lehigh university brown and white vol 92 — no 20 bethlehem pa friday november 14 1980 215 861-4184 stormy weather ib&w photo by andy rod winter weather took the valley by storm this week as high winds and low tempera tures contributed to generally brisker weather winter officially begins dec 21 campus-wide increased input in plans sought by jennifer wilson the provost's academic planning committee will give faculty members students and the university community as a whole greater participation in uni versity planning according to univer sity provost arthur humphrey humphrey said the committee would strive for planning with a wide debate and pointed out that this was the first time faculty and student participation in the university's planning process had been actively proposed according to humphrey previous input by these sectors of the university had been limited to what he termed a wish list or a statement of the wants or needs of various departments with regard to academic planning the faculty students and different departments would present these lists to those persons in charge of planning but would often-times see no results and receive no explanations humphrey said this was the major problem with planning at the university in the past he added humphrey said that planning under the provost's academic planning com mittee will provide better accountabil ity to the faculty and students and will offer a basis or reasons for the selection see input page 4 talk ib&w photo by john wkiman norma swanson author of the book for and about women titled our bodies ourselves speaks during a lecture tuesday night as ellen lobst 81 and carla askonas 81 look on see story page 10 confusion over sac rules cited in freshman election the student activities council sac election for freshmen repre sentative will be repeated nov 19 because of confusion over campaign ing rules according to kirn perrone 82 sac vice president and election chairman perrone said all three candidates for the position were uncertain as to where posters could be placed and two complained about violations after the election last wednesday we wanted to be fair to all the can didates perrone said explaining the decision to hold the election again between 250 and 300 students voted in the election she said calling the tur nout pretty good the ballots were not tabulated she added perrone attributed the candidates confusion to their lack of familiarity with the sac's election procedures they are freshman — there are cer tain things they just do not know about perrone said there were violations of sac rules by both of the candidates who complained she said the major violations were the placement of pos ters in areas that were off-limits including those that were an improper distance from the polling place the three candidates bob fioretti john lewis and harris salat will meet with perrone before sunday she said during the meeting per rone said she will explicitly state the rules " in an effort to clear up any questions the candidates may still have about next wednesday's election the election will not be a mockery it will be much more fair to the candi dates things are clear and above board perrone said everyone will be aware of rules and regulations as they should be interpreted " she said computer upgrade plan approved by michel.e gerencher a 1.5 million plan which would improve the university's computer sys tem over a five-year period has been approved by the board of trustees although the source of the program's funding is still undetermined according to ben wechsler director of the comput ing center where the university will get the money is still unsettled wechsler said some of the funds may come from the second phase of the century fund and or the university may borrow some of the money needed he said the university has several possible sources wechsler said but until we are further downstream we will not know anything for sure the improvements envisioned in the five-year plan to include ancillary upgrades as well as main computer upgrades require 1.5 million over the next five years he said this is over and above the current computing expenditures a majority of the improvements will be completed by the 1981-82 academic year although not everything will be done overnight he said despite the fact that the sources for funds are not settled wechsler pointed out the unquestionable need for the equipment our cdc 6400 is an obsolete computer he explained its capacity just could not keep up with demand he said the main computer of the cdc 8400 will be replaced by the cdc 720 a newer and larger model the peripher als of the cdc 6400 will be retained how ever and connected to the new cdc 720 an ibm 4331 will also be purchased by the university this completely new sys see fund page 9 inside vandalism p 5 concerned students p 6 home finale p 12
