the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania 215 861-4181 vol 96 — no 36 friday march 1 1985 woltjen defends tuition increase before forum by chris palmeri vice president and treasurer john woltjen and engineering college dean donald bolle defended the 800 tuition increase and the additional 100 laboratory fee for engineering and science students at wednesday's forum xv meeting woltjen blamed the cost of main taining the new library for a large part of the increase he said the library added 190,000 this year and will add nearly 440,000 to next year's budget woltjen compared this year's nine percent tuition increase to previous years and to other colleges which compete with lehigh for students if you consider what's happening relative to a period of time it's not that bad bolle justified the 100 extra which will be charged to engineering and science students by explaining the increasing cost of maintaining and updating computer labs the university has six computer facilities which bolle estimates cost 100,000 a year to maintain bolle said he did not think it was fair to charge students who were not using the computers bolle said half would go toward maintaining the current labs and the rest would contribute to the building of a new one bolle said the 100 fee only meets part of the cost and that he believes the fee will increase m coming years this differential tuition will affect 1,500 engineering students and 100 science students bolle brought up the point that lehigh charged an extra fee years ago and told of a time when tuition was 750 but 800 for engineering students apply that now bolle said and the students would be paying a thousand dollars extra during the forum's courtesy of the floor freshman lisa palazzi com plained about poor bus service tc saucon valley transportation ser vices manager chris christian said thai half-hourly bus scheduling was ir effect on a trial basis and assured the forum that there will be a majoi improvement m one shape or forrr next september in his speech to the forum president peter likins criticized the brown and white for an editorial on s possible split m the arts college which appeared m tuesday's paper likin said he realized it is very difficult tc put together a newspaper but thij editorial troubled me enough i want to mention it to the forum the editorial concerned a progress and priorities report which is being prepared and will make suggestions concerning the universities academic departments however likins pointed out that the report has not come out yet and when it does amy charles with the interfratcrnity judicial committee's ijc bid day hearings completed administrators and two fraternity presidents involved expressed satisfaction with the results i think the houses are fairly happy greek coordinator mike boyd said stressing the sanctions as being educational rather than punitive we wanted a message from the greek community saying these things are not acceptable the fraternities lambda chi alpha sigma phi ep silon sigma alpha mv and beta theta pi were found guilty on charges of violating the social policy when four pledges had to be taken to the hospital as a result of excessive alcohol consumption sammy was placed on disciplinary probation and the others must sponsor awareness programs to discourage alcohol abuse beta president paul sucro said he was satisfied with the ijc's decisions and expected all the fraternities to be found guilty the university couldn't let the issue be brushed aside he said they had to make an example of it before beta's hearing last monday the house agreed on several suggestions for preventing future alcohol abuse which the ijc used to develop the sanctions imposed on beta sucro said we got off pretty light according to sammy president brian okun the house opinion was that they were treated unfairly and unjustly punished okun was particularly upset with mike boyd's comments concerning sammy's case reported m the brown and white boyd was reported as saying that sammy had left their bar unattended and took fewer proactive measures to protect their pledge after excessive drinking he had no right to say that okun said it was a closed hearing he said boyd made the same statements at the closed hearing confirming the b&w account and added that boyd sent a letter of apology to the fraternity president peter likins who commented openly and vehemently at a forum meeting following the in cidents would not address the sanctions levied against the four fraternities i won't bourgin discusses
