215 861-4184 fourth sorority takes 75 women for new chapter seventy-five women pledged the uni versity's fourth sorority delta gamma in a ceremony conducted friday in the university center the women were selected from an original list of 188 who signed up to go through the rush process " according to larry philippi assistant to the dean of students one hundred and fifty women were interviewed and 88 were invited to one of two preference parties held thursday night . philippi said the size of the chap ter was set at 75 members by the pan hellenic society which is the maximum allowed for each sorority he said the rush was conducted by represen tatives from the sorority's national office local alumnae and undergradu ates from the delta iamma chapter at gettysburg college philippi said philippi expected the pledge class would hi initiated before the sorority rush period begins in january he added that the sorority may now try to rent a house near the university the national officers have been out scoping the area and we've been working with them he said philippi said that delta gamma's long term housing plans will probably coin cide with those of the other three sorori ties ihsw p by fami ! seniors and young alumni met in the sculpture garden behind whi taker lab saturday for hoagies and cocktails at the first senior tailgate party of the football season coordinator to aid clubs projects tailin watkins explained that ideas will be generated by us also they are work ing on creating mini-courses like quiche making indian art pottery-making and dance lessons tamasi said she said the proposed mini-courses would run for several weeks with the possibility of a small fee to cover the cost for materials and hiring instructors another project being considered is the renovation of the osborne room in the university center at one time it was used for a movie theater watkins said adding that the room is equipped with a projection booth we're looking into it but right now we don't have the faculty to take off on it he said any students who want to start a club can come to me now tamasi said adding that her office is room 210 in the university center rape suspect may be tried as an adult a 15-year-old suspect held in an aug 18 rape in fountain hill of a 29-year-old university graduate student will be examined in court on monday to determine if he should be tried later as a juvenile or as an adult the alleged assaulter was taken to the northampton county juve nile detention center then moved to a diagnostic center for 28 days of mental and character testing according to inspector wallace frye of the fountain hill police department at the end of this period he will return to the deten tion center until his hearing frye said although minors are usually tried in a juvenile court where penalties may be lessened frye says for certain offenses which we consider hideous such as murder rape etc and if he has a past history and good mental health then we don't think he should be tried as a juvenile the adult certification hearing to determine the suspect's status will take place in northampton county where he resides frye said by michelle lujmon the restrictions placed upon the fra ternity system have prompted students to investigate social and cultural alter natives to the hill according to assistant dean of students roger watkins the university recognizing the need for an individual who can coordinate these programs created the position of student activities coordinator watkins said he added that the coordinator will arrive at the university on jan 1 1982 the coordinator's primary responsi bility is to i>i a repository for different kinds of social alternatives watkins said the coordinator will refer students tf different committees for support help to locate resources and help with the overall planning fora proposed project watkins explained lorraine tamasi a graduate student in the school of education is filling in for the student activities coordinator until someone is hired if a student comes to tamasi or wat kins with an idea for a new club or pro ject we may send the student to the cultural affairs subcommittee or an existing club or organization that may be interested in dealing with the idea wat kins said watkins suggested that ideas be dis cussed with him first and if the technical problems can be worked out the student should present a written proposal of the idea this proposal should be a charter or constitution that states what the func tion's purpose will be what it will do for the university and how many students are interested in it watkins said watkins also suggested that with an adviser an organization will have a lot more stability and a lot less problems an adviser adds continuity to an organi zation and gets students thinking about what will happen to it in the future he added after obtaining an adviser the club should submit a budget proposal to wat kins there are funds available to new clubs but within reason he said donated money could be used by a club to operate run several events or to do fund raising on their own he said a lot of clubs are just sitting on money my job is to propel them into doing some thing tamasi said watkins said that he and tamasi will do some interest studies to see what stu dents would like he added that they will address students interests and needs we hope to match those with faculty interests he said the social and cultural alternatives subcommittee of the forum will also conduct student interviews and distrib ute questionnaires to research student interests and ideas the results of this investigation will be formulated into proposals for alternatives in the future it will be a tandem type of situation the student activities coor dinator and the sponsor organization will work together to publicize their ideas according to watkins vol 93 — no 9 bfcthlkhem i j a tuesday september 29 19h1 lehigh university brown and white inside faculty profiles p 4 patrol works p 5 deadheads p 6 58-0 p 8
