of the delta tau delta fraternity the issuing of formal bids last friday marked the beginning of the fraternity's return to lehigh according to george burke house corporation president the new delts issued bids to 44 upper class men and prebids to seven freshmen the group included 18 sophomores 18 juniors and eight seniors eight bids have yet to be dis tributed they will be issued to freshmen following the usual rush period we will conduct rush basically the same as the rest of the houses abiding by the laws governing freshman rush initially 250 people showed interest m joining the fraternity according to burke the selection com mittee conducted 170 per sonal interviews m search of 50 qualified people it was very difficult to decide on who to cut he said they were all good candidates mills honor code proposal presented to forum by amy charles discussion on the subject of a university academic honor code has increased because of a prop osal brought before forum xv by robert mills associate dean of the business college in a letter dated sept 25 to educational policy committee edpol chairman howard whitcomb academic enviorn ment committee co-chairmen professor lydia speller and senior sophia kladias mills wrote that an honor code would improve the academic enviornment and be m the long range interests of lehigh to adopt an honor code mills cited honor codes m effect at the university of virgi nia uva and princeton uni versity as examples for the development of such a system at lehigh virginia students expelled the university of virginia has had an honor code since 1842 uva student adviser mary keaton grant said stu dents report others for lying cheating and stealing accused students prepare for their hear ings before an honor committee with the help of student advisers the committee comprises students and faculty members and its decisions are based on intent and the seriousness of the act grant said students found guilty by the committee are immediately expelled grant said nearly 200 to 300 cases are reported each year although not all of them reach the hearing stage there have been 12 hear ings this year and four students have been expelled princeton's dean of students office reported the honor sys tem there is run entirely by stu dents the students m charge of the system were not available for interview many quality institutions have honor codes mills said ' and since lehigh is trying to be a quality school it would be a good idea for us to have one " he added that he thought an honor code would develop a . sense should include home work and computer programs but he said he wouldn't take an honor code that far because of widespread group effort on these assignments mills said he thought an honor code would help students become responsible adults by reinforcing the idea that you should do your own work which he hoped would carry over into graduate school or the business world the forum other responsi ble student groups the faculty and the administration should devise the honor code mills said and outline punish ments for infractions of the code ought to be the job of the disci pline committee mills said he thinks the code would work quite well at lehigh although he added i'm not so naive as to think that there wouldn't be any cheat ing however he said he thought the vast majority of lehigh saturday night m a fight that took place at about 12:30 a.m outside phi gamma delta fiji fraternity according to a cam pus police report filed by officer pedro torres one fiji brother suffered a broken hand according to the report st luke's hospital refused to release information on any of the students treated reportedly the fight broke out on fiji's dance floor and then moved out side the incident involved several fiji brothers a chi psi member and his younger brother a non lehigh student the police report really wasn't very accurate because the campus police got there as it was focusing on the authority of the discipline committee to sanction and the question of the appeal of sanctions i don't know of any checks on its the disci pline committee authority to sanction former dean of students william quay admitted in fact the committee has incredible latitude m assign ing punishements to both individuals and groups at the same time however quay refused to comment on whether this latitude could lead to abuse by an overzealous panel in light of the harsh social restrictions placed on pi lambda phi several weeks ago questions have been raised as to exactly how far the disci pline committee can go m imposing sanctions for individuals punishments can range any where from the assigning of public service work hours to expulsion from the university for living groups it can be anything from a fine to the termi nation of the group termination as opposed to dissolution associate dean of students and case officer robert cohen pointed out is final disso lution of a fraternity doesn't take away any recog nition of the fraternity as an organized agency that operates within the university termination does in light of this fact cohen said he does not con sider the sanctions applied to pi lam the ban ning of alcohol from the house premises and house functions as particularly harsh it isn't a recommendation to terminate the house neither is it a recommendation to dissolve the membership within the different sanctions cohen said there can be different degrees for instance under social probation the restriction of certain activities can be instituted as specified by the hearing panel that was what was done with the pi lam alcohol ban they the panel have free dom to act as they see fit within the framework of alpha chi rho denies rumors of sat fights by mark johnson alpha chi rho crow president john senesi denied rumors concerning two incidents of fighting last saturday night between fraternity members and kutz town university students according to senesi it was just a lit tle yelling match with six guys from kutztown he admitted that there was some pushing and shoving after these guests refused to leave when asked at about 2 a.m they were annoyed that they were asked to leave senesi said according to campus police chief eugene dax officially there was no police report about crow house the dean's office told us about it officer tony casciano who investi gated the incident said there was no fight or anything like that every time we have a party this kind of thing happens it was certainly a lesser altercation senesi said there was
