freshman position by kathy goldstein the adoption of a residential college in taylor house and the inclusion of inte grated coed-by-room housing as an upperclass option is the 1984-1985 hous ing configuration preferred by forum xiv according to a vote taken at tues day's full forum meeting the forum passed a recommendation consisting of two alternatives for the con figuration both include the establish ment of a residential college in taylor but only the first includes the integrated housing option the recommendations will now go to university president peter likins and the board of trustees visiting committee for residence life donald ryan professor of geology and forum trustee representative asked that the straw vote be taken so that he would be able to tell the board of trustees which alternative the forum preferred the recommendations for the housing configuration were brought to the forum by its residence life and special hous ing joint subcommittee in cooperation with the university's residence life staff the first proposed plan plan a includes establishing williams house as a coed-by-room housing option williams was chosen because it is all upper classmen there are two bathrooms on each hall and an area coordinator and residence adviser are in residence and can help ensure that the setting will be conducive to co-educational living according to jeff brotman 85 campus life committee co-chairman integrated housing in two sections of taylor is proposed for the same reasons along with the feeling that the family type atmosphere of the college would lend itself to co-ed-by-room living brot man said the college will be set up with approximately 50 freshman spaces and relatively equal class representation among the remaining 110 spaces if the proposal is approved he explained plan b is essentially the same as plan a except that integrated housing is not an option he added both plans include provisions for a sor ority moving into congdon house in the centennial i complex emery house will also house a sorority if a second sorority is able to move from the saucon married and graduate students units also at tuesday's meeting recom mendations to the admissions office brought forth by the admissions sub committee were endorsed by the full forum the recommendations include investigating the feasibility of using faculty recent alumni and current stu dents in recruiting efforts and recruiting outside the current student market the investigation of establishing a fund for university-sponsored loans to enrolled students is also recommended this is the use of the university's tax exempt status to issue bonds to use for raising funds to put into loans david leahigh assistant professor of finance and admissions subcommittee co chairman explained the state of pennsylvania is about to start a program like this he added a feasibility study of a system of pre-paid tuitions was also proposed this would help parents by allowing tax deductions on tuition pay ments leahigh explained university officials have been receptive to both these ideas leahigh added in other subcommittee business the forum approved the adoption of a logo for use on all forum papers the logo was designed by michael richman 85 according to brian enslow 84 adminis tration committee co-chairman campus police thwart burglary at delta sig sat by judy boettger an attempted burglary at delta sigma phi fraternity was halted by campus police on saturday according to police lt charles fosburg timothy caplin a resident of hellertown was position she said explaining that it is the only opportunity that freshmen have to put a voice into the sac sac elections are held in march before the current freshman class is here so all offices are held by sophomores juniors and seniors aaron disagreed with the idea that having both freshman class officers and sac freshman representatives elected four houses get computers benefits deemed enormous by janis barney the student activities council sac has amended the freshman represen tative position out of existence accord ing to eric altman/84 sac president since the dean of students office decided to have elections for freshman class officers in the early part of the fall semester the sac felt that a conflict of representation was created none of the other classes are represented on the sac and we did not feel that the freshman class deserved special treatment alt man explained altman reported that the amend ment passed with the necessary three quarters vote of the sac the freshman rep position gave a member of the fresh by tony coppola the acquisition of computer terminals by fraternity houses has become a defi nite trend according to steve smith manager of fraternity services the houses are acquiring terminals for good reasons according to smith with the large number of engineers involved in the fraternity system and the enor mous benefits that an in-house terminal can provide terminals were a logical progression he said he added the fra ternities that have terminals or are close to getting them include alpha epsilon pi kappa alpha sigma phi epsilon and chi phi chi phi has two terminals according to dave porter 84 a house brother one model is approximately three years old whereas the other terminal is newer and four times as fast as the older termi nal he said according to porter the new model is a televideo 925 with a television screen he said that the house funded the termi nals through alumni donations and money from chi phi national he added that it took a lot of time and effort to draw up the proposal and present it however the benefits from being able to do com puter assignments at the house and help the pledges on the spot made the effort well worth it tom cahill 85 of sigma phi epsilon said that his house is acquiring terminals over christmas break for similar rea sons it's just a hassle to have to walk all the way down to wait on line for a terminal the terminals would make things a lot easier for people in the house who need to use the computers for their courses cahill said adding that fund ing for the terminals came from alumni kappa alpha also hopes to get a termi nal by next semester according to house member chris borglum 84 he said that one brother has his own terminal but it is not connected to the university
