of physical education have com pleted final plans for the program this year's activities will be divided into three parts the first will consist of presentation of awards for athletic excellenct , the second part will include presentation of specla lwards including gifts and announcement of the results of the elections for class officers and the third and final part will consist of presentation of the campus leadership award and the singing of the alma mater of the awards to be presented for the first time this year several are of particular interest the intramural athletic managers trophy will be award ed for outstanding service in the best interests of fellow living unit members who participated in intramural competition the intramural athletic group improvement trophy will lie awarded to " the living group which displayed greatest improvement the samuel t harleman scholarship trophy will be given by the brothers of phi delta theta fraternity to the " frat ernity pledge class which most improves its schol astic performance the prof bruce h banner memorial trophy will be awarded to the science department dis playing the greatest all-around growth a special souvenir booklet has been prepared in limited quantity in honor of centennial flagpole day by prof steckbeck it will have an engraved cover of brown and white and will list the winners of all awards since 1914 the date of the establish ment of the awards those presenting each award feature speakers and special stories concerning the establishment of certain awards haw photo by butt it's a sign of the times-election time is here and the typical student is eager to learn about the men and the is sues it certainly is disappointing to see mail in your mail box and find that it's not a long-awaited letter dormitory contracts seen as breakable next year's dormitory resi dents will still have to sign room contracts for the entire year however it may not be particularly difficult for the de termined student to break his lease after one semester donald stewart 66 chairman of the ifc committee on resid ence halls contracts has revealed that at a meeting of the committee and members of the dean team late last march dr charles seidle vice president for admin istration indicated that the administration recognizes the problem and would be more liberal in releasing students from their contracts last january seidle was instrumental in enabling nine stu dents to move out of the resid ence halls without suffering fin ancial loss this action which went against the position main tained by clarence b campbell dean of residence was greeted by a formal resolution of con demnation by rhc stewart said preston parr dean of student life and willi am quay assistant dean of stu dent life were receptive to the ifc position at the meeting and that he expects favorable action from them quay ls on record supporting the single semester lease which had been in effect until three years ago at the meeting " campbell was belllgerant and evasive and would not really listen to us stewart commented oh yeah he was the one with the red posters it doesn't make any difference what basis you use but it is important that you get out and vote elections close tonight at 7 p.m results will be announced at the flagpole day ex ercises on monday flagpole schedule first class 8:10-8:50 a.m second class 9-9:40 a.m third class 9;50-10:30a.m fourth class 10:40 - 11:20 a.m lunch in university center 10:30-11:15 a.m flagpole day exercises 11:30-12:30 lunch in university center 12:30-1:30 p.m fifth class 12 : 50-1 : 30 p.m sixth class 1:40-2:20 p.m seventh , class 2 : 30 - 3:10 p.m eighth class 3:20-4 p.m rhc questions reserve fund use rhc passed a motion tuesday night asking arcadia to define more clearly what is to 1 done with funds obtained through the recently - established arcadia reserve fund the motion stemmed from a discussion among memtvers of the council concerning rhc's representation on arcadia several mem bers felt that the council should be better informed of the actions of rhc's representative to arcadia james winchester 68 rhc's arcadia representative mentioned the passage of the arcadia reserve fund provision and this touched off the debate on the motion winchester explained that the aim of the fund is to help student organizations which may lose money sponsoring concerts the pri mary source of revenue for the fund would be a 10 per cent tax on profits up to 1,000 and 15 per cent on all excess profits provided there was a total profit of at least 250 from student sponsored all campus events debate began when some council members asked that rhc come out against the provision winchester pointed out that opposition on his part now would be futile it was then requested that a motion be passed which would make a strong plea that arcadia define whet is to be done with the reserve fund at this point a motion was made that a provision be included within the previous motion to establish a publications committee which would provide information of rhc meetings and events to all campus news media the motion in its entirety was passed unanimously 67 opposes solon concert proposol the junior class voiced its opposition to an arcadia proposal to impose a levy on profits from concerts on campus at a cabinet meet ing wednesday evening a resolution condemning t lie arcadia motion was approved by a vote of 25-4 in a discussion of the proposed levy tiie cabinet members blasted arcadia for not having sufficiently publicized the proposal in advance some members argued that money made by the class should be ke[>t ■by the class other memters feared tliat arcadia might t>e able to use the funds to stage competitive concerts arcadia president jeffrey h kapell 68 who presented the motion dismissed the complaints as being unfounded and not based on fact the funds from the levy will be used to backstop concerts fin ancially so that campus organiza tions can get better entertain ment for concerts at less risk said kapell he further stated that the money from the levy will be put in a special fund for backing up concerts and arcadia will not t>e able to use the money for its own purposes evaluation forms the it-u'llirn for return - ing the course evaluation forms has been set for may 21 the student evaluation booklet needs a high per centage of returns to have an effective publication please cooperate and re turn these forms
