alexander,donahue play lafayette rally decided hold up work on grace hall fall houseparty week-end passed with only a few unpleas ant ripples to disturb a gener ally well-conducted round of festivities the senior ball at tendance spoke well for its pop ularity and the saturday night dancers whom i observed were still bearing up with fortitude under the strain of a strenuous round of events the saturday afternoon successes in soccer and football surely contributed to keeping up any lagging spir its to all students who gave the administration their sincere co operation i wish to extend my thanks the university also wishes to express publicly its sincere appreciation to the six ty-two couples who so gener ously and graciously gave their services as chaperons wray h congdon dean of undergraduates went out , mr leach pondered the question of entertainment partly in order to pass the lonely hours and partly to satisfy his artistic soul our librarian chose a copy of the bible a volume of shakespere reade's cloister and the hearth mellock's john halifax gentle man we never heard of that one either galsworthy's forsyte saga dickens old curiosity shop a a milne's when we were very young and a volume of stevenson's essays he stated that it was exceedingly difficult for one who as a librarian is acquainted with so much good literature to choose only ten books and said he would probably pick ten different volumes if asked the same question tomorrow when asked why he chose no modern novels mr leach gave it as his opinion that there have been none produced in the last quarter of a century which are even worth considering he made no mention of log tables or esquire have any of you book-loving engineers ever considered the ten books-on-a-desert-island prob lem which volumes would you choose if you were marooned with nothing else to do but live and read these two horrible questions were posed to howard s leach university librarian in a recent interview after some thought he said that he couldn't imagine him self in such a near-bookless state very well having been so closely asociated with books for so long but that he would have a stab at it anyway after lighting a cigarette with two sticks matches the first one mr leach who by the way should theoretically be an author ity on this matter of the value of books gave his first choice as de foe's robinson crusoe because of the suggestions for getting along on a desert island he picked a boy scout handbook for the same rea increase meetings to twice monthly reading times editor to talk sales of review muhlenberg game was included in the plans made by ar cadia student governing body last night in drown hall announced fred e galbraith jr arts 40 it was also decided to hold the traditional rally and smoker on the eve of the lafayette game and to have exhibits similar to those of last year a parade across the new street bridge concludes the rally the time-honored serenade of fem-sem will be omitted as the girls will be on vacation arcadia's budget for the coming year is to be submitted to dean congdon for approval it was sta ted in a report that more than 200 was made on the sale of freshman hats this money was turned over to the freshman employment fund and is to be handled by e robins morgan director of the placement bureau for aid to freshman stu dents turned over to frosh fund approval was given to the flood lighting of packard laboratory and the alumni memorial building and it was voted to flood-light these and possibly several more buildings next year the final approval was given to the new cheerleading plan for next year the cheerleaders under this plan will consist of two seniors two juniors four sophomores and a freshman squad eligible for num erals • dftfci plans for sports building incomplete ; survey now being made grace hall will not be completed as planned for the opening of school next year but should be ready by january or february of 1941 it was learned today from in terviews with president c c will iams and andrew w litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds plans and contracts for new 300,000 sports building do nated by eugene g grace 99 president of the board of trustees will not be completed for at least another two months because of the building's unique character a careful survey of au ditoriums and gymnasiums of both the east and the middle west is being made by james l burley architect for the new building the reason for this extensive survey is to assure the school that grace hall when completed will meet all requirements the structure is to be three stor ies high it will contain room for intra-mural sports with the first floor devoted exclusively to squash courts ana boxing the second floor to basketball and wrestling and the top floor used partly as a dance floor and partly as space for r o t c drills plans for a sports theater are also being made and if they have are successful an audi torium large enough to seat the whole university will be made possible ford speaks at princeton lehigh together with 30 colleges in the middle atlantic states this week is conducting a poll of stu dent opinion dealing with topics of national and international import ance each student today will re ceive a copy of the poll which is sponsored by the intercollegiate newspaper association instructions for handling the poll are as follows each student should indicate a single choice of several alternatives under each question when the sheet has been filled out it should be given to the alexander played to suit the tastes of both the ever jitting jitterbugs and the more quiet sophisticates the sweet-swing cult spent most of the evening in the main dining room where al donahue played music for smooth dancing al though much of the time he also used a very fast tempo to make the evening more enjoyable al played some of lehigh's school songs in a manner such as they have probably never before been played with all the studinks and their dates joining in the sing ing phyllis kenny sings by midnight the two dance floors were so crowded that it be came almost impossible to do any type of jitterbugging thereby making the remainder of the ev ening really delightful for the pro ponents of sweet dancing phyllis kenny provided the feminine touch to alexander's band while peggy nolan did the vocal honors for donahue after the football game with buffalo university many couples attended the traditional tea dance at the maennerchor pretzels beer and songs added the extra atmos dinner at the suburban golf and country club near trenton on the 16th or 17th of november the southern new england le high club will give a dinner nov 17 in bridgeport walter okeson treasurer of lehigh university will be the guest of honor a pep dinner will be given nov 4 by the young lehigh graduates of atlantic city who are organizing an alumni club of south jersey the first meeting is to national de fense problems at a meeting of the nativity young peoples society on sunday evening the speaker stressed the import ance of maintaining a large navy in order to keep this hemisphere clear of aggressor nations he also pointed out that strong defenses should be kept at the hawaiian is lands aleutian islands and the panama canal emphasizing the necessity of keeping the latter ex ceptionally well fortified so that our navy can sail from one ocean to another without going around south america president c c williams has been selected a member of the na tional non-partisan committee for peace through revision of the neutrality law by william allen white nationally known newspa perman and chairman of the com mittee the committee consists of more than 250 americans who think that elimination of the arms embargo and application of the cash and carry plan are the best methods of keeping the united states neutral in the present european war all of which was written by
