t he brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol 96 — no 28 tuesday january 29 1985 215 861-4181 likins proposes revisions for 2 vps by rob wengert editor in chief president peter likins proposed an administrative reorganization last week which would significantly alter the roles of two vice presidents in preparation for a campus computer and communica tions network under the proposal's administrative revisions vice president for adminis tration and planning eric ottervik would supervise academic services combining academic and administrative computing as well as libraries and tele phone service and vice president and treasurer john woltjen's proposed responsibilities would expand to include some of ottervik's administrative func tions mostly related to personnel likins stated the proposal's objective as bringing the academic services of the university such as the library and com puting center and subsequent network under one vice president the evolving technology has necessitated adminstra tive changes to support and supervise a computer network he added ottervik's redefined functions would be titled academic services and would include jurisdiction over comput ing and communications services libraries facilities services which maintains academic buildings class rooms and laboratories and institutional studies the university's planning arm the revised computing and communi cations services position would include the computing center administrative systems and telecommunications and would remain the responsibilities of vice provost for computing and information services douglas abbott who now reports to provost arthur humphrey likins said friday that computer net working necessitated combining admi nistrative and academic computing administration as well as telecommuni cations and libraries will be providing considerable computer accessible information of the creation of the vice provost posi tion in march of 1983 likins said we dropped one shoe and held the other and we realized we had some unresolved organization questions likins pointed out that when he was provost in charge of computing services at columbia university he proposed a similar computer networking plan that was not accepted with the proposed computer network and administrative john woltjen eric ottervik cheme prof charged in accidental shooting by alden cushman while 42-year-old sandra webb of schwenksville pa was doing her laundry last april fool's day her next door neighbor chemical engineering professor william luyben accidentally shot her through the nose luyben will face trial on charges of reckless endangerment and simple assualt sometime in mid-february the 51-year-old professor was attempting to rid his 20-acre gentle men's farm of some pesky groundhogs by allegedly shooting them with his high-powered single-shot remington rifle firing hollow point bullets at least one shot fired by luyben ricocheted off some rocks passed through two strands of thick trees separating the neighboring houses and hit webb in her house webb was doing her laundry when the bullet came through the window hit me just above my jawline and came out the bridge of my nose she said since then she has seen neurological surgeons for treatment of reoccuring migraines and will soon see a plastic surgeon sidelined b&w pholo dy george deligannisi not even turbo power cold save this car friday as it found itself in a door-crunching auto accident in front of fritz lab there was no report on injuries architecture profs find flaws in mart addition by martine costello mart library's structural design has elicited a debate among lehigh's art and archi tecture professors and the building's architects it's hard to be enthusiastic about this building art and architecture chairman nick adams said citing a number of characteristics which he feels are flaws in its appearance and construction yet mart's archi tect and director of physical planning tony corallo enthusi astically support its construc tion and claim that the building has become the symbolic gate way to the campus according to adams we tend to react to art personally and that it's important to eval uate a building based on a set of standards these standards include the historical quality of the campus the location of the building as well as whether the building is consistent with other buildings on campus and whether it functions well as a library adams said certain aspects of the building do not lie within these terms the shape of the windows on the south side of the building and the color of the brick do not fit with the sur roundings associate art and architecture professor steven van gorp agreed adding that the glass was too slick that it was arrogant to choose a dif ferent brick color and that the addition should have integrated mart and maginnes further adams referred to the north side of the building as a military bunker with so few windows that it is not a welcome sight van gorp called the north side un friendly,"and said that it appeared hostile yet van gorp said he was more concerned with the mass ing of the structure he added that the space between mart and maginncs undermines the arch under mart and that their attempt to create a central area of the campus was unsuccess ful van gorp said that although the plaza in front of the library entrance isn't finished he said he thinks that it will be rather dismal when completed adams added that once inside the structure it was frustrat ing that the stairs were not immediately visable a func tion of a building is to walk through clearly he said adding that it was strange that the entry way to the steps was hidden van gorp noted that the stairs were too narrow on the second level adams noted that the doors are below the standard size and that the specially-made doors are more expensive he also said the lights which hang from the ceil ing in the stacks are too close to the books he further pointed out some leftover space " under the stairs and in one corner of the second level which was not efficient ' a good architect would avoid leftover space he said on the lower level adams criticized the acoustic tile used on the ceil ing referring to the tile as the polyester of architecture he said that some people like acoustic tile but then again some people like polyester adams said that this build ing will win awards but every building over a certain size wins awards senior jeff deninno president of the art and archi tecture society said that although the new library addi tion makes an attempt to unite the campus it has alienated itself from the surrounding buildings and one aspect of the design had been to provide an identity and a focus to the uni versity campus van
