president neville and dr leonard lead the founder's day procession neville looks to future campus of tomorrow see founders page z lehigh's 85th founder's day ex ercises begjm sunday afternoon with the traditional march from the front of the alumni memorial building to packer memorial church led by a colrtr guard of army and air force rotc cadets the graduates and those who were to receive degrees moved solemnly toward the church entrance dr nelson j leonard who was to receive the honorary degree of doctor and science and dr harvey a neville university president led members of the faculty and ad ministration into the church the exercises inside packer church were opened with an invo cation by the rev raymond e fuessle university chaplain fol lowing the scripture lesson dr leonard delivered the main ad dress entitled ingredients study freedom and excitement the announcement of prizes and donors by dr charles a seidle vice president for administration followed the anthem plorate filii israel sung by the university chapel choir dr neville then awarded course degrees in the three colleges grad uate degrees and honorary de grees the ceremonies were concluded with the singing of the university hymn the benediction and the recessional immediately after the exer cises in the church the entire as semblage moved to the flagpole be'.ow the university center for the singing of the alma mater a total of 145 bachelors master's and doctor's degrees were awarded study freedom and excitement are ingredients essential to a teacher in today's academic sys tem dr nelson j leonard told graduates at lehigh's 85th pound er's day sunday dr leonard a lehigh alumnus and former rhodes scholar who is now professor of organic chemis try at the university of illinois was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of science after deliver ing the commencement address today's problem of study leonard said is one of continu ously studying and perfecting he asked the graduates to recognize the reading and hard work the weighing and culling which have enabled your lehigh professors to share with you con temporary knowledge and skills their continuing study and prac tice is of course their duty but mere study is only con templation he continued pro fessors today expect to play a ma jor role in refining old knowledge expanding present knowledge and in applying all available knowl edge the necessary climate for this activity he said is freedom he pointed out that the free society in the united states has fostered a great creative period in science but more freedom than this is ing answer well it's being adapted to uses and there have been many s departments that would like to move in there for some of their activities principally however the things that have gone in have been re search relating to our materials science center mainly in the areas of metallurgy and solid state physics we have installed in that building now our new x-ray dif fraction equipment which is avail able for use by all departments and a new electron microscope the only other one on campus is in the chemistry department it is a much older model and will not do the things which this one will do other minor equipment will go in we took out all the mining university gets grantof$5,4oo from eastman e??tman kodak co hss given lehigh an unrestricted direct grant cf 5,400 under the company's aid to-education program for 1963 the grant is based on the num ber of university graduates who have been employed by kodak turing the past five years kodak giants o the university since 1855 have amounted to 30,700 the company's aid-to-education program for 1963 calls for direct grants research grants special grants and a number of other con tributions totaling about 1.2 mil lion marty — a junior at the university of vermont blond five foot-seven marty spends most of her free time skiing in the nearby white mountains we photographed her near her home in mystic conn with lehigh's centennial convocation less than 10 days away ticket requests indicate a near capacity turnout for all events of the three-day program the convocation has produced not only great local interest but father widespread attention from leh?gh alumni throughout the coun try according to james h duchine centennial campa'gn director he cited examples of persons coming from as far as texas and california to attend the affair with tickets scheduled to go into the mail today requests have been recelycd for up to 2,700 for eech symposium demr.nd has been gres test for saturday afternoon's panel the use of man's incredible powers dean campbell's office handling the requests from crmpus living groups had approximately 500 addiiional ticket requests for the pro grams - - " grace hall the site o the symposiums and the hcrcrs convocation will look like a theater for the convocation a special stage is being constructed for the prog sms padded sec i backs have been purchased to accommodate spectators on the bleacher si-ats convocation director warren gould stressed that grace hall will look as little like a gym as possible should the crowd overflow the confines of the lower floor arrange ments are being made to relay the programs via closed circuit television to the upper floor of the hall television monitors will also be used in parts of the hotel bethlehem's ballroom for the dinner meetings though admission to the convocation panels will be for ticket holders only tickets are readily available and students will be able to obtain them at the door on the days of the
