lehigh university brown and white 866-0331 vol 78 - no 30 bethlehem pa - friday february 17 1967 admission head denies discrimination policies by john seitz recent statements by student leaders alleging discrimination m the admission policies of the university contain according to samuel missimer director of admissions no truth whatsoever campus leaders such as herb ford of the students for democratic society have claimed that admission policies do not permit the university to receive a cross section of students and that the more liberal ones are not encouraged to apply missimer stressed that the only discrimination practiced is academic discrimination the university has a large number of applicants for the business and engineering colleges because he said lehigh graduates of these colleges have been extremely successful m their chosen careers according to missimer the most serious problem for the admissions office is a lack of scholarship funds this situation will be partially remedied by the addition of 20 national merit scholarships next fall he said without ample scholarship money missimer claimed that it is hard to attract the able under privileged students he cited this as one of the reasons why there are few negro students , and added that few negros desire to study engineering progress is being made m recruiting negro students how ever he said due m part to " the cooperation of the negroes now studying here missimer does not subscribe to the belief that lehigh students are stereotyped " the admissions office he said looks at individuals and the different influences which have effected them he added each freshman class represents a good cross section of students typical of high school seniors throughout the united states rhc votes uembers concert ticket refund the residence halls council passed a motion tuesday that will reimburse all council members up to 7 for their animals-simon and garfunkel concert tickets after a heated debate the motion was defeated but later recalled henry t berger president of rhc reprimanded council for introducing and considering such a motion and dr robert sprague faculty advisor to rhc walked out of the meeting before the recall vote passed the motion reasons given for the reimbursement included the fact that rhc has made a sizable profit on the concert and that council members deserved this gesture m view of the work they have done in other business it was announced that lehigh will host the third annual conference of the north atlantic association of college and university residence halls this coming september naacurh founded at lehigh ln 1964 ls an organization which seeks an effective communication network among member schools communication coordination has been difficult among schools since the association's formation and hence the theme of the forthcoming conference will be " problems ln communications the council voted to bar alcoholic beverages at all spring open houses for freshmen m order to more adequately interview prospective members in other action it was announced that revision of the rhc disciplinary code will be done under the leadership of james stamoolis 67 vice president of rhc council also voted to pay a sum of 65 for sheets used by some residence hall groups mostly freshman m making banners for lafayette weekend change is key to coeducation by donald palmer " the whole matter of coeducation at lehigh comes down to a question of whether or not you want change declared prof robert williamson last wednesday speaking at a panel discussion m the osbourne room sponsored by the american association of university professors williamson added that lehigh's traditional conservatism would be given a shot ln the arm by the presence of coeds williamson was one of three panelists who favored the i mph mentation of coeducation at lehigh dean claude dlerolf of muhlenberg college also favors such a move in 1957 dlerolf saw muhlenberg change from an all male to a coeducational school since then we've been very happy with the change he said dlerolf discussed some of the many considerations that preceded the change however the only change made m curiculum was m the area of elementary education no changes were effected tn ihe extra-curricular activities prof eli schwartz of the department of finance discussed the economic feasibility of coeducation he stated flatly that coed dormitories could be erected at a zero outlay to the university . he cited federal state and private loans as a means for subsidizing construction prof ray armstrong of the english department took a negative view of coeducation and women m general he asked whether admitting women to lehigh ls a movement toward a positive goal armstrong said that at lehigh such a move would l>e like " ripping the living viscera out of lehigh and what it stands for he added that many engineers probably disliked the everlasting blandishments and inconveniences of the other sex chester page of the alumni committee presented several other negative points he said that an alumni consensus was definitely against coeducation at lehigh according to the committee women would not contribute academically if the school is to he enlarged page said that it should he done wtth an increased male enrollment not the admission of females the main point of controversy was whether coeds would contribute to lehigh academically williamson and dlerolf felt that women would strengthen our arts school considerably armstrong and page said that women m our school would may be a long way from being realized but at least some of the more imaginative souls on campus arc thinking about it cia aids student group to counteract communism 9 the central intelligence agency has been financing certain activities of the national student association since the early 1950's according to statements made early this week by the association's leaders and u.s officials eugene groves president of the association which ls the largest student organization m the country reported monday that cia funds had been used to help finance the association's inter national ac 1 1 v 1 ties including sending representatives to student congresses abroad and funding student exchange programs the state department acknow ledged groves report , but privately defended the subaidies as necessary to counteract the subversive and propaganda activities of communist students who were also receiving sub stantial official financial help bob walters former brown 4 white editor who exposed the story for the washington star reported that the cia funds paid between 50 and 85 par cent of nsa'a yearly budget in the early 1960*8 it waa further reported that aa much aa 400,000 m cia funds waa channelled to nsa through foundations during these yeara but grove refused to name the foundations according to a statement of groves and the organization's two other elected officers the relationship originated m 1952 mainly becauae tha cia believed that a strong american union of studenta waa m the national interest the three officers also said that the relationship was ( b*w photo during world war ii this was a restricted area map ro om located m the basement of coppee hall behind the men's room il is still so classified apparently for use by rotc units on campus it is not known whether tangible reasons exist for the restricted classification but the room could hardly be called secure an unof ficial source said the room is going to be moved they need more room *' but nobody seems to
