the brown and white lehigh university bethlehem pennsylvania vol % — no 14 tuesday october 23 1984 215 861-4181 by scott cagan editor-in-chief trustees repeal social regulations the lehigh university board of trustees voted unanimously friday to accept forum xv's proposal to delegate social policy authority to the ad ministration with the ex pectation that the forum will establish rules and standards of governance the forum will hold a special meeting on tuesday oct 30 to vote on the stan dards and rules currently being drafted by a special com mittee if passed a new social policy would become effective that day the administration is going to remain the delegated authority if things backfire explained neil singer one of the two student representatives to the board of trustees but m the meantime the forum is going to regulate the student population the resolution the product of a special summer ad hoc social policy committee was passed by the trustees without amendment with the ex ception of one word change the board replaced the word transfer with the word delegate making the proposal read we ask the board of trustees to delegate authority regarding social policy to the ad ministration they approved the entire new process but they're still a little concerned about the misuse of alcohol on campus particularly during week days singer said the trustees were en couraged by the increased alcohol awareness on campus as evidenced by some of the programs started recently singer said it's important to the trustees that these programs continued to be monitored the develop ment of rules and standards has begun with tomorrow's open forum meeting being the last chance to offer input before the special meeting on tuesday oct 30 all told their will have been four open meetings held designed to draft these rules and stan dards standards are general guidelines or identification of attitudes and rules are more precise guidelines requiring immediate compliance at forum's open meeting on social policy yesterday it was agreed that the following standards should be main tained — parties should be of a reasonable size with respect to the site of the party m order to maintain a stable atmosphere and prevent harm to people and property — parties should be limited to times that will not intefere with students personal and academic well-being — the host is responsible for the safety and behavior of all guests students should inform their non-university guests of the standards of behavior on campus at any social gathering where alcholic beverages are served attractive and equally accessible non-alcholic beverages should also be served — responsible distribution of alcohol is expected of all hosts all beer taps should be supervised to this purpose no alcoholic beverages should be served to visibly intoxicated individuals one proposed standard that drew criticism was that which would encourage the serving of food at events offering alcohol to foster a social atmosphere more comfortable and attractive to all those attending singer and forum co chairman jeff brotman said this standard would not be followed faithfully or con sidered seriously and would therefore weaken the other standards which they felt were reasonable and ac ceptable to students i am personally opposed to any food standard brotman said i think it would be counterproductive dean of students john other schools cracking down on social policies by brian foley and karen wigh although the lehigh univer sity board of trustees voted friday to lift the social regula tions it had imposed m 1981 many college students across the country are seeing their social lives restricted more and more by their school's administration in an informal brown and white survey with five schools with which lehigh competes for its students it was discovered that many are cracking down on social policy some prohibiting alcohol altogether and others banning fraternities social policy is an issue that most colleges m the country are dealing with according to paula frits assistant dean of students at lafayette college colleges everywhere are try ing to promote alcohol aware ness and responsible drinking among students at amherst college m amherst mass fraternities were abolished by the board of trustees affective june of this year according to ann-marie mcgowan chairman of the amherst student the school newspaper a majority of the students opposed the decision of the trustees which was purport edly based on the anti intellectual attitude and divisive effect of the fraterni ties nine students gained national attention by participat ing m a hunger strike to protest the trustees decision students must now obtain party contracts mcgowan explained five copies of the contract must be signed by var ious members of the adminis tration enforced by campus security the party contracts enable students to use school money and property for their parties the primary purpose of the party contracts is to make those organizing parties aware of their responsibilities it is expected that the organizers will enforce the state's drinking age of 20 and be liable for the safety of the party-goers she said at bucknell university m lewisburg pa social policy includes both regulations and guidelines according toßrenda gordon director of residential life bucknell also recognize retiring mohler harold mohler who will retire next year following 12 years as chairman of the lehigh university board of trustees was honored friday by the asa packer society at its annual dinner held m stabler arena mohler a 1948 lehigh graduate and retired board chairman of hershey foods inc was recognized for his composite contributions to his country his native state of pennsylvania to his industry to education to myriad inter ests m both public and private sectors and to lehigh university during the program mohler received the university's founder's award pres ented m recognition of his outstanding leadership and didication to his alma mater the society is named for asa packer who founded lehigh m 1865 journ division promoted to department by pete trumbore the board of trustees voted friday to elevate the division of journalism to departmental status according to pro vost arthur humphrey the change of status will become effective july 1 1985 currently , journalism is a self-run div ision within the department of english journalism division head robert sul livan said the raising of the division to a department will make the program more attractive to prospective stu dents this decision shows people that the university thinks highly enough ol the program to afford it departmental status the decision was the result of recom mendations made by the
