lehigh university brown and white vol 75 — no 39 bethlehem pa — friday april 3 1964 866-0331 mid-term valentines fall to five year low somebody studied a record low percentage of valentines has been attained by lehigh freshmen and sophomores this semester recording to statistics released last week by the office of the dean of students only 449 men 33.5 percent of lehigh's 1341 fresh men and sophomores received official notice that they were failing courses at midsemester last se mester 35.9 percent of the two classes received fail ure notification the statistics which span the past 10 semesters show that this spring's percentage is the lowest last spring 40.1 percent received valentines the highest second-semester number m the five years covered by the report the report also indicates that this year the greatest number of sophomores and freshmen m years have left the university between semesters it is the fourth straight year that the drop-out figure has increased between semester 156 freshmen and sophomores left lehigh compared to 130 m 1963 115 m 1962 and 108 m 1961 samuel h missimer director of admissions ex plained that the increase is probably caused by the greater number of students who choose to take a semester off m the middle of their sophomore year they've been m school all their lives missimer said and they begin to wonder if they shouldn't take time out perhaps to see if they can earn a dollar or two missimer explained that this trend was not unique at lehigh and that life magazine recently pointed this out m a feature ar ticle in a way it's the result of bet ter guidance missimer said stu dents are encouraged to drop out before they record a completely poor performance when a boy is foundering it is a good idea to take a year off i know it happened to me i went from high school into the war world war ii and then to college and i don't think i would've made it through with out that experience solons offer amendment resolution passed by unanimous vote arcadia passed a resolution wednesday night to plrce a proposed amend ment on the ballots of the class elections may 6 7 and 8 the proposed amendment to the arcadia constitution would revise arcadia membership to include two freshmen representatives and two more elected representatives it would eliminate five represen tatives appointed by interest groups and would establish class representatives appointed by class cabinets comparisons on the present re presentation and the proposed representation show present — 15 representatives seven elected and eight appointed one each from ifc rhc town council publications musical groups drama and debating religious groups and honoraries proposed — 16 representatives nine elected and seven appointed one each from ifc rhc town council the junior class sopho more class two from the fresh man class the purpose of the proposed resolution according to v rodger digilio 64 arcadia president is to eliminate the three biggest complaints voiced concerning arcadia the revision has been designed to make arcadia more represen tative of the true interest groups at the university to give fresh men representation and to stimu late more student interest m arcadia the revision went under a further resolution proposed by representative robert a mar mon 65 and was approved after lengthy revision by all but two arcadians who abstained the two representatives elected by the freshman class cabinet shall serve as non-voting members from the time of their election m late no vember until the first meeting of the following semester from that first meeting until the last meeting of the following fall semester the freshman repre sentatives would serve as voting members as do the other arcad chamber singers perform monday the riverside chamber singers will present the final program m the 1963-64 committee on the performing arts series m grace hall at 8:15 p.m monday the chamber singers repertoire ranges from the madrigal school of the 15th and 16th centuries through contemporary compositions members of the group are alan baker baritone barbara crouch mezzo-soprano david dodds tenor elisabeth humes soprano eileen laurence soprano and an thony tamburello bass-baritone lehigh faculty staff and students will be admitted to the concert upon presentation of their univer sity i.d cards and may purchase guest tickets for 1.00 guest tickets will be on sale at the student activities desk uni versity center and m the office of public information alumni mem orial building the riverside singers who will col lege and community organiza tions the program is sponsored by the university interfraternity council and the cooperative lec ture series before joining abc news m 1961 mr smith was at cbs for 20 years during most of these years he was chief cbs european correspondent winning four con secutive overseas press club annual awards for best reporting from abroad in 1957 he became cbs washington correspondent and m march 1961 was appointed chief correspondent and manager for the washington bureau among his european assign ments was coverage of nazi ger many from where he was later expelled for his denunciation of nazism after the united states entered world war 11 he reported on occupied europe from switzer land until 1944 when he moved to paris he covered the allied sweep through
