sac elections reopened vote delayed a week she said she would be offended if my position was open even though i was the only one interested in my position lewis immediately responded by pointing out that with seven uncontested positions it was impossible to run a fair election kuvin answered that plenty of people were interested but not in all the positions assistant dean of students roger wat kins entered the discussion questioning the student body representation that would result from an election that was not reopened he asked board members if they believed that the problem was one of more candi dates to run there are presently seven positions in which candidates are run ning uncontested he said adding five or six are all from the same fraternity lewis said he thought the sac was have our lease renewed for the next five years . . . i don't think they're the administration trying to get us out at all she said wendy kress 83 president of gamma phi beta and michelle tornsho 83 pres ident of delta gamma both said they had only heard rumors of pressure being exerted by the administration but neither saw any evidence to support the rumors phillipi noted they're raising eve ryone's rent they the three sororities at smags can stay there as longas they see sororities page 12 by george gabuzda earlier this semester delta gamma the i'niversity's newest sorority solved its controversial housing dilemma by leasing an off-campus apartment house which alleviated the problem of having to house some members in dormitories or some other university building since that time the other three sorori ties alpha gamma delta alpha phi and gamma phi beta along with the admin istration have intensified efforts to find housing on this side of the mountain nearer to campus according to larry phillipi assistant to the dean of students in charge of fraternity and sorority affairs president of alpha gamma delta karen lindquist 83 said she felt the administration was applying subtle university and the man chosen to succeed deming lewis as pres ident of lehigh in july of this year our spring breaks coincided and we made an appointment to speak with him on march 9 at his office at columbia likins earned his b.s degree in civil engineering from stanford university in 1957 his s.m in civil engineering from the massachusetts institute of technol ogy in 1958 and his ph.d in engineering mechanics from stanford in 1965 he has served as assistant dean and later associate dean of engineering at the university of california and as dean of columbia's school of engineering and applied science prior to becoming pro vost there lehigh was a seed planted so there was a sense in my mind of lehigh as a quality school as an engineering school and incidentally as a wrestling school i've been growing up in jersey and my son is very interested in wrestling and i've occasionally said to myself i'd urge johnny out to summer camp at lehigh maybe he'd get interested so you see i've had a predilection for the place latent but real fora longtime i'd never visited the campus until this october i had no prior substantial relationship but i had that feeling now just why after only a year as provost here at columbia i responded with anything but begone to the com mittee i can't quite tell you because in the course of my year here i had expressed no interest in other potential sec futi'rk page 7 likins interesting i suppose i've had a life-long sense of lehigh 1 can't tell you exactly why i confess that part of it is that i was a kid way out on the west coast interested in wrestling and i was aware of lehigh as a wrestling school that's not supposed to be relevant in deciding about a job like this but it docs kind of precondition you secondly my original education was civil engineering and when i graduated from stanford in 57 i applied lor gradu ate schools my faculty at stanford advised me to apply for graduate school at about four places mlt berkeley illinois and lehigh and stanford so i did apply to all of those places i was admitted i suppose i had some financial aid for graduate school at lehigh but when the chips were down finally i went to mit for the master's degree still he currently resides in park ridge n.j with his wife patricia and their six children what follows has been excerpted from our meeting last week b&w what got you interested in apply ing to lehigh like the rest of us likins one doesn't apply fora presid ency one is contacted perhaps nomi nated by a third party i don't exactly know how my name came into the hands of the search committee somebody at kxxon told me than an exxon represen tative had submitted my name to the committee somebody else told me that someone from dupont had submitted my name to the committee you'd have to ask the committee b&w what made you pursue it what made you interested turned away were not properly informed if we keep it closed he warned this election will be a ridicu lous farce sac publicity chairman june kuvin 83 said she believed it was their the candidates duty to find out the informa tion and dates sac treasurer dave dender 83 agreed jon's statement is irrelevant anyone can read the brown and while and see there was time he said kuvin produced the sac ad schedule and told the council the sac had placed ads in the brown and white on two occa sions feb 23 and march 5 stating that petitions available feb 26 would be due on march 8 this was plenty of time she said adding it was a longer time than for class elections kuvin then changed the focus of the discussion bringing up the question of whether or not the uncontested positions were a result of lack of student interest believes there will be no adequate stu dent participation within sac watkins concurred observing that out of 4,100 students we get 20 to run that is representation watkins added he felt candidates may not have been aware of where to go for petitions and whether there were enough available even though there was a small shortage for a short time kuvin said she believed there was an adequate supply and that they were made readily available publicity or apathy watkins con cluded sac is still responsible he said he believes that in order to make the council stronger it will need the support of the student population lewis concluded the discussion calling the seven uncontested positions an embarrassment to the sac he said no open vote will show us as very close minded
