price five cents several varsity positions open for new men o'neil to coach again elaborate program assured which will work up spirit to high pitch for rutgers game cross-country candidates work ing hard — intercollegiates to be held here brown & white team's work in practice shows that it is ready for tomorrow's tussle first game scheduled for nov 6 with girard college perm lafayette swarthmore listed at 7:30 p m sharp big crowd expected jimmie murphy will be fea tured speaker — bertolet and loeser to wrestle the lacrosse team began holding workouts daily with the beginning of the week on the upper field the fall practice helps in keeping the old men in condition and gives the new men a chance to get started and whipped into shape before the real spring practice begins all new men should take advantage of these daily practices if they expect to make the team in the spring many of last year's varsity men have been lost by graduation and this will give the new men ample opportunity to fill their places the schedule for next season has not been completed but we are assured a good one it will include the more important c jllege teams of the east coach o'neil who guided the team last year which won the inter collegiate honors will again as sume charge of the team in the spring butch maurer will be captain and the team is managed by g l child's assisted by l l drew there will be practice on the upper field every monday tues day and thursday from now on and all freshmen are urged to come out as one of the main objects of this fall practice is to acquaint the new men with the game many student officers appointed in the r o t c a short business meeting of the combined musical clubs was held wednesday night in drown hall followed by individual meetings of the glee and mandolin clubs e w bowden 21 was elected man ager for the cooling season but no election for president was held ow ing to the fact that l g barthold 22 who was elected president last year has returned to college both the mandolin and glee clubs are in need of more men and at the next try-outs it is urged that any men particularly from the freshman class who are musically inclined be present plans are now under way for a number of trips by the clubs and everything points to an unusually good season rehears als of the clubs will be announced either in the brown and white or on the eleven seeks games lehigh's soccer squad has been practicing daily on the upper field : for the last ten days under the di rection of capt gonzales and from the material on hand the outlook for a successful season is particu larly bright thirty-five candidates have reported for practice among them being e claxtom r claxton newlin menezes brewer and desch of last year's team with these men as a nucleus capt gon zales hopes to build up a team that will bring the championship banner of the pennsylvania intercollegiate state soccer association to the brown and white eleven every position on the team is to be com peted for and new candidates are ' urged to report for practice at once i the l a f will be given to those making the team and it is : probable that the l will be awarded to a championship team at present capt gonzales is coaching the squad but negotia tions are under way to secure a member of the bethlehem steel team to act in this capacity manager e w burgess has ar ranged games with perm lafa yette haverford swarthmore and girard college several games are pending with teams other than those in the league and will in volve trips away the following schedule has been approved nov 6 — girard college at phila delphia nov 13 — haverford at home nov 27 perai at home dec 4 — lafayette at aeston dec 11 swarthmore at swarth more more candidates for asst mann ager that the husky frosh football aggregation hope to play some more games this fall under the leadership of their cap tain g t abel they are trying to get games with some neighboring high schools of course that is a very hard thing to arrange at this late date capt abel has already approached the bethlehem prep and allentown high school to find if they have any open dates on their schedules if they are suc cessful in their quest for games it cannot be doubted but that they will give a good account of them selves , . all men of the squad should note that they are to have their picture taken at 1 o'clock tomorrow ail the men concerned should report promptly the first smoker of this year will be held in the basketball room of taylor gym tonight all the older men know just what good can be gotten out of these mass meetings and from the spirit shown by the freshmen in the last two parades they too will be out in force the way in which everyone turned out to see the team off last thursday night a week ago and also on last sunday night was a commendable exhibition of true college spirit and the things which will be a great help to all in keeping this feeling going are the smokers as cammot be definitely stated because the booster committee has not completed its arrangements entire ly but we are sure that the band will be there and that jimmie murphy is going to give a talk about the general dope on the game and how best the student-body in the stands can , co-operate with the team on saturday capt charles shaimotulski and lieut j a gra ham both of the r o t c unit will also give short talks major lang of the same department gave us some very entertaining bits last year and these two men who are new this year are sure to be well worth hearing there will be a wrestling bout between bertolet and loeser both of whom took pjart in some of the meets last year which promises to be very interesting a novelty stunt of some sort will also be staged just what it will be has not been stated but it no doubt will help in getting the pep started mingled in with all these attractions will be cheer ing and lots of music by the band which is this year about the finest that lehigh has had as usual there will be a good supply of pipes and tobacco on hand and room for every lehigh man to get in and lend a hand in securing the true idea of lehigh spirit this will be the best chance for all the freshmen to hear of the old traditions in lehigh's athletic history the student band was reorganiz ed this year with better prospects than it has ever enjoyed before as the position of leadership was left vacant by the graduation of the former leader a new head was chosen he is joe ricapito a special student at the university the band will be out to welcome rutgers and enliven the spirit of the home team the present indi cations are that the student band will unite as one individual body with the reserve officer's training corps if this action is carried out the organization will have the regular army uniform and at least some if mot all of the instruments will be obtained from the u s government final action in re gard to this will be taken in the near this game is the first important home contest of the year following the successful contest of last week with west virginia the coaching staff and team are looking forward to this game with hopes of a decisive victory the team came through last saturday practically intact the only injury being to frain's arm in this res pect they were much more fortu nate than west virginia who have two star players laid up for some time as a result of the game the team which starts will prob ably be much the same as that which played last week wilson will in all probability be at one end with gulick at the other good and cusick at tackles mccarthy and maginnes at guard and gold i man at center complete the line , lingle's injured leg is about in shape and he will probably start at quarterback with henzleman at full and larkin and herrington at th c halves lingle's pres ence in the backfield will add some needed weight at the secret scrimmage held wednesday the men showed a sav ageness on the attack which bodes ill for rutgers the varsity made some good gains against the scrubs and also showed ability to break up rutgers plays rote showed up well in practice and will probably get in the line-up during the game rutgers presents a team this year which is hardly up to the standard of their last year s combination both the line and backfield are con siderably weaker and the line will probably be somewhat lighter french the quarterback who did such good work last year until he was injured is at west point kel ley is at yale and several others have graduated garrett will also be missed in the backfield capt gardner and duffy are the veterans in the backfield ; summeril is at end while the line will contain some new material rutgers has not shown much in her games so far this season losing to ursinus 14-0 and winning from maryland state by only one touch down however rutgers may be counted upon to furnish stiff oppo sition as her playing is improving and she will be out to
