c b 0 collier dr ibrahim mansoury dr james h robinson freshman class received mid-term warnings j d leith dean of students attributed the large drop in the number of warnings to the fresh men class the sophomore class accounted for about the same num ber of valentines as past sopho more classes dean leith gave no exict rea son for the improvement of fresh man performance but said that brighter freshmen better second ary schools since the advent of sputnik and cyanide all may have contributed to the reduced num ber of valentines valentines mid-semester fail ure warnings were sent out to the parents of 537 freshmen and soph omores last week — 98 fewer than in the fall of 1962 the office of the dean of stu dents reported a nine per cent re duction from last year in the per centage of freshmen and sopho more total enrollment who re ceived valentines those receiving valentines this term made up 35.9 per cent of the total population of the two classes it was the lowest percentage in five years for the first time in many years less than half of the leith also cited a noticeable drop in absences saying better class attendance may have had an affect on valentine distribution since the institution of new attendence regulations this semes ter class attendence has signifi cantly improved according to leith bertrand willard professor emeritus of geology attributes the use of the term valentine to the issuance of mid-semester failure warnings in the second week of february coinciding with valen tine's day back in the early twenties america and the future of africa the first intercollegiate con ference of operation crossroads africa will be held at lehigh today and tomorrow delegates from 22 east coast colleges are expected to attend the cenference his excellency g b o collier ambassador to the united states from sierra leone will be the keynote speaker at the opening banquet tonight dr glenn j christenscn vice president and provoat of the uni versity will welcome the delegates also speaking at the banquet will be g sander davis conference chairman and dr james h rob inson founder and director of operation crossroads africa inc educated in africa collier became a founding member of the peo ple's national party in 1958 and represented sierra leone at the africa conference he was recently named to his present position dr elliot p skinner professor of anthropology at columbia uni versity will speak on pan-africanism tomorrow morning he led crossroads groups to the ivory coast and nigeria in 1960 and 1962 a film entitled operation crossroads africa pilot project for the peace corps will be shown at 11 a.m tomorrow the agenda far tomorrow afternoon includes five conferences discussing various aspects of africa all discussions begin at 1:48 p.m the first conference central and south africa will be moder ate by harry lang worthy of the boston university africa studies pro gram langworthy was a member of the 1961 crossroads africa group in northern rhodesia northern africa the second conference will be moderated by dr ibrahim mansoury professor of mental health and child development mills college of education he has conducted seven summer tours for college groups through europe and the middle east dr skinner will moderate the third conference french-speaking africa e jefferson murphy vice president of the african-american insti tute washington d c has been active in establishing offices of the aai throughout africa he will lead the conference on english speaking east africa the fifth conference english-speaking west africa will be mod erated by dr martin kilson lecturer on government at harvard uni versity he is connected with the harvard university center for inter national affairs and has done field work in sierra dollars apiece tonight and all day saturday at the student activities desk in the university center hirbse mann texan tells of deficient universities by william reamy accusing south american edu cation of sluggishness in a talk here wednesday dr frank m tiller director of international affairs and dean of engineering at the university of huston cited several causes and suggested sev eral improvements lack of administrative co-ordin ation is a primary cause of defi ciencies he said blaming weak or ganization ard weak authority for much laxity each faculty at sduth american univeraitiea is a self-contained college he said the university presidency is weakened by that and is further weakened because a council of students professors and deans is see ir page 3 campus chest contributions totaled 1,500 as of wednesday evening ron kahlow 65 chair man of the drive said the cam paign is doing much better than last year kahlow said he expects an in crease in total contributions as termination of the campaign ap proaches he hopes to reach the goal of 3,500 by the close of the drive at noon tomorrow the signs placed at many points on the campus are part of the in tensive campaign kahlow said the committee is stressing the in dividual approach this year rather than the living group approach used in past years living group total contributions will still be compiled to determine
