marks 55th year lehigh university opened its doors for the 55th time last wed nesday sept 22 when opening exercises for the 1920-21 term were held at 3 30 p m in packer memorial chapel the address of the day was made by the president henry sturgis drinker who said in part : today opens lehigh's 55th year of service and the year opens un der good auspices to those of us whose lehigh record goes far back into the distant past — who have seen the alma mater grow from a student body of forty in 1856 tc over one thousand in 1920 a teach ing force at our start of seven tc over ninety today and who remcr ber that our entire plant in the early days of our start was christ mas hall with its chapel room on the first floor class rooms on the second floor and dormitory rooms on the third or top floor may well take pride in the certainty that this institution founded for service to the youth of our nation has well filled its appointed task from the beginning lehigh has had the ad vantage of being governed by ? small but always able and devoted board of trustees to whose good judgment we have been indebted for the selection of the highly efficient men who have composed the faculties whose work has givei lehigh the reputation for thorough training that has beem and is her chief and most valued asset dr drinker referred to the loy al part lehigh has always player in her duty to the country anc the government he empha sized the support which the university has given to military preparedness and the r o t c movement reading a letter fron capt welty of camp devei 1 complimenting the work of the 3 lehigh students who attended that camp this summer list of men who hold positions as managers editors and class officers the following list of the men at the heads of the various college minutes of play and emerged as victors over the leban on valley eleven last saturday af ternoon by the score of 28-0 the day was no day for a football game and the spectators as well as the players soon realized it swelter ing under the oppressing heat shirt sleeves soon became in vogur and lasted throughout the contest several players found the heat toe much for them and retired from the game almost totally exhausted lingle the brown and white quar terback was forced to leave the game about the middle of the sec ond quarter but his place was well filled by buckley who engineered the team for the rest of the after noon several lebanon men were forced to leave the game and one of the homan brothers was noi able to come back into the game the lehigh team made a good showing and sanford whe substituted for gulick also played a very good game very often gulick and frain the ends downed a receiver of the punt in his tracks gulick and sanford made an appearance for the first game and the light material held in very good fashion the line held like a stone wall against every lebanon valley rush and the opponent were forced to punt very often the work all along the rest of the line was very good large holes were made for the backfield men tc get through but the opponents found few openings when they had the ball continued on page four the ban was lifted saturday night and the freshmen turned out in large numbers for their intro duction to the older men of the university the annual reception was a huge success and its purpose that oi giving new men and old ones ar opportunity to meet was wel achieved the little tags of i am ' who are you were effectively present a very sociable and entertaining evening was made possible by tlit y m c a committee the president of the senioi clasis bevan welcomed the in coming class and told of old col lege customs which the new class is expected to maintain and honor mr frey and dr emery made speeches giving friendly advice tc the freshmen out of the experi enced observation of older classe on entrance herman weber was gladly re ceived with his log of tricks a curious little thing he showed was a magical method of cashing a dol lar check with a few airy passe which developed a dollar bill thi trick was very cordially received and all fh frosh are trying it bosey reiter told the boys of the fight they would have and im bued the men with that spirit which he himself radiates so continuous iv — good sportsmanship and game ness the lehigh orchestra entertain ed with selections throughout the evening great credit is due the ladies of the faculty for the delicious re freshments served ice cream and cake was served ; the men fratern izing and getting acquainted bring ing a close to a successful even o ing board competition new rules set forth by inter fraternity council are criterion for this year's rushing the fraternities of lehigh have inaugurated their rushing season this year by following an entirely different program than in years past after the example of many of the larger universities a regu lated system of rushing is being conducted in accordance with a set of rules expounded by the inter fraternity council of which each fraternity now at lehigh is a m ember the following are the rushing rules as adopted at the last meet ing of the council in the 1919-20 school year : : the object of thus controlling the rushing of freshmen is ob viously the advantages which are mutually gained by permitting n new man to come in touch with several fraternity groups and con versely by giving every fraternity an equal chance to bid a new man i—no1 — no man shall be bid to any fraternity at lehigh from the end of the preceding college year until 6 p m three weeks after college opens and providing that the man be registered in college before he is bid 2 — men will be allowed to live in fraternity houses during the three veeks period of rushing 3 — a bulletin board will be plac ed in drown hall upon which th names of all new men living in fra ternity houses must be posted for five days before they may be bid and the men's names must be post ed by the fraternity within twenty four hours after he enters the house 4 — there shall be no rushing oi freshmen outside of fraternity houses after 8 p m until the close of the rushing season a petition will be sent to the arcadia to the effect that freshmen may not be allowed on the streets after 8 p m during the rushing season 5 — a copy of the rules adopted by the council will be placed in the freshman bible and any other de sirable publicity will be given them also an officer of the council will speak to the freshmen at the be ginming of the college year ex plaining the rules to them the above rules are not perman ent but represent a working basis upon which to build a more thoro and exacting system as time passe and the fraternities become more or less accustomed to the limitation . c which prevent lead-piping a freshman frosh elect president candidates for positions on the business board of the brown and white were asked to report last thursday however there still is an opportunity for several men to get into the competition two men will be chosen from the present sophomore class who will be rated as assistant business managers until their senior year when they become business manager and cir culation manager all men who wish to enter into tnis competition will see f israel circulation manager at the alpha chi rho house at once large r o t c enrollment the r o t c unit at lehigh has grown both in size and in popu larity during the short time that it has been a part of activities at le high the enrollment now in cludes over 600 men 400 of which are freshmen and to which the course is compulsory the unit b now made up of eight companie instead of the four of last year assisting major john w lang head of the department of mili tary science and tactics are capt charles shamotulski and lieut jesse a graham both of the united states army when lehigh opened this year's football season with a victory over lebanon valley last saturday the gave promise of a very successfu season over 70 men answerec coach keady's call for footbal material at the beginning of the season and since then they have working hard until two goo teams have been built up many old men are back anc ready for work while almost a many new men are showing up well and can expect a good berth on the squad among the old men capt buzz herrington is back on the job and as was demonstrat ed in last saturday's game wil show up better than ever this year among the other old men an douglas . t arkin , hmzelman good frain mccarthy goldman ma ginnes m wilson gulick cusiek savaria dieffenbach swinton huffman stanier 111 city at which walter camp explained the new change in the football rules the punt out after a touchdown has been elimin ated and all kicks for goals from touchdown will be made directly in front of the goal posts clipping a player is classed as unnecessary roughness this should give more protection to the forward passer the following men from the sophomore class have answered manager hinchman's call for can didates for asst manager of football sprague gibon grundy schaefer todd haldeman pass more wright and humphrey the following is the schedule a arranged for the 1920 season — 2 — west virginia univep sity oct 9 — rutgers oct 1(5 — university of roches ter oot 23 washington & jeffer son oct 30 — carnegie tech jt nov 6 — muhlenberg nov 13 pen-n state nov 20 lafayette away glee club notice excellent gym program outlined for year with the opening of college the physical education department under prof bosey reiter k preparing for a new year al ready half of the first year men have been given their physical ex amination and the rest will be ex amined before the week is over all new men must take this exam ination in order to get credit for their term's work in physical edu cation and if any one has been un ible to take it at the assigned time he should consult prof reiter at once this year the physical educa tion department is going to try a new system every man in col lege moist sigm up in the office in the gymnasium indicating which form of athletic work he expects tc take up this also includes men who have been excused from any any form of gym work all work is to be marked on attendance the interest shown by the men in their work and on their efficiency in the sport for which they are trying out as in previous years all men must turn in cards at the end of the week men who are trying out for the position of assistant managers continued on page three the first meeting of the fresh man class was held on last satur day sept 25 at 12 oclock in the assembly room in packer hail president jacobs of the lir.iioi class took charge of the meeting and gave the new men a litti talk fi the customs conc^i-nin ihe i-'ounder's day sports liter which he advised a temporary organiza tion to take charge of the cl.i o ru.d t » organize the freshmen teams seven men were nominated for the presidency of the class of these seven t d huff was elect ed the - e was a fine turnout for tbi first meeting of hi cla-v ; "\ 24 there f>otrj enough present to nearly fill the ; embly room the first regular rehearsal of the glee club will be held next wednesday sept 29 at 7:30 p m in drown hall tryouts for nev men will be held on the following saturday oct 2 at 1 p m m drown hall rehearsals for th mandolin club will be announced later frosh class from many countries and states the class of 1924 while not coming up in numbers to the rec ord set by the sophomore class on entering represent as many if not more countries and states to be exact 12 foreign countries and 4c states are represented by the 407 freshmen specials and students with advanced standing this brings the total undergraduate body well over the thousand ark definite figures are not yet known tend shows the wide range and appeal of the courses present ed by lehjgh it was ' necessary to restrict the class of 24 to its present limits an many applicants were denied ad mission because of the decision of the trustees not to increase the size of the university the em bryo class of 25 is already well started more preliminary appli cations have been received than ever before and therefore all pre paratory school men intending tc enter lehigh next fall should send in their applications at once bethlehem pa t tuesday september 28 1920 who's who--what they do at lehigh brown and white frosh reception is huge success vol xxviii no 1 gridiron warriors win season opener new arcadia rule in order to facilitate the execution of the rules of the inter fraternity council the arcadia has ruled that all fresh men are forbidden to be upon the streets after 8 p m during the fraternity rushing season this rule automatically becomes a college custom to supersede the old 7 p m rule printed in the handbook the arcadia requests that all violations of the freshmen regulations be reported immediately the arcadia
