unex cused absences per student for all students is 1.98 the average for students not on the dean's list is 1.88 and the average for students on the dean's list is 3.18 dean congdon stated that although the figure for the students on the dean's list is considerably higher than the average for the whole student body this is due partially to the fact that such students do not take any excused absences a total of 152 cut notices have been sent out of these 18 have been cancelled for various causes thus a net of 134 cut notices have been sent the number of students who have no unexcused cuts the university's growth from the founding down to the present the high spots in the life of the school as treated in the play include the founding the richard harding davis era the crash of 1893 the war years and the present facts based on tradition the events of the comedy are based on tradition and history al though according to weiss cer tain liberties have been taken with fact for dramatic reasons and with malice aforethought hughes experience as a com poser includes the writing of the complete score of knight in ar mor the 1938 musical comedy and the greater part of the score of boy in babeland the 1937 musical comedy the titles of a few of the tunes for the new show are i'm going to start a college get along old lafayette lady go way only whiskey beer and rum it's a lehigh show musical comedy drawn from the history of lehigh university is to be produced this spring by mustard and cheese dramatic society it was announced yesterday by albert a rights di rector of dramatics the book for the show was writ ten by eric weiss graduate stu dent and the score composed by david c hughes 39 the show on which the authors have been working for two years is in the form of a revue consisting of five acts depicting in a comic vein the stages of the university's growth from the founding down to the present the high spots in the life of the school as treated in the play include the founding the richard harding davis era the crash of 1893 the war years and the present facts based on tradition the events of the comedy are based on tradition and history al though according to weiss cer tain liberties have been taken with fact for dramatic reasons and with malice aforethought hughes experience as a com poser includes the writing of the complete score of knight in ar mor the 1938 musical comedy and the greater part of the score of boy in babeland the 1937 musical comedy the titles of a few of the tunes for the new show are i'm going to start a college get along old lafayette lady go way only whiskey beer and rum it's a lehigh show i've told my heart and she was a good girl buchanan originates idea in discussing the origin of the show rights said that the first idea for a musical comedy based on the history of the university came from andrew buchanan alumnus trustee several years ago but that since then several student writers had worked on the scheme although in its present form the show bears only slight resemblance to these early ideas the original title for the comedy chosen by the authors was and the wind blew while the most recent tentative title is the le high revue only one woman is to be includ ed in the cast and no chorus is to be used the total cast will consist of about 24 persons the show is so arranged weiss said that a relatively small cast of competent actors will be able to handle the whole thing although there are a large num ber of characters each actor will be able to take a different part in separate acts combine on dance combine on dance a five-week radio series over wcba allentown radio station will be inaugurated tomorrow ev ening at 9 o'clock when the le high debaters will uphold the affirmative against muhlenberg announced j calvin callaghan director of debating the topic will be resolved that the united states should pur sue a policy of strict economic and military isolation toward all na tions outside the western hemi sphere engaged in international or civil conflict stephen kowaly shyn jr e e 41 and charles f meyer bus 42 will debate for lehigh albert e ponter jr bus 40 will be the announcer for the five-week series on nov 22 lehigh will take the affirmative against the university of scranton the topic will be re solved that president roosevelt should be re-elected in 1940 the debaters will be robert w leav ens bus 41 and charles f mey er the moravian college for men will be the next opponents on nov 29 with lehigh again taking the affirmative the subject is resol ved that the united states should enter the european war on the side of the allies if and when it becomes evident that the allies are to be defeated frank l benedict jr bus 40 and donald r schoen arts 41 will take part in this de bate on dec 6 bucknell university will be the opponent the topic is pending resolved that the basic blame for the present european war rests upon the allied powers will be the subject against albright college who will uphold the affirmative bernard a smith bus 40 and russell kowalyshyn arts 40 will take the negative for lehigh a split team debate with cedar crest college will be held on nov 27 as yet no topic has been decid ed a debate with the university of pennsylyania on a national hook up over the mutual network is also pending chess club elects chess club elects the electrical engineering soci ety will hold a meeting at 7:15 p m thursday in room 415 packard laboratory at which time three students will speak on summer em ployment for engineers and eta kappa nu honorary electrical engineering society will pledge eight new men the men who will talk on their summer experience are roy h frederickson e e 40 who work ed for the public service electric and gas company willard m shelly e e 40 who was with the aldrich pump company and t brooks woods e e 41 who was associated with the consolidated edison company the program's aim is to give stu dents the opportunity of realizing the benefits of summer employ ment which is required of engin eering students eta kappa nu will tap its new members at this meeting and j lynford beaver professor of elec trical engineering and faculty ad viser of the society will give a short talk on its history and aims the men to be pledged are rob ert j seugling 40 alton p dief fenbach 41 albert c foss 41 louis g gitzendaner 41 freder ick h housel 41 stephen kowa lyshyn 40 carl c stotz 41 and walter h vogelsburg 41 gordon gets promotion approximately 150 freshmen and sophomores reported to capt benjamin s mesick assistant professor of military science and tactics yesterday after drill as candidates for the new military so ciety that is to be formed this organization will be similar to the pershing rifles of other schools and is being sponsored by scabbard and blade honorary mil itary society thirty-two men will be selected to form a platoon that will be de veloped into a drill team wearing a distinctive uniform membership in the society will aid the men applying for advanced work and it will also be in their favor in becoming members of scabbard and blade this society may be used as a guard of honor on special occa sions and it will probably put on a drill at the military ball accord ing to captain mesick thomas talks to p t a plans are nearing completion for the annual union triad dance of sigma phi delta phi and kappa alpha fraternities to be held dec 9 in the hotel bethlehem the union triad is composed of the three original national frater nities founded at union college within a few months of each other about 1825 the members of the committee in charge of the dance are donald g dennison jr i e 40 sigma phi william l archer bus 41 kappa alpha and arthur m over arts 42 delta phi these men have been compiling invitation lists and expect to have them in the mail within a few days ap proximately 200 invitations will be sent out music will be furnished by art wendell
