brown and white mamsaßssma bethlehem pa friday september 23 1966 v01.78 no 2 866-0331 revised fire rules on one year trial residence hall fire fines regulations have been revised by clarence campbell dean of resi dence residence hall council president henry berger said at the rhc meeting tuesday the major revision in the new regulation is a lowering of fines when the responsibility for damage is not determined pre viously the section concerned was fined 50 for the first offense and 100 and 150 for successive offenses under the new regula tions each individual ln the section will be charged 50 cents for the first offense and 1 2 and 3 for successive offenses another new feature in the new regulations is that the dean of residence may waive a section fine where extenuating circum stances exist berger noted that the new regulations are on a trial basis for this year and if there is any increase ln misuse of fire equipment a return to higher penalties could be expected the new regulations follow petitions to the board of trustees last spring by arcadia and rhc those groups expressed the opinion that the system of fines for damage to fire equipment was unjust and excessive the board of trustees gave president w deming lewis the authority to change the regu lations president lewis then left it to campbell to draw up a new set of regulations also discussed at the meeting were suggestions for an ex pansion of the open section periods when women would be permitted in the residence halls maid service in the residence halls has been curtailed instead of making beds six days a week the maids have been instructed to make beds only twice a week as a result of the labor shortage in the lehigh valley and the university is having trouble getting maids according to berger a proposal to have the maids city needs volunteers for tutorial project with the beginning of the school year the bethlehem tutorial project is swinging into action once again this year with more ambitious goals than those in the past and needing more volunteers to carry out the various programs the project was founded several years ago by lehigh students to provide tutoring for under privileged youngsters about 25 lehigh students are involved each year working without outside help in the past contacts in the community were few and community cooperation was negligible consequently last year the tutorial project appealed to the education committee of the bethlehem com munity civic league for assistance ln recruiting tutees and setting up orientation meetings for the lehigh students involved the education committee headed by dr charles the bethlehem tutorial project be gins operations again this year with lehigh volunteers tutor underprivileged children in the community hare project president ted breton 68 discusses a problem with garfield smith pass fail option goes into effect a pass-fail grading system has been approved unanimously by the faculty and has gone into effect this semester the new regulation reads a student may elect ln a total of no more than four courses to be graded on a pass-fail rather than letter grade basis provided that he has achieved at least junior status is presently in good stand ing has the consent of the instructor offering the course or the appropriate department chairman and the approval of his registration adviser the selection of pass-fail grading shall be made by the student at pre-registration no course may be chosen under this procedure that satisfies any part of the requirement for graduation in the courses so chosen the instructor shall report only a grade of pass p or fail f to the registrar a passing grade shall apply to the student's graduation requirements but shall not be used in the computation of his cumulative average a fall grade shall be computed ln the normal manner under this system the student surrenders an equity to a letter grade a,b,c,d if he passes the course the committee on educational policy listed the justification the purpose of this system is to encourage academic experimentation by students by relieving them in a numl>er of courses from grade pressures while sn individual registered in s pass-fsil course is expected to participate to the usual extent in the exercises of the course he will be less deterred from taking difficult courses outside of his major interests from fear of depressing his cumulative average in an atmosphere ln which great emphasis is placed b&w photo by yewdall glenn hoffman lehigh radio network operations direc tor and bob jakielski long lines director lay cable thr ough steam tunnels between the power plant and physics building in preparations for airing all nine football games over wlvr arcadia to back november dance in its first meeting of the year wednesday arcadia xx voted to sponsor an alumni - undergraduate dance the saturday of lafayette weekend in the hotel bethlehem arcadia also moved that a proposal be made to the administration that freshman open sections l>e permitted from 1 to 12 p.m on any saturday night a committee was also formed to study the possibility of start ing a bus service between lehigh and cedar crest the lafayette weekend dance as proposed by brooks zug president of the senior class will follow along the lines of the dance held during fall house party last year i don't think we will make it in as big a scale as last houseparty however as i assume many students won't care to give up their parties to attend ug said we plan to get a good perhaps local band and perhaps a good rock n roll band the dance will rent most of the public rooms of the hotel but there will be more tcbles than were at the houseparty dance our feeling is that upwards of 200 couples of alumni will be a good showing zug noied adding that 800 or 900 under graduate couples will be considered a successful student showing harvey york president of arcadia added that bus service would be provided between the hotel and the campus as a service for freshmen and other participants without cars a proposal from the audience that bus service be set up between cedar crest and lehigh for such events as lectures concerts and colloquiums was sent to com mittee for discussion arcadia also proposed that frosh to hear gillespie at hop tomorrow night tomorrow night the freshman class and various girls schools will t>e " mixed at the annual dink hop ln grace hall matt gillespie and his orches tra along with the castaways will provide the music douglas cedar crest muhlenberg,cen tenary and possibly rosemount will provide the girls the affair which lasts from 8 to 12 p.m will cost each freshman 3 all 400 tickets have already been sold supposedly there will be an equal number of kir is present the gryphon society which sponsors the affair will use any profits for freshmen activities throughout the remaining school year members of the society will also serve as guards for the hop to keep upperclassmen out and the girls in see campbell page 6 see quad page 9 see student page 10 see pass page 9
