the creation of a new social code will provide the students with the responsi bility for looking after their own social lives rather than being led around by the hand by the administration tom wheeler 85 interfraternity council ifc vice president said at the full meeting of forum xiv yesterday according to a sample statement of the code desired drawn up by the ad hoc committee of student leaders designed to formulate a new social code the stu dents of lehigh university are commit ted to upholding the highest moral principles and allowing only that behav ior which is considered socially accepta ble . " it goes on to state that " any activity that infringes upon or denies the rights of others will not be tolerated see students page 7 by pete trumbore forum discusses new social code at open meeting lehigh university brown and white vol 95 — no 38 bethlehem pa friday march 2 1984 215 861-4184 at the university the calendar com mittee works through the forum and in conjunction with registrar robert wagner last semester there was an eight-day rcs period elya polak calendar and scheduling official in bucknell's registrar office offered the following information buck nell has 15 weeks of instruction per semester a two-day pacing break is given in october and thanksgiving recess begins at noon on wednesday and continues through sunday christmas vacation runs from dec 18 until the second of february the spring semes ter is broken up with a week's vacation at the end of march their rcs period runs from a satur day through noon on the following mon day finals start that afternoon and see current page 5 a survey comparing academic calend ars at five peer institutions shows sche duling similarities with the university especially in the number of weeks of aca demic instruction the university has 14 weeks of clas ses , according to martha mahoney co chairman of forum xiv the five schools contacted were buck nell university carnegie-mellon uni versity university of delaware duke university and lafayette college all schools were asked how many aca demic weeks they had a semester what vacations they had the length of their finals period if they had anything com parable to the university's reading consultation and study rcs period and how their calendar was decided upon by judy buckley current calendar evaluated compared with five schools new sorority housing proposal raises objections by suzette stoddard objections were raised to a new prop osal drawn up in february which may allow the university's four original sor orities to move on campus by 1985 at tuesday's sorority housing subcommit tee meeting of the campus life commit tee of forum xiv according to stacy abernethy soror ity adviser the new proposal allows for the original four sororities to be moved onto campus by the fall of 1985 but it still doesn't provide any means for mov ing the others over on campus two if delta gamma opts to move to centen nials and one if they do not the new draft of the proposal states that two units in the centennials complex have been designated for sorority occu pation in the fall of 1985 the two sorori ties that will make the move will be alph phi and gamma phi be<ta the remain ing sororities in saucon married and graduate housing smags will move to the centennials if 1 a newly colon ized sorority that withdraws at least forty women from the residence system shall use a smags unit to house their chapter 2 the smags units are desired for occupancy by forty non-affiliated with sorority or fraternity undergrad uate non-freshmen students for use as a residential college and 3 the smags units are desired by forty non-affiliated undergraduate non-freshman either in a cohesive group of forty or in smaller groups that add up to forty for use as apartment style living residence hall council rhc repre sentative ken wilbur 84 said he felt that smags had to be made more attrac tive to undergraduates in order to prompt them to make the move over the mountain he said he feels that a residen tial college will attract undergraduates to smags but said we spent all last year try ing to get students in smags and we only got a colonized sorority over in the old proposal a maximum of one sorority group could move on campus into the centennial complexes beginning in the 1984-85 academic year and then proceed at a rate of one per year pro vided the bed spaces have been approp riately re-allocated jeff brotman 85 campus life com mittee co-chairman explained that with the last year's proposal the earliest that all six sororities would be on campus would be 1989 moving one a year is a game we have to find a way to deal with this where we can get it done with stability the new draft also states that gradu ate students and married students would be allowed to move into the smags units vacated by the sororities this is in the expectation that the size of the graduate school would double as tentatively pro posed in the university's planning docu ment but according to brotman we can't hope to deal with that issue this semester there is a lot more to it the doubling of the size of the graduate school is tentative brotman added that any legislation passed will make a firm commitment to look into graduate hous ing at a later date residence halls council president bonnie solt 84 questioned the necessity of a new proposal it seems to me that if see sorority page 7 mama's boy organize
