social juniors working with enthusiasm to put out crackerjack annual publication lehigh harriers not discouraged by first failure bray still out 1 wenty-five elected at wednes day meeting — g l millar chosen president eleven from pittsburg will play here determined to win to bring band squad feels effect of good coaching as jim murphy takes charge race on home course big delegation arrives brown and white confident of victory despite last week's bitter pill at a meeting of the sophomore cotillion club on wednesday night 25 members of the sopho more class were elected to mem bership tentative plans for a dance on friday night the 12th of novem ber were laid this date being decid ed best inasmuch as a number of house parties are being planned for that time the following officers were elect ed president g l millar first vice-president j wentz second v ice president j m read secre tary j h opdyke and treasurer h p palmer the names of the men elected are given below darsey sayre dußois wight mitman lewis voss asbury warriner hendrickson stafford o'keefe carlisle graff bray kennedy ferguson beale platt hogg graham fitch israel todd yott honorary members : riley stoll boyd chew randall houston hobbs peterson piersol pre-medicals organize the mercersburg club held its first meeting of the year in drown hall last tuesday night there were several important matters dis cussed the most interesting of which was a banquet the meet ing was presided over by the presi dent t b frasier 22 with 12 members present after a general discussion of the matter of dues and membership the matter of the banquet was brought up several dates were considered and it was finally decided to hold it saturday dec 4 at kurtz restaurant a committee composed of f f wright 23 and a w hicks 23 was appointed by the president to arrange for the banquet and to see that all the members get proper no - tices of it it was also decided that the president of mercersburg acad emy dr ervine and the professor of latin prof w a mclaughlin be invited to the banquet mercersburg has a very large representation at lehigh this year probably more than any other pre paratory school there are about 31 men here r-t present from mercersburg who are as follows : r adams f ad ams bell alwine buckley evans fox gray harper anderson lanigfit mcelvaine kavanagh nortjhrup muirhead neely palmer pierson sanford bowman buller coxe frazier greenwald heit man light simpson rudy hicks and wright membership drive well under way although the soccer game last saturday resulted in a 2-1 defeat for lehigh the showing of the team was very pleasing to all interested in its success the squad which took the field did not include in the lineup capt gonzales newlin desch or brewer all of whom are veterans of last year's team fur thermore the team had not played together as a unit before the team had the right spirit and fight however and they made up in these qualities what they lacked in skill and teamwork but in the end su perior skill and teamwork won out last monday coach murphy was on hand and he spent the time in teaching the correct plays and in trying to build up a forward line inspired by his example the for wards were soon finding the goal and the goal keeper had a busy af ternoon trying to stop the fusillade of shots which were directed at the goal then there was a short scrimmage after some more prac tice of this sort the team will soon gain a large measure of the tech nique needed to win games tomorrow there will be a regu lar blue mountain league game with the coke works team this will be another hard fought game but with the return of the varsity men who were away last week the team is looking forward with con fidence to a better result the first intercollegiate game is to be played on nov 6 at philadel phia with girard college the latter has a very good team this year and they have been winning consistently in their games with teams in and around philadelphia the soccer men are now concen trating all their efforts in develop ing an offense and defense which will bring a victory to lehigh in its first intercollegiate contest mr h l kingman to talk at y meet the 1922 epitome board has started on its task of putting out the best annual that lehigh has ever had the board with this high ideal as its aim will not be able to accomplish its ends without the co-operation of the entire student body and it is hoped that any man having any suggestions for the im provement of the epitome will make such suggestionis known this year each man on the board will be responsible for one particu lar section of the book c a con nell has charge of the athletic sec tion and maxwell gleln is endeav oring to make a unique resume of student social activities c p goodimg is in charge of the faculty section and c h jagels is collect ing snap shots pertaining to all phases of college life any per son taking pictures at games or around the campus are earnestly asked to turn their prints to c h jagels and receive remuneration for the same the entire staff is bent on pub lishing a feature section which will keenly interest every lehigh man and any suggestions for such a sec tion will be gladly accepted by the editor r w eastman 22 or any members of the board the business end of the epitome board is also active the coaipeti tiom for men of the sophomore class is now in full swing more men starting out this year than ever before twelve reporting for the work national advertising is the main idea and any man in col lege who can offer constructive ad vice will help by giving these sug gestions to the manager n p sanborm or to a competitor there will be three officers pick ed this year for the business staff : manager advertising manager and circulation manager amy ad ditional men wishing to start are refered to n p sanbom at the psi upsilon house visitors defeated n y u last week taking first second and third places undaunted by the defeat at lafayette last saturday lehigh's hall and dalers have been training earnestly all week for the meet to morrow with rutgers the strength of the crimson team is unknown except for their victory over n y u last saturday when they took first second and third places the race tomorrow will be held on the st luke's course ending between the halves of the carnegie tech game at the goal post at the far end end o<f taylor field this feature has proven a welcome addition to the football games and will be con tinued for the remainder of the season rodgers has been forced to discontinue his track work until spring owing to a leg injury and bray and bsterson are not expect ed to compete against rutgers nevertheless coach kamaly is con fident that bis squad will make a good showing and has entered the following men : fancher gerlach pumphrey erb macnulty vanißil liard brugmanni and fischer the first seven lehigh men to finish tomorrow will probably be selected to make the trip to pitts burg for the carnegie tech meet on nov 6 manager a j bar thold is endeavoring to arrange a meet with the muhlenberg harriers for thursday nov 18 over the st luke's course the cross country intercollegi ate championship will be held on the st luke's course on saturday nov 27 the following colleges and universities having entered teams : lehigb lafayette rutgers muh lenberg swarthmiore delaware and n y u last year lehigh and lafayette tied for first place with bucknell taking third scimitar men chosen notice sophomores the carnegie tech team which hails from the smoky city will be our opponent for tomorrow's game and it is reported that they are coming with a strong team and with a determined effort to beat lehigh and with a much better team this year and a real snappy backfield featuring brumbaugh their star fullback and a pair of fast end's in hable and mcclean they expect to turn the tables in previous games brumbaugh has displayed his ability as a good line plunger and a consistent ground gainer and also wierman another dependable backfield man who starred in their game against cincinmatti the weight of the linemen and of the backfield are slightly in fa vor of tech their average weight for the line is 174 pounds to our 170 pounds and their backfield of 154 pounds to our 150 pounds we also have another set of backfield men who are light but extremely fast and they average 140 pounds one of the features will be the presence of their band they are coming along with a bunch of real rooters to give their team the prop er support as this game will be the acid test for tech there will be a big number of students and tech supporters on hand our men are in tip-top condition and are fully ready for the battle they are not taking any chances of losing this game and they are going to fight ance that the music will be of first class quality it is hoped the dance will be well attended as the policy of the comimittee as to the fre quency of future dances will be de cided by this turnout notice on friday afternoon at 4 o'clock there was organized a new society at lehigh composed oi the men taking the pre-medical course here s kaman 23 acting as tempor ary chairman called the meeting to ord,er as it was be who conceived the idea of this organization he told of the necessity of this society at lehigh the advantages which would accrue therefrom and made a plea that all the pre-meds co operate with the officers of the so ciety and thus have an organization which would be both a credit to lehigh and to each and every member after concluding his remarks a general discussion was held regard ing what officers should be selected and it was decided to 1 have a presi dent vice-president treasurer and secretary nominations were then opened for these positions and the following men to him but that he could see how beneficial it would be to the mem to have physicians come to lecture to them as it is in line with the profes sion the men are studying discussion took place as to a suitable name for the society and several names were suggested out of these was selected the lehigh pre-medical society by which name it will hereafter be known a committee to draw up a con stitution was appointed by the president consisting o>f j m con roy 23 chairman c m bahnson 23 l h kline 21 p weiss 21 it was decided that an initiation fee of 1 would be levied upon every member business meetings will be held every week on friday afternoon at 4 o'clock at first or until all the business of organization is com pleted the next meeting of the society is today at 4 o'clock notice has been lately given to the members of the sophomore class that candidates are wanted for assistant manager of lacrosse but as yet only two have reported they are d m laugbton and n i guthrie the present managers desire to have at least seven men out for this important and popular office all those who have any intentions oif tryinig for the assist ant managership should report as soon as possible to either manager g l childs or assistant manager l l drew at lacrosse practice held monday tuesday and thurs day afternoons other reports from the lacrosse squad are very satisfactory prac tices and admitted at this en trance students will use the up per gate there will be a meeting of the sophomore class at 11 o'clock this morning in packer hall the con stitution committee appointed last year consisting of wight ellis and lapp have completed this work and the constitution is to be laid before the class for discussion and adoption several other matters of importance are to be discussed and 1 every sophomore is requested to attend the drive for members which was started last monday by the y m c a is getting under way and it is hoped that by the end of the week at least 200 new members will be added to the lists a can vass of all the living groups is be ing conducted with the help of vol unteers most of whom are on the various committees of the y m c a these men deserve much cred it for their efforts and especially chairman bailey under whose di rection the campaign is being con ducted a list of the living groups and the men who will visit them is as follows : taylor hall section
