have ral lied behind the defense of pi lambda phi who was hit last week with a discipline commit tee sanction that bans alcohol from the fraternity's premises for one academic year the fra ternity is expected to file an appeal today pi lam was found guilty of taking lambda chi's racing bed vomiting in lambda chi's bar urinating on tau epsilon phi's party floor and breaking their toaster ana participating in a campus crawl during greek week which violated last spring's statement of univer sity policy the fraternity faces both social and disciplinary proba tion with a specific stipulation forbidding the serving of alco hol at any pi lam function or from any fraternity member possessing alcohol in the house we feel the sanctions imposed on pi lam were a bit james mcintosh — pi lam sanction is a little unfair considering past cases and their rulings...espe cially sexual ones according to alpha tau omega president jim suerman in accordance with the opinions of other stu dents and faculty who thought the discipline committee made an example of pi lam theta chi president and ifc judiciary committee chair man scott sendel said the case was originally going to be heard by the ifc disciplinary committee but the university changed it to the other discipli nary committee because it has the power to subpoena witnesses according to tau epsilon phi president michael saldi their brothers had to be subpoenaed in order to get them to testify minority enrollment declining by amy charles the total number of minority students at lehigh is decreasing according to admissions counselor louis jones but admissions director samuel missimer reported an increase this year in number of freshman minority students jones said minority enrollment has actually dropped a few percentage points since 1979 why the drop in minority enrollment jones offered several reasons first he said there is a limited pool of excep tional minority students coming out of high school black students may not have quite the basic high school education they need jones continued the exceptional students who are accepted at lehigh are also often accepted at ivy league schools especially since this year ivy league schools were not as stringent in terms of entrance requirements for minority students problems in minority balance are not limited to the student body jones said there is a lack of black faculty and professional staff a lot of minority students are looking for programs like the challenge for success program initiated by new associate dean of students vicky sanders who was admissions counselor last year he said black students want black faculty and black staff to use as models to talk to and to get career guidance from on the positive side the minority drop out rate has been decreasing the university has been getting a little bit better at getting minority stu dents the assistance they need jones said this year's freshman class of 1,132 includes 99 minority students or nearly nine percent of the class other universities minority enrollments differ considerably twenty-one percent of the university of pen nsylvania's freshman class consists of minority students according to minority admissions director cheryl lynn edwards this is a record for penn there are 143 more minority freshmen than minority sophomores brown university's freshman class numbers nearly 18 percent minority students director of admissions eugene mahr said brown has an active minority recruitment staff their fresh man minority percentage is up one or two points from last year colgate university has a freshman class that is 12 percent minority students a number slightly down from last year however according to uni versity officials this is only a fluctuation in a generally upward trend at mit 10 percent of the freshman class is minority students assistant director of admis sions nelson armstrong said this is an increase over last year's freshman class bucknell university has 35 black hispanic and mexican-american students in its freshman class or nearly four percent minority adviser judy jackson said minority enrollment was about the same as last year four percent of the freshmen are minority stu dents at duke university also according to admissions officer nancy austin nearly 55 of these students are black 30 are hispanic and 30 are asian lafayette college with an enrollment slightly under lehigh's has 12 minority freshmen all of whom are black director of admissions andy mcneal said that this figure is down from last year i think admissions would like to see a larger number of minority students at lehigh sand ers said missimer added that he would like fair representation of minorities without quotas b&w criticizes panel decision page 8 stiff for their
