when an electrical charge of 850,000 volts went through his body in an experiment recently walter harry church 2 years old merely grinned and continued to nibble his all-day sucker the child's grandfather harry c white supervisor of the indus trial relations of the company was in charge of the demonstrations mr white began his demonstra around him in the edison light ing institute at the edison lamp works of the general electric company harrington n j stood experienced gray-haired men of sci ence and alert young engineers they observed how such a power ful electric shock is perfectly harm less with extremely low amperage the senior class book commit tee under the direction of don wright are making a strenuous effort to complete the collection of all senior ballots and assess ments before the christmas hol idays cooperation is urged from every senior — and is absolutely necessary if the book is to be successful plans and production of the entire book are dependent upon the senior section and the immediate return of the ballots is a necessity these may be turned in to any member of the senior class book committee or directly to wright at the sigma chi house tions by shooting twelve-inch violet sparks out of a high-frequency ma chine and grounding them through his own body by means of a rod then mr white finally managed to get his small grandson to place a neon-vapor experimental bulb against the demonstrator's head with the contact thus made the child drew the 850,000 volt dis charge from the high-frequency machine causing the bulb to light as the circuit was formed mr white stated that although this experiment was practically safe there was a possibility of fatal re sults if any part of the machinery did not function properly in which case high amperage would be pro duced home club fetes football team three house dances enliven dull season this new gift shall be used for permanent endowment for the min ing engineering department and no it con tinue flying safely while he performs other duties mr conner in his talk took the audience from new york on an im aginary flight over the t a t air rail line running from new york to los debates will be with cedar crest at 10 p m feb 26 and with bethany college bethany west virginia feb 28 lehigh will uphold the negative side in the debate with cedar crest which will be on the proposition resolved that the united states should withdraw from the kellogg peace pact the discussion with bethany college will probably be on the proposition resolved that the evils of the machine on march 31 as yet no def inite schedule has been adopted be sides the cedar crest debate the only definite date is with albright lehigh will be represented at al bright by the negative team jan 10 it will be a non-decision debate a practice debate will be held with cedar crest jan 16 lehigh will defend the affirmative of the question during march there will be about ten debates it is the practice of several col leges to broadcast two or three de dates each year the tendency is to make them non-decision discussions and thus make debating more of an art than an argument professor macdougall the lehigh coach is in favor of non-decision debates he says that it makes the discussions more of a pleasure and interesting if no decisions are given the eng lish debate more for the pleasure obtained from it than for the glory in winning it is undecided whether the radio debates will be non-de cision discussions or not if deci sions are to be given the judges will hear the debate over the radio school didn't have enough spirit the students involved in the dis pute have been placed on indefinite probation some however were caught in their act by kansas stu dents and suffered not only proba tion but also a hair cut which was given to them by a barber at the request of the kansas students the pumped storage system of the rocky river hydro-electric plant was explained by lyle a whitsit hydraulic engineer for the united gas improvement company at a meeting of the civil engineer ing society which was held tuesday evening in the packard auditorium mr whitsit substituted for noel d justin who could not attend the meeting due to illness the rocky river power plant which is owned by the connecticut light and power company con sists of a main plant situated about 100 feet below a small sized res ervoir and about 80 feet below it another smaller power plant at times when current consumption it low the water coming from the main plant is converted into elec tric energy by the lower plant and this energy which is really excess energy is used to pump the used water back to the reservoir in this way the water is used over and ov er again at first this process of returning the water to its source seems to be an inefficient one to the technical mind however it has been proved that this method is a useful one in some cases drainage area small in the case of the rocky river plant the drainage area of the reser voir was small and the filling of the reservoir in minimum time present ed a real problem however by the use of the pumped storage system the problem was solved the electri cal energy which at times is in ex cess and hence would be wasted along the line is utilized in filling the reservoir and imparting poten tial energy to the used water times of peak load this system is cut off and both plants are used to generate electricity the repumping is essentially an intermittent pro cess other important advantages of the pumped storage system are that due to a more constant head the average output of the plant is high er than it would otherwise be also it gives a greater assurance of keep ing the plant in operation during times of draught mr whitsit gave his lecture with illustrations of the various units and also with photographs which were handed to the students for inspec tion mr whitsit worked together with noel d justin on this pro ject after his lecture the meeting was opened to discussion barrows gives talk tuba steel foundations was the subject of the second student's lec ture by daniel j barrows 30 which was given prior to the main lecture barrows has spent three summers working with the spencer white and prentiss company of new york who specialize in this type of work his lecture was aid ed by illustrations of the various details showing the method used for the complete installation ofrflywia foundations /^ in making a tuba steel foinidation long steel tubes are force<binu l th ground by a compressed aigil&iik mer until the end rests on solid rock the dirt and clay thui^ught by these tubes is then rempvmwd a combination air and hydraulic gun after the earth is totally re moved the hollow portion of the tube is filled with concrete this is done by a spillway which conducts the ready-mixed concrete from a truck to the tubes these motor trucks are fitted with a large re volving steel cylinder in which the concrete is mixed during the run from the storage house to the scene of operations the steel tubes are generally set us in combination of four which are then equipped with a head of reinforced concrete upon which the columns of the building are rested the advantage of this method is that a solid foundation can be placed over an area which contains underground springs oft en in excavating for a foundation the excavation becomes flooded due to underground springs necessitat ing pumping and possible suspen sion of operation president spangler opened the meeting at 8:15 p m amd intro duced the student speaker will be a non-decision debate a practice debate will be held with cedar crest jan 16 lehigh will defend the affirmative of the question during march there will be about ten debates it is the practice of several col leges to broadcast two or three de dates each year the tendency is to make them non-decision discussions and thus make debating more of an art than an argument professor macdougall the lehigh coach is in favor of non-decision debates he says that it makes the discussions more of a pleasure and interesting if no decisions are given the eng lish debate more for the pleasure obtained from it than for the glory in winning it is undecided whether the radio debates will be non-de cision discussions or not if deci sions are to be given the judges will hear the debate over the radio
