interviews with several forum xiv members both students and faculty show mixed reactions to reduction in forum membership effected at the start of the semester attendance at forum meetings has improved from last year martha mah oney 84 co-chairperson of forum said concerning the organization's decision last semester to reduce its size from 60 students and 60 faculty members to 30 representatives from each group although we haven't noticed any other major differences the number of people is easier to work with she said the reduction in size has helped eve ryone to know each other better and con schools governing boards approve colonial league sequently feel more comfortable talking about issues she added steve link 85 student representa tive said he has not seen any difference in students actual participation how ever as a whole the group is controllable and organized the representatives take their jobs more seriously now he added david amidon director of urban stu dies was not as optimistic the differ ence in size has not made much difference the percentage of people participating might be a little more but not much he said now the forum is alive and the smaller size is responsible donald by alden cushman with recent approval by the governing board of bucknell university and the previous approvals from colgate uni versity holy cross college lafayette college the college of william and mary and the university the new colonial football league has formally been approved the temporary committee will meet for the second time next week to continue working on implementation of league policies and objectives the policies will be compatible with but not exactly the same as those of the ivy league major topics to be discussed and resolved include scholarships recruit ment play-off schedule tv contracts league funding and freshman participation john whitehead head football coach and william leckonby athletic direc tor have expressed enthusiasm students and more especially the alumni representatives about what's going on in the house smith said , adding that one of the main reasons there was antagonism between the houses and the auxiliary services was that the new system was pushed on them they didn't know how to react smith said that so far this year things have run well although there have been a few miscommunications regarding var ious house projects the biggest prob lem smith said is the time lag it takes time to get the job done there's red tape that has to be gone through and this is frustrating to the students who want the job done immediately in regard to regulations smith said that the fraternity members are not per reactions mixed about forum-size reduction by teresa kilcullen the fraternity maintenance system — taken over by the university last year is working much better this year primarily because the undergraduates are better informed and understand how to use the system according to richard metz director of auxiliary services in addition the establishment of the new position of fraternity services man ager presently occupied by steve smith has aided in the improvement in the sys tem metz said halfway through last year we received a recommendation from the interfraternity council ifc to improve communication between stu dents and alumni on house maintenance by establishing a mechanism for input he stated that as a result of this recom mendation it was determined that we didn't have anyone to devote enough time to the system we have a large physical asset on the hill in terms of those buildings we needed someone who if there ever was too much to take on brian enslow 84 student representa tive agreed with the possibility of a lack of manpower however this has been solved through non-forum members serving on subcommittees other inter ested people can get involved that way he said the reduction has definitely been beneficial to the efficiency of forum especially in terms of communication the reduction has helped slightly john wood professor of metallurgy said the people on forum are now working whereas they didn't always in the past everyone who is there wants to be there he said ryan professor of geology said the committee meetings are more lively with a lot of interaction on the other hand arthur gould pro fessor of industrial engineering said it is too early to tell whether or not the size reduction has helped by mid-winter we will have a better idea because there are projects in process that won't be accomplished until then he said the new size requires more individ ual input and immediate action repre sentatives can't procrastinate with ideas any more tom wheeler 85 student representative said the size is ade quate for now he said but warned that there might be problems with manpower league play officially begins in 1986 next year four of the total five league teams will be included in the engineer's football schedule the addition of holy cross to the 1986 schedule will mark the official beginning of league play the purpose of the new league is to bring together a group of institutions of higher learning that share comparable academic admission standards and his torically long commitments to intercol legiate athletics the presidents and governing boards of the colonial league schools are committed to four guiding principles student athletes in football will be representative of the total student body in each institution in general academic achievement and overall educational experience — standards of admission and criteria for financial
