meeting between university repre sentatives and city officials wednesday afternoon m the office of mayor h gordon payrow • present at the meeting were the mayor public safety director irvin l good chief of police ed ward j donaher police captain frisoli head of the juvenile division lehigh associate deans pres ton parr and c b campbell assistant dean wil liam quay arcadia president v rodger digilio gryphon president geoffrey stiles brown and white editor j jeffrey stives and two students who had recently been attacked t ronald casper 65 and ronald j belletti 64 dean campbell opened the meeting citing recent reports of attacks on several students which had been reported to him casper and belletti told of being accosted recently by several youths belletti who was attacked m late march m the municipal parking lot behind the union bank on broad street was hospitalized for several days as a result of injuries from the beating casper told of a beating he and a friend re ceived from several teenagers m front of the royal restaurant last sunday night city and police officials at the meeting expressed concern and willingness to cooperate further m in vestigations of the incidents dean parr noted that there was increasing concern among university stu dents and officials as the attacks continued and ap peared to be aimed exclusively at lehigh arcadia president digilio asked that the police visit the campus to discuss the incidents with the victims m order to assure those who had been at tacked of police interest and to advance the investi gation digilio also requested increased police pa trols m areas where the attacks had occurred chief dcnaher and safety director good told the university representatives that if the investigation was to be successful and result m the apprehension of the offenders students must make immediate re ports of suspect vehicles or groups assembled m these areas representatives from both university and city groups pointed out that no positive identification of indivduals or vehicles thus far involved m the mci made additional attacks on four le high students were reported tues day morning m the vicinity of new and morton streets at eighth street and montclair ave nue and m front of packer mem orial church university representatives and sunburn seminar — clearing skies and warming temper atures found many lehigh men taking to the out-of-doors this week for a quick sizzle m the sun some brought suntan lotion sunglasses and raw skin while others brought baseballs mitts and streams of statistics streamlined future seen for lehigh a prediction that lehigh will eventually drop the freshman and sophomore years of study com bining the junior and senior years into a master's program was aired by dr charles a seidle vice president for administration on monday dr seidle a member of the fac ulty-administration-student panel discussing lehigh's second century said the program would probably eliminate the traditional bachelor's degree this streamlining of the university's academic role he ex plained would come as a result of establishment of more junior col leges and the extension of public education through 14 grades other panelists were dr glenn j christensen provost and vice president dr george p conard 11 professor of metallurgical en gineering prof robert b cutler head of the department of music richard j babin 64 and timothy b bird 64 seidle predicted the explosion of knowledge will demand increased opportunities for education beyond the traditional baccalaureate for large numbers of particularly able students babin m his statement said that an increase m student par ticipation m the governing of the university would play an import ant role m improving the mood or tone of the university he in dicated that the mood or tone and the morale of the lehigh student was now at a low point he stated that faculty members with whom he had spoken felt that they had little to do with the formulation of academic policy of the university seidle replied that he did not believe that a student should be m such a position the student does not have the knowlege of the discipline that a faculty member does and he should not be m a position to say what is to be taught he said christensen explained how mem bers of the faculty were elected to the faculty committee respon sible for the formulation of aca demic policy he said that he had attended these meetings for many years and does not know of a single faculty suggestion on aca demic policy which has not re ceived full and copious considera tion by the faculty committee cutler commented that auto cracy is the only word for educa tion both babin and bird mentioned the seeming priority the college of engineering has over the col lege of arts and science especial ly m regard to the building fund bird noted that two years ago there was 35 m the arts and science building fund but this year it is not even mentioned m the university statement christensen stated that no such olec m sokolov victor f isakov flagpole rites set for monday classes will be shortened next monday to allow time for the annual flagpole day ceremonies to commence at 11:30 a.m at the flagpole in case of rain the ceremonies will be held on the lower floor of grace hall flagpole day will include an nouncement of cyanide and omi cron delta kappa election results presentation of athletic and leader ship awards dedication of the epitome announcements of class election results and the tradition al passing of the senior cane china berated for war stand by mel snyder the light-hearted attitude of red china to ward war and peace is unforgiveable and must not be permitted to exist victor f isakov third sec retary to the soviet embassy told a university cen ter audience of nearly 300 monday they say that war is not so horrible as the rus sians say that maybe not so many millions will be killed isakov said but you can't speak on whether china wants war because it doesn't have the means to destroy the capitalistic system so their threats are just big words isakov was accompanied by oleg sokolov polit ical attache to the soviet embassy both are grad uates of the institute of international relations at the university of moscow and are presently making a tour of u.s colleges m an effort to improve un derstanding between the united states and russia the department of international relations sponsored the lecture for every human being m the world your coun try and mine have a destructive force of 80 tons of tnt isakov said m prefacing his discussion so we must find areas which unite us not divide us isakov cited 1963 as an important milestone m soviet-u.s relations citing agreement on the mos cow treaty and the treaty forbidding the placement of nuclear weapons m space the kremlin-to-white 5 students get u.d.'s 1 suspended three seniors a freshman and a sophomore were assessed uni versity demerits by the disciplin ary board last month a sophomore chemistry engineer was reprimanded placed on final warning and suspended from the university from the close of the spring 64 semester to the opening of the spring 65 semester for par ticipation m off-campus miscon duct tending strongly to bring the good name of the university into public disrepute the misconduct involved viola tion of state law prohibiting pur chase and consumption of alcohol ic beverages by minors and sub sequent actions m disregard of good order otherwise the student had already been under disciplin ary warning and previous assess ment of three disciplinary de merits two senior businessmen were reprimanded warned and assessed one disciplinary demerit each for involvement m actions designed to circumvent university and trustee regulations governing registration and operation of motor vehicles on campus a freshman arts-engineering stu dent was reprimanded warned and assessed three disciplinary de merits for participation m off-cam pus misconduct tending strongly to bring the good name of lehigh in to public disrepute the miscon duct involved violation of the state law prohibiting purchase and con sumption of alcoholic beverages by
