the dean of students for fraternity and sorority affairs it's like starting over again phi lippi said referring to the new pro gram du will institute to try and upgrade their image on campus we're going to try and show these guys how to run a successful chapter according to philippi approxi mately half of the du brothers have voluntarily disassociated them selves from the house and moved off campus primarily for academic rea sons dan gobetz 85 du president said that the brothers moved out because of academic and disciplinary see image page 5 problems they decided it would be best forthehouseif theyleft he said next year's residents of du will include nine of 10 present brothers 17 pledges from fall rush and several more members who are the target of a special post-rush program to be organized by du the delta upsilon national and the university philippi said according to gobetz post-rush has already begun with one person already pledging basically we're going to try and advertise du as a fraternity where guys can go who are interested in starting a house with a new image philippi said the job of cleaning up du's reputation will no doubt be a long difficult one gobetz said this past semester we didn't have a single police report on us that says some thing about cleaning up our act he said it's going to be a hard job but record number of add/drops brought to registrar's office office had to close on tuesday jan 17 for about an hour to make a tape of the changes but that was it wagner said he expected a few people blocked classes and arranged hours dur ing pre-registration with the intention of dropping early courses and adding later ones this semester one student came in to add an eight o'clock class on one form and drop that same class on another form we only pro cessed the first one and i don't know if he ever came back he said the effort we have to expend in han dling 3,000 drops and adds means that we have to pay less attention to transcripts certificates and transfer credit wagner added wagner noted that you've got to keep staffing in mind if you increase a course from 30 to 60 students in the first week of school you can't ask a department chairman to pull an instructor out of the wall that's what pre-registration determines by jonathan ansbacher the number of add/drops completed by the office of registrar this semester was higher than ever before according to registrar james wagner a total of 3,036 add/drops were com pleted that's an all-time high 7l per cent of the student body of the spring enrollment wagner noted there were a few more drops than adds " wagner said the drops were due to failures fs conflicts or changes in curriculum he added wagner noted that the add/drop lines were not as long this semester i think the lines were pretty good compared to the lines we have had here recently in september everyone came here early the registration's new handing-out sys tem helped the situation a way to avoid lines is to not let them back up in the first place and this semester we were able to contol and eliminate the back-ups wagner added that the registrar's lehigh university brown ana white vol 95 — no necessary skill enhance ment its intent is really to improve the effectiveness of those of us who have administrative responsibilities john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences said if done in the spirit it represents it will facilitate criticism like a teaching evaluation he explained that the new review is in the context of a good tradition of a strong review structure at the university hunt also said that the review will allow the executive officers to determine perfor mance problems early according to some executive officers the major problem with the review sys tem could be the actual implementation of it ' the problem will be perfecting the mechanics it is a little vague now humphrey said bolle added that if there are problems with it they will be with how it is handled not with the prin ciple of the plan an initial schedule for the first three years of the review system has been set up humphrey reacted positively to the new review process i think it will be great it is long overdue he said humphrey also explained that the execu tive officer review will provide some excellent feedback that did not exist at the executive officer level the system that has been used with the faculty has now been extended to the deans and the vice presidents he added dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences donald bolle com mented on the reciprocal nature of the new review system he explained that the executive officers evaluate faculty members for promotions and salary increases and should also be evaluated by the faculty members who report to them bolle said that the review will give him and other executive officers an hon est view of how their effectiveness is per ceived by those they work with he added by michael melley a performance review system consist ing of an annual and triennial review for the executive officers of the university the deans the vice presi dents and the president will begin this year at the university the review sys tem was established by university pres ident peter likins in a memorandum to the faculty and staff dated nov 4 1983 likins explained that a formal review system exists for all members of the university community except for the executive officers he added that performance evaluation for the executive officers occurs on an infor mal basis however the introduction of a little bit of structure into the review process will make it more constructive simply by making it more routine every spring each executive officer below the president will submit to the president a brief written report describ ing his or her main accomplishments frustrations and unmet objectives dur by mike coryell the ad-hoc calendar committee of forum xiv proposal to schedule the reading consultation and study rcs period on a weekend next fall has been criticized by some of the university faculty i do not think professors will show up james saeger associate professor of history explained i might because i work on saturday and sunday but pro fessors would be extremely reluctant to show up at the end of the semester it's one thing to come on weekends for finals but during rcs such a small percent of students come to talk that i'm afraid newly proposed rcs period meets with faculty criticism ing the past year the annual report will also include information about principal short and long term goals during the summer the president will discuss the reports with each executive officer the president will submit his written report to the executive committee of the board of trustees the triennial review will be more extensive since it will include the opin ions of the other members of the univer sity community according to the memorandum the executive officers will at a minimum be reviewed by their peers and by those reporting to them directly there will not be any syste matic effort made to survey any substan tial population according to vice president and pro vost arthur humphrey some of the reviews will be interviews while others will involve written evaluations likins noted in the memorandum that most faculty and staff members will not get involved in the triennial review process people will be reluctant to sit alone in their offices over i weekend he sciid arthur gould professor of industrial engineering and a member of the forum defended the move it was necessary in order to meet a large number of criteria proposed gould said we wanted to start the semester after labor day because students com plained about it affecting summer employment and also we wanted to end finals by the 22nd or 23rd of december no one wanted finals on the 24th of december then we had to take into con sideration things like pacing break and thanksgiving so there is an
