lehigh university brown and white vol 75 — no 42 bethlehem pa — tuesday april 14 1964 866-0331 old armor made in 1900 handsome replica a statuesque coat of armor gleaming proudly and smacking of antiquity was delivered to the fine arts department last week as part of the estate of a late alumnus prof francis j quirk head of the department estimated the style of the armor as circa 1540 he admittedly was doubtful and hopeful that the piece was genuine he planned to give the tall relic sev eral coats of clear lacquer encase it in glass and dis play it in the alumni memorial building galleries quirk's precaution of holding publicity on the statue until its authenticity could be verified was well founded after the armor had been transport ed to the allentown museum the head of the arms and armor division of the metropolitan museum pronounced the steely exoskeleton a reproduction circa 1890-1910 rather than an original as quirk philosophically said he recognized it as a replica from twenty paces the armor had been given to the university by the late george alvin rupp 28 who said his sister mrs a charles kuss jr believed the replica to be an original rupp then a lawyer had been given the armor several years ago by a g.i in lieu of legal fees the anonymous g.i reportedly had gotten the piece in germany during world war 11 although disappointed that the armor was not as old as he had hoped prof quirk believes that the romantic armor can still be displayed as an interesting reproduction the armor he said un fortunately isn't a museum level piece but has been kept in impeccable condition and is worthy of dis play lamor dodd to discuss painting in talks here lamar dodd american artist critic and phi beta kappa visiting scholar will present a public lecture at 8:15 the davis room of the university center thursday at 8 p.m controversy arose when it was learned from several sources that laub had been told that he could not speak on the topic of the state depart speak on any topic other than what i saw in castro's cuba preston parr associate dean of students told student representatives friday that there was ap parently some misunderstanding on whether laub would be able to speak on other topics particularly if he was actually under federal indictment for breaking the ban as was believed at the time the petition was signed the discussion with parr also revealed that there was considerable doubt on the part of the officers of alpha sigma phi regarding the accept ance of the petition by the university if laub was invited to come without certain specific restrictions the actual petition read in part mr laub has agreed to limit his talk to what i saw in castro's cuba but alpha sigma phi officers indicated that ihcy had requested laub to make this concession a number of faculty and students last week expressed concern over the apparent attempt by the university to place restrictions on speakers and their topics it was this concern that precipitated the meeting with parr on friday after that meeting it became clear that the single most influential factor in the controversy was i the uncertainty of university offi cials over whether or not laub was actually under indictment by fri day it was clear that he was not this fact according to students who met with parr was respon sible for the dean's modification of position regarding laub's visit it now appears that there will be no limitation placed upon an swers to questions which laub wishes to make thursday his speech however will remain on the topic noted earlier before the
