vol 92 - no 43 fire in m&m causes smoke clears building 2 students seriously hurt as jeep rolls by herbert fischer a fire set friday night in a mcclintic marshall house m&m stairwell caused an estimated 1,000 worth of fire and smoke damage to the entire build ing according to pat naylor residence area coordinator the fire which caused the evacuation of nearly 300 students for over one hour was responsible for at least one injury stanley galczynski 84 was treated for smoke inhalation at the university health center and was sent imme diately to st luke's hospital for treat ment of second-degree burns on his left hand his hair was also singed campus police chief eugene dax said he notified the bethlehem fire depart ment at 9:45 p.m he said four pumper trucks and one hook-and-ladder arrived at the scene campus police went door-to-door to make sure all students were out of the building dax said naylor said roommates richard zieger 84 and john anderson 84 of see fire page 5 by tom di piazza two university students are in serious but stable condition and a third has been charged with reckless driving after the jeep they were riding in overturned late friday night david malloy 84 and philip von neida 84 are in the intensive care unit at st lukes hospital malloy is suffering from internal injuries including a rup tured trachea and von neida has a frac tured skull and severe facial injuries according to von neida s father allvn von neida both boys are in very bad shape von neida said according to a bethle hem police report both victims were thrown from the jeep when it overturned the operator of the vehicle thomas reed 84 who was also thrown from the vehicle was charged with reckless driv ing two other students were also in the jeep gary chapis 84 and michael levantin 84 none of the three were seriously injured according to the police report which was completed by a police officer on the scene the accident took place at the intersection of selfridge and meade street which is near centennial i the report states that reed said he was traveling east on selfridge street and upon approaching meade made a hard left turn when he applied the brakes the vehicle flipped over he told police according to the report reed said the road was unfamiliar and that he was going fast but that he did not know exactly how fast chapis reportedly told police at the scene that upon approaching the inter section the jeep began sliding went upon two wheels and then flipped x-rated movie postponed by sac including informing the review board of its intentions of showing it , fioretti said we haven't heard from them since ' he said explaining that the sac went ahead with its plans after receiving no reply i nun the board the sac strongly believes that they the board will approve of the film fioretti said he said the film is being transferred i nun its present 35 mm size to a hi mm film suitable for the universi ty's facilities the reprocessing will be finished in two to four weeks fioretti said the board has not made a decision on the film yet according to watkins but it will probably not be shown by the end of the semester according to preston parr university vice president and dean of student affairs the board was just recently constituted and did not get around to reviewing the film before the distributor notified the sac about the necessary reprocessing before the film is shown however the board will review it " parr said twist big twist got mellow before a small crowd in packard lab friday see story page 7 bv mary frances donlky the x-rated film the canterbury tales originally planned as the student activities council sac film march 27 and 28 will be postponed until it can be reprocessed by the film's distributor according to pete fioretti 82 sac president the film will also be reviewed in members of the social and cultural events review board before it can be shown on campus said roger watkins assistant dean of students and chairman of the review board the board met several weeks ago to organize and formulate its goals but did not review the film watkins said the cancellation was not a censorship prob lem but a problem of logistics fioretti said the sac wanted to show an x-rated film this semester and tried to find one with artistic or cultural merit the canterbury tales is not really por nographic fioretti said adding that no one can argue with the merits of the book the sac went through the proper channels in contracting for the film although the sac would like to show the film this semester possibly during greek week fioretti said the board will be meeting to review it sometime late in april according to watkins it the film size had been correct for university equipment parr said then there would have been a more urgent need for the board to come together to review the film informed sources have told the brown and white that before the reprocessing of the film lewis reportedly told the board that it could not prohibit showing of the film since it had not been officially reviewed by the board reportedly a member or members of the board had approached lewis shortly before the scheduled showing of the film in an attempt to have it cancelled the purpose of the board according to gavin is to review any potentially sen sitive social or cultural activities on campus parr said
