lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa friday march 23 1984 vol 95 — no 41 215 861-4184 sunny session the first day of spring brought ricardo viera asso elate professor of art and architecture outside tuesday afternoon with his graphic communica tions class which conducted student presentations forum committee proposal sets 1 986 for sorority moves by janis barney a major proposal m the new policy pre pared by the sorority housing subcom mittee of forum xiv is to get the sororities on campus by the fall 1986 semester according to committee co chairman ethan felson 87 the old proposal didn't have a defi nite time slot figured out according to panhellenic council panhell president heidi stegmueller 85 in the old prop osal two sororities would definitely be on campus m 1985 but movement of the rest would be contingent upon the filling of the vacancies m saucon married and graduate student housing smags . panhel which is m favor of the new proposal offered comments to the subcommittee as the proposal was being drafted stegmueller said the last proposal was not acceptable to the residence halls council rhc , according to bonnie solt 85 rhc presi dent the rhc did not agree with the option to have a smags unit that was not filled voluntarily to be put into the lot tery solt said we don't want students who didn't choose to live there to be forced to live m smags to facilitate the move the proposal charges the dean of students office to do everything within their power to establish a residential college system m smags by spring 85 felson said if only one or two smags units can be filled by then only one or two sororities may move into the upper centennial complex and the forum will appoint a subcommittee to decide how to resolve the situation felson explained the proposal which must be approved by the campus life committee next tuesday before being placed on the docket for the forum meeting on wed nesday allows for panhel to decide the order m which the sororities will occupy the centennials also it calls for a subcommittee to be formed to advise and assist the dean of students office on the full content of this legislation and the attached supporting recommendations the attached legislation includes sug gestions to keep smags as financially attractive as possible to improve the busing system m time to be incorporated into the 1985-86 university budget and two university professors win presidential award by stuart silberman two university faculty members were among the first to receive the new presi dential young investigator award part of a program to provide support for research conducted by faculty members m the fields of science and engineering according to matthew reilly director of research and development the awards were announced by g.a key worth hi science adviser to presi dent ronald reagan the two faculty members are martin harmer assistant professor of metal lurgy and materials engineering and kyra stephanoff assistant professor of mechanical engineering . awards are an annual grant of 25,000 from the national science foundation nsf to be used m research projects conducted by the faculty at their univer sity in addition to the initial grant the recipients are eligible for additional funds from the nsf up to 37,500 per year to match contributions from indus try dollar-for-dollar he explained the awards were intended for areas where there is particularly strong com petition reilly said we encouraged all of the departments to identify their most promising faculty last june and there were applicants from several departments biology geology mathe rials sciences electrical and computer engineering chemical engineering civil engineering industrial engineering and mechanical engineering in addition to the university only three other pennsylvania schools had faculty who won grants university of pennsylvania perm state university and carnegie-mellon university a total of 200 awards were given nationwide i'm very optimistic for both of the young faculty who received the awards so that the university will obtain the industrial funds needed to bring the grant to the maximum reilly said adding that we are making a concerted and stephanoff harmer received his bachelor's m ceramics and doctorate from leeds uni versity m england during his doctoral • work he spent one year on a scholarship at the university of california at berke ley doing electron microscopy research he has been a faculty member of the university for three years his current research m ceramics includes studying the use of new materials m high technol ogy applications harmer explained that the exploration of new materials involves sintering the common core curriculum stuck truck narrow campus roadways and crowded parking places create an added thrill for tractor trailer drivers maneuver mg around the university for deliveries this truck for example was stuck for • couple hours monday between drown and lamberton halls because a car blocked the rear wheels path recommended by committee by jon ansbacher the freshman year committee appointed by university president peter likins has completed its feasibility study to adopt a required uniform fresh man year and has recommended its con tinuation to the faculty according to alan pense freshman year committee chairman the committee agreed that a uniform freshman year would not be best for the students but the students could benefit from a common core curriculum intro duced m the freshman year and extended over the educational expe rience pense said this committee was appointed by president likins to look at the potential benefits and potential problems with a unified freshman year we were given two extremes — all students take the same courses m the freshman year or all students take very-different courses m the freshman year we wentabove and beyond our charge of duty pense said he added that the committee consisted of faculty from each of the three colleges we decided to look further into the matter and determine that if the extremes were not suitable than what would be worthwhile we realized that a uniform freshman year was not desira ble and that a greater common core pro gram for students would be very desirable pense stated pense noted that the committee felt that there are some general skill areas and cognizance or knowledge areas that could be part of the core curriculum to help the students realize their goals and ambitions we thought every student should have certain skills and cogniz ance
