sudden and drastic deterioration in the american way of life radio tv news analyst howard k smith told an audience of 250 in packard lab auditorium tuesday night the address co-sponsored by the cooperative lecture series and the interfraternity council was the final event to be presented by cls this year the veteran newsman pointed out a number of u.s internal problems which he said were more crucial at present than foreign affairs problems among them were the problems of poverty inade quate education sluggishness in congress and pub lic naivete toward the concept of big government the american public he said had lost track cf poverty but it has recently been rediscovered freeways which carry people around slum areas and self-maintained suburbs prevent affluent people from having contact with slums but fully one fifth of the nation's population is without adequate means the malcolm x type of negro leadership consti tutes another internal problem smith said if the present negro leaders fail in their attempts at non violent integration new leadership is likely to be of the violent destructive variety negroes have lost their fear he said in the question period after the talk smith said that malcolm x was very dangerous in that he would be a symbol of violence many young negroes but not a majority would participate in violence he declared smith urged more rigorous requirements for teachers many grammar school teachers could be filling-station attendants — but not much else he said it takes money and a change in attitude to com bat these problems he schools have been invited to the all-university mixer to be deld tomorrow in grace hall the arcadia-s ponsored dance will start at 8 p.m the lehigh jazz moderns will provide music tickets will be sold on a one-to-one ratio and can be bought at the door for 1.50 couples will be admitted to the dance and can leave early to attend living group parties junior concert slated to precede hp dance the class of 1965 will present a concert by the fcur lads four seasons and the big three prior to the friday night houseparty dance replacing the traditional big name band after the concert dancing to the music of johnny and the holi days will be featured on the upper floor of grace hall entertainment will begin at 8:30 p.m r couple and 4.50 per couple if ickets are purchased in lots of 20 r more last year the price of tickets as 6.00 per couple the price re uction was made possible by conomizing on the lavish decora ion traditionally associated with he houseparty dance during intermission of the con ert crowning of the houseparty ueen will take place ifc approves changes in frosh pledge rules the interfraternity council decided monday that a freshman may be pledged regardless of his first semester average however each fraternity must accept full responsibility for a freshman's average at the end of the spring semester under the old ifc ruling the ambiguous gentleman's bid allowed houses to take pledges on scholastic probation without having the freshmen's average included in the house average a fraternity can no longer take a social pledge whose average doesn't count in the house average it is expected that a fraternity taking a man on probation will place an increased emphasis on scholas tics since it must not only be concerned with the freshman's average but also its effect on the house average ifc feels that this new rule will cause fraternities to think twice before accepting a man on probation also at the meeting the cancer drive was announced as being planned for next week the ifc set the tentative date for next year's ifc weekend at march 20 naacp man to talk here an naacp official who was arrested last week will discuss civil rights crises in a lecture at the brodhead and packer com munity at 8 p.m sunday philip savage tri state area sec retary of the naacp who has been campaigning against alleged segregation in chester schools is now free on bond his appear ance is being sponsored by the hillel society soph draws suspension three assessed demerits a sophomore engineer was sus pended from the university for a . semester and three other students were assessed university demerits in february and march according to the office of dean of students the sophomore engineer was assessed one demerit for secondary involvement as a receiver of cig arettes without proper authoriza tion from a vending machine maintained by the residence halls council for his persisting effort to de ceive university officers in this connection he was assessed two more disciplinary demerits for his accumulation of five demerits he was suspended from the uni versity for one semester this action was subordinate to action of the committee on stand ing of students on june 6 1963 by which the student was drop , ped for poor scholarship a sophomore arts man was assessed one demerit for repeated violation of the general regulation requiring registration of any stu dent motor vehicle operated on campus and for disregard of speci fic individual instructon based on his clear ineligibility for a sopho more motor vehicle permit for culpable error in filing an incorrect university document a sophomore business student was assessed one disciplinary demerit the demerit will be held in sus pense and rescinded on his appli cation to the committee on dis cipline if his record is otherwise unmarred at time of clearance for graduation for conduct on another campus tending to bring the good name of lehigh university into disrepute a junior business student was assessed one demerit this action was recommended by the ifc judiciary committee in addition four freshmen were formally reprimanded by the dean of students for an instance of dis regard of the laws of pennsylvania and the regulations of the univer sity governing possession of alco holic beverages in the residence halls action was taken on the recommendation of the freshman quadrangle disciplinary board on the recommendation of the mcclihtic-marshall house disci plinary board a junior arts man and a sophomore engineer were formally reprimanded by the dean of students for unauthorized entry into a residence halls sup ply room for complicity in the filing of an incorrect university document a sophomore arts student was reprimanded and warned by the committee on discipline a sophomore engineer was repri manded and warned for unauthor ized removal of a telephone instru ment from a place of public ac commodation the action was recommended by the ifc judiciary committee and the rains came — after three consecutive days of rain most lehigh students found themselves suffering from water on the brain this student found a different type of pleasure in his carton than the manufacturer a residence halls sup ply room for complicity in the filing of an incorrect university document a sophomore arts student was reprimanded and warned by the committee on discipline a sophomore engineer was repri manded and warned for unauthor ized removal of a telephone instru ment from a place of public ac commodation the action was recommended by the ifc judiciary committee and the rains came —
