annual found er's dry exercise on oct 13 dr leonard and dr alfred s romer professor of zoology at harvard university will receive honorary degrees at the exercises dr leonard joined the faculty of the university of illinois in 1942 as a research assistant he was promoted to professor of organic chemistry in 1952 and served in a rotational position as head of the department of organic chem phia academy of natural sciences for 1963 he holds honorary doc torates from amherst dartmouth harvard and buffalo founder's day ceremonies were initiated in 1879 to honor asa packer during exercises in pack er memorial church 153 bache lor's master's and doctor's degrees will be conferred upon seniors and graduate students istry from 1953 to 1961 dr leonard is the recipient of the american chemical society award for creative work in organic chem istry he has contributed chapters to several texts in addition to be ing the author of research papers dr romer has been alexander agassiz professor of zoology at harvard since 1947 he joined the faculty in 1934 as proifessior of zoology and curator of vertebrate paleontology dr romer received the mary clark thompson medal of the na tional academy of sciences in 1954 and the hayden memorial geologic 1 award of the philadel charles concert termed exciting by john kozero the small musician with heavy glasses a blue velvet jacket and a grin the size of his piano keyboard shuffled to the stage at grace hall on saturday night his name is ray charles and his style is genius many in the audience had never seen charles before and had been teased for almost an hour by the ray charles orchestra who tried to appease the sro crowd with some pretty fair jazz the syncopation was to a large extent lost on the audience they wanted charles and said so shouting in small choruses from time to time loudly the un est was allayed by fine solo work from the saxaphone and trumpet departments unfortunately the drummer never had an oppor tunity to tell a story on the skins when the final number had been played the musicians received a big hand for their music and a bigger hand for leaving the engineers wanted excitement and exciting charles is at the beginning of his act he was led to stage flapping his arms at his side we wonder whether this gesture was an indication that he was going to fly or was already flying after a few bars on the horn he lumbered over to the piano adjusted the mike and growled the eager audience growled back in satisfaction the audience loved it the expensive resume of the man sold in the lobby stated that charles let scholarship aid ihe second and third articles will deal with the trimester system as it might apply to lchigh and the development program v the following is an abridged transcript of the interview question one of the questions which has been asked on campus re cently is in what direction does the university plan to direct the new funds from the increased tuition answer our annual operations costs are constantly going up we are determined to increase faculty salaries and this has been going on gradually for a number of years and we have made great prog ress but faculty salaries are still considerably behind the salaries of professional people of equivalent training and experience all the national experts agree that the salaries of people in educa ton must continue to rise in order to catch up to some degree there is no expectation that they will compete with industrial salaries but the major reason that the salaries should go up is that it will enable us to attract able people into teaching at the college and university level in competition with careers in other fields in most subject matter fields especially the sciences mathematics and particularly in recent years engineering and economics you com pete with industry and government not just with educational institu • tions the salaries in many of the leading educational institutions have gone up especially those that have large endowments and/or state support so coming down to the question of lehigh we must continue our improvement of faculty salaries in order to hold the able and prom ising people we have on our staff and to attract other high quality faculty that we need to add either to expand somewhat or for normal replacements the deans and department heads who have to recruit new faculty members find themselves at a very considerable disadvantage in com peting with many other institutions this doesn't mean the small liberal arts colleges and teachers col leges but real universities where the men would naturally be attracted because of opportunities for professional growth there for research for
