and red china will be complete said leon volkov soviet affairs editor for newsweek magazine at the junior-senior banquet thurs day volkov a former lieutenant colonel in the russian air force who defected to the west in 1945 attributed the break to the tre mendous growth in red china an industrial revolution is tak ing place right now in red china he said this industrial revolution to gether with a tremendously high birth rate is making it necessary for red china to expand he said he indicated that india will not be invaded as an expansion area what will they find there another 400,000,000 people russia must take note that china is surging and growing said volkov for a russia that is an immediate neighbor to china a strong china is a dangerous china mao tse-tung is not a satellite volkov said in explaining the split between the two countries russia needed help to quell revolutions in its european satellite nations during the late 19505 he said and mao tse-tung was willing to aid but asked a price at the time khrushchev had to comply but later backed out of his agreement this said volkov was the begin ning of the trouble in addition to this dispute there has always been distrust between russia and china he said there is a russian saying said volkov that when you have a chinese for a friend you don't need an enemy the russian's distrust of china stems from the long history of wars between the two nations he said he added that the united states does not see china in the same perspective as russia be cause the u.s lacks russia's his tory of conflict with china according to volkov china is now attempting to win over the underdeveloped nations of the world that are under russian in fluence he explained that china tells these nations that russia will not risk her position and wealth in a war for their defense china is poor however and does not have a great deal to lose in such a war and will support these na tions he said volkov commenting on khrush chev and his part in the growth and spread of communism stated you must remember that khrush chev comes from the generation that remembers the old russia for him capitalism is what he saw in the old russia and it left a deep scar on him when he came to this country he saw a different kind of capitalism and it pained him as a result volkov said khrush chev is now telling the soviet people more about america than ever before he is hesitant in his policy but he remains a commun ist this early experience has made a fanatic communist of him he can't throw it off and maybe for his own good he better not he said khrushchev's hesitation has caused him to lose ground to mao leftist advocate praises recent cuban advances by j j strves calling the travel ban on cuba which led to his present federal indictment a civil liberties issue levi laub commented thursday night on his trip to cuba last year speaking before about 100 stu dents and faculty members in packard laboratory auditorium laub a member of the student committee for travel to cuba and a worker-member of an admittedly left-wing organization known as progressive labor covered topics ranging from the current economic situation in cuba to what he thinks of the state department's travel ban a portion of the mccarran walter act of 1951 the present travel ban is a racist law said laub because it leaves the united states open only to white anglo saxons and members of the aryan race it hinders travel to commu nist nations laub said all the socialist countries are ruled out he added although the state department termed the ban on cuba essential to the interests of u.s citizens laub said there are manifold in consistencies in the requirements he noted for example that u.s citizens were allowed to go to lebanon even while u.s troops were there during the crisis the same was true in panama when diplomatic ties with that country were broken this year he said only the socialist countries are consistently banned the soviet union is open cuba is closed laub said we made the trip to cuba because we considered u.s policy to be reactionary laub said we made it to attract attention noting that the state depart ment had claimed that it banned travel to cuba in order to protect citizens traveling there laub add ed that the real problems of the group began when they returned to the u.s throughout his talk on government ban on travel to the island expresses his opinions in a talk last week in packard auditorium parr to travel to africa with crossroads group by william hylton preston parr associate dean of students will travel to africa this summer with the crossroads africa program in an interview parr discussed his trip he has served on the crossroads africa committee at lehigh which is a committee of arcadia i have long felt that students needed experiences of this kind to give them perspective cultural tradition a chance to see other parts of the world and to see these things in perspective not as tour ists parr said i have seen that students who go don't look at the world in the same way when they return it's an important educa tional experience as i have come to know the program and the directors my re spect and admiration has grown i thought if i had the chance to go i would i am constantly urging students to go out and put themselves in new kinds of experience and it is very desirable for people who do this to know what they are talking about crossroads africa is a private organization which arranges to have groups of students teachers and professors visit various african coun tries while there the groups are joined by similar african groups and together they work on some project that the country has arranged to have completed by crossroads africa i have a great respect for the people at the head of the program parr said he called the program a nice combination of idealism and tough mindedness and added that the program was carefully thought out and well planned queen balloted limited to party ticketholders only those students presenting houseparty dance tickets will be permitted to vote for the houseparty queen candidates pictured on page 3 the eight candidates were chosen from 25 entries received from 23 fraternities and living groups tomorrow in front of the supply bureau in the university center from 9:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m students can vote for their four favorite candidates on the ballot on page three th e election will be run by the 1965 class cabinet the four girls receiving the highest number of votes will become the finalists houseparty dance tickets are still available at the students activi ties desk in the university center they will also be available at the door of grace hall during the dance on friday night king henry iv glowers
