university treasurer john woltjen said that he thought it was extremely advantageous to be at the university in terms of tuition costs as compared with other schools of comparative academic standards the university however is not immune to rising costs every year the university's tuition costs increase and next year this trend is expected to con tinue woltjen said a major factor is inflation woltjen said adding we have no control over that woltjen further explained that the cost of living increases every year affecting university costs accordingly the consumer price index rises utili ties medical and other expenses are going up and we have to pay for these cost factors he said see tuition page 4 faculty members did not accept the decision of the fcc to go along with the personnel office because they believed that the information was sparse and insufficient in certain areas according to laura olson adjunct professor of international relations at a faculty meeting on sept 12 the assembled faculty members voted by a margin of 68-62 in favor of a motion by olson that asked the administration to postpone implementation of the new policy until such time as the fcc could hold an open hearing on the subject for all faculty and staff according to thomas and a memo randum from university president peter likins olson emphasized that the faculty's decision was not an anti-fcc movement the faculty was simply making a plea for the sufficient information to support their decision olson said the decision of the faculty not to go along with the proposed reduction plan was not really too much of a surprise to the fcc according to thomas tho mas said he understood the faculty's skepticism since it was difficult to con vince the faculty due to the insufficiency and complex nature of much of the infor mation supplied by the university per sonnel office he said that this was the first time in lehigh history that the faculty has gone against the decision of the fcc thomas added that whether or not this incident would cause any addi tional problems in the future for the faculty and the fcc was too early to tell oktoberfest held in grace because of gloomy weather a new adjustment in blue cross/blue shield coverage for all university employees has led to several problems and differences of opinion among faculty members according to david thomas professor of metallurgy and materials engineering the university personnel office approached the faculty compensation committee fcc over the summer with the proposed plan in an attempt to lower the cost of rising health insu rance according to thomas he said that the fcc questioned the information presented to them by the personnel office and therefore did not initially comply with its decision he added that the fcc requested another presentation from the by anthony coppola personnel office and until then the per sonnel office was to gather sufficient information from the health insurance companies and other sources to support its argument for cutting the benefits to the faculty and staff on the second gathering of the fcc and the university personnel office the information was still shaky and quite lacking in certain areas according to thomas however this time the fcc accepted the decision of the personnel office to cut faculty benefits from blue cross/blue shield coverage because the fcc realized the importance of control ling the cost of sky-rocketing health insu rance rates thomas said he added that the fcc was only acting in the best interest of the faculty in-festive b&w photo by
