activity—closed temporarily yesterday the temporary closure was announced at about 1:30 p.m by everett teal director when he posted a typewritten sign on his central office door saying ■this office is closed teal apparently closed his office after arguments broke out ln christ mas - saucon's hallway between students objecting to a protest display against dow chemical company's manufacture of napalm and members of sds a campus organization opposed to the war ln vietnam earlier in the day at 11 a.m a ruckus occurred when some 12 unidentified stu dents burned the mimeographed broadsides distributed by sds outside the building then moved into the hallway to rip one of the protest signs in half sds last thursday had organized a similar protest against dow chemical's recruiters only to learn that they weren't due on campus until yesterday on friday an agreement was made between dean of student life preston parr and sds which would allow the group to display literature and photographs on a table in xmas-saucon " because of the crowded conditions in the xmas-saucon hallway the agreement read use of the hall is limited for all groups to unmanned literature tables access to the table on a reasonable basis to permit replacement of literature ts acceptable but discussion should take place elsewhere during the early afternoon hours the sds table attracted many visitors who argued vietnam philosophies loudly herbert ford president of sds explained " there was nothing we could do about it he said we provoked the noise and we couldn't have stopped it if we wanted to ford said that due to the traffic sds members surrounded the table to protect it possibly a light rain at the time also contributed to the crowd in the hallway at this point assistant dean of student life william l quay summoned by teal intervened and after conversing with ford said that if the other members of sds would leave he would permit ford to guard the table ford said ford admitted that he had broken the agreement not to staff the table however according to ford teal told him that testing and counseling wouldn't open unless they left and that no students would be interviewed teal then placed a typewritten sign on the placement center door saying " this office is closed quay at this time told ford that he would have to move his table out of the hall within 10 minutes which ford did meanwhi le three campus police officers arrived but the action was over " the action i was taking was to insure that normal activities could continue quay said later teal explained his concern over the problem saying we perform a service for the students and i want to afford everyone an equal opportunitv to use our facilities the sd6 literature in part claimed " dow is directly contributing to the destruction and maiming of hundreds of thousands of vietnamese women and children by their production of the napalm used by the u.s in the vietnamese war we feel that the napalm bombing of civilians is an atrocity of the moat vile form balance gives matmen crown by peter n littman the engineers placed men in nine of 10 weight classes to capture the eiwa championship at philadelphia's penn palestra last weekend ffiike ea_y-*_y-w_o was named the outstanding wrestler in the tournament and joe peritore let the victory by successfully - defending titles which they won last year the engineers also had [ three other finalists in glenn amshaugh jon rushatz and ron j rl__",~who had to settle for second-place finishes / also adding key points to the engineer 85 point total were elliott \ tepper joe caprio and frank paquin all of whom finished third v and marc kishel who picked up a fourth the only lehigh wrestler wjiofatled to place was bob hartenstine who lost a tough overtime decision in the quarterfinals following the engineers in the battle tor the team title were navy with 79 points penn state with 71 syracuse 43 army 32 cornell 29 and harvard 23 the tournament which was billed as a three-team battle became a two-team fight when three penn state wrestlers were eliminated in the quarterfinals and consolations navy which also lost three men ln the consolations was close behind the engineers because of the hi i'h total of 11 points they gained through falls going into saturday night's bouts for first and third places lehigh led 73-70 with 63 for penn state after the third-place bouts the score was 79-73-6r and the engineers needed only two winners in the finals to clinch a tie caruso and peritore took care of that and when navy's pete vanderlofske failed to pin the engineers clinched the win caruso pinned mike kunnoii of penn in the preliminaries then beat bruce kanze of columbia and penn state's wally clark to reach the finals middle gary burger was caruso's opponent in the finals and for the second year in a row the result was the same caruso picked up two takedowns an escape and two points for riding time to shut out burger 7-0 frosh cabinet urged to okay rhc proposal by dee mcallister characterizing freshman social life during the first semester as bad and citing the new resi dence halls council proposal concerning contacting as an opening step to improving freshman life lee stewart president of the class of 7o urged the freshman cabinet thursday to approve the rhc proposal rhc proposed a resolution at its last meeting to effectively end the no contact rule that presently blocks communications between freshmen and up perclassmen during the fall semester under the proposal freshmen would be allowed in upperclass living groups except for saturday nights and scheduled parties also upperclass liv ing groups could invite each freshman section to one party during the fall semester henry berger president of rhc spoke to the freshman cabinet and also urged them to approve the rhc proposal he also discussed the amend ments concerning freshman representation to rhc which were approved for the by-laws of the rhc constitution berger and stewart said that under the amend ment freshman house presidents regardless of where they have pledged will represent the fresh man class on rhc until the end of spring semester when the freshman class executive committee will select four freshmen members of the gryphon society to represent the new freshman class until new house presidents are elected the main objection to the rhc proposal ending the i no contacting rule appeared to he in the section allowing upperclass men in freshman dorms many members believed that this would allow too much opportunity for dirty rushing other members pointed out that voting for the measure was not so much approving the proposal as favoring the principle of the im provement of freshman life in the end the cabinet approved the rhc proposal in principle in other business frank lucard chairman of the communication committee said that the issue of campus safety improvements was a topic about which nearly all freshmen who returned his com mittee's questionnaires com plained hartwell roper freshman representative to arcadia re ported to the cabinet that smokey robinson and the miracles will perform april 1 for ifc weekend and that tickets will be 3.ooeach he said the lovin spoonful will perform at spring houseparty ( b&w photo by boghosian for those left on campus over the weekend who did not travel to the easterns in philadelphia the warm days offered a great time to catch up on some washing and waxing for both cycles and cars visiting committeemen advise u departments by dan gladding when dr w deming lewis came to lehigh as its new president he brought with him many new ideas one of which was the idea for visiting committees from outside the university to study the various academic departments of lehigh these committees have been meeting for the past year with very interesting results lewis said recently " when i came here several members of the lehigh uni versity board thought visiting committees were a good idea and i came here with the idea that visiting committees were good lewis said looking at the makeup of the committees lewis said the committees are made up of experts from business industry education and government who are qualified to advise the lehigh faculty ln the various departments " the committees meet not less than once a year and not more often than twice a year and make a report in writing not less than once every three years lewis explained he said the committees range in size from three to nine men the committee members who are recommended by the head of the department concerned and approved by lewi . and the board of trustees usually serve for free there ls usually at least one board member on each visiting committee to
