interest in sex seems to have declined at lehigh compared to other schools nationwide us indicated by a recent survey conducted by zeno dahinden teaching assistant in the psychol ogy department dahinden's results were com pared to a sex on campus survey of 20 colleges conducted in 1982 by playboy magazine in the allentown morning call the lehigh survey was a class project for stu dents of dahinden's introductory psychology course we had a suspicion we would find an unexpected shift in sexual attitudes which was not indicated by most of the recent studies with which we were familiar he said although there have been many studies on sexual attitudes according to dahinden these results are unique studies in the past 15 years reflect a much more liberal picture he explained based on dahinden's studies there appears to be a trend toward more conservative attitudes toward pre-marital sex casual sex and a swing back to double standards for men and women the interesting part dahinden said is that the change in attitudes is somewhat one-sided males versus females in the beginning of the 19605 with the availability of birth control via the pill it was females who became liberated in sexual activity and in the sexual rights they demanded now it appears females are going back to being conservative certain sexual attitudes are accepted in males that are definitely unacceptable in females said assistant psychology professor diane hyland who teaches a course on the psy chology of women a high overall virginity rate reported at lehigh 38 percent is almost double the rate reported by playboy less than three years ago contrary to this increase is the substantial decrease playboy reported from a similar study conducted in 1969 while male college students remain sexually liberal female students apparently are becoming more traditional he explained one half of col lege girls investigated admit to never having sex in their lives compared to roughly one-third of the males the double standard is further reflected in the fact that only nine percent of all girls object to a spouse with previous sexual expe rience whereas over 23 percent of all males steering committee to policy committee edpol . the subcommittee revealed problems in two areas of uni versity governance including interac tion between the faculty and administration and interaction within the faculty at the meeting it was stated that poor communication led to ineffective policy making and ineffective faculty input also the president and provost have per ceived a need to have a representative group of faculty with which to consult on a regular basis a group that could direct administrative initiatives to appropriate faculty committees for sub stantive review and advise them on uni versity concerns that lie within the administrative sphere according to the proposal for estab lishing a faculty steering committee the purpose of the steering committee is to a enhance communications between the university faculty and administration b improve the coordi nation of faculty committee activities and to c facilitate more effective faculty input into university planning and policy-making the steering committee will consist of the chairmen of edpol the graduate committee the faculty compensation committee financial planning and operations committee a senior member of the personnel
