fraternities and this season will be the first to be affect ed by this ruling after some discussion the coun cil voted against a proposal to reg ulate the second semester rushing season the last word in the legal fracas between i m siegel lehigh soph omore and the city of bethlehem was said tuesday morning at the northampton county court house when judge robert a stotz smil ingly reversed the decision of al derman frank w kahler bethle hem made following the student arrests on the eve of the lafayette game last fall there is not a thing against this man but he should have been arrested for lehigh's not having a better football team said judge stotz as he made his decision he then ordered the court costs to be paid by the county and the 55 bail returned to siegel by the gity of bethlehem when called to the stand officer george hebble admitted he had seen siegel do nothing but that he had been ordered by superiors to arrest him after having been given the necessary information to take him into custody this testimony combined with that of lawrence delp a bus driver who had seen the arrest brought out clearly that the evidence available was insuffi cent for a conviction delp said that although he had seen the bus stop sign on siegel's car it was not sieg el who interferred with him when he tried to obtain the license num ber of the car judge stotz did not think it necessary to call on siegel and his witnesses who were in court ready to testify but made his decision immediately in favor of the defendant siegel made his appeal on the grounds that he had been fined without knowing the nature of the complaint against him and charged the arrest was illegal because of lack of evidence the latter com plaint was justified when the city failed to bring out a single fact which could be used to convict him the attorney for the defendant was hugh mcfadden bethlehem h w cushman enters metropolitant jr swim ming championships an exceptionally slow enrollment marked the usual activity and bus tle of registration last week in packer hall many students did not register until yesterday when re-enrollment closed and cards kept pouring in all this week although statistics are not yet ready it is evident that the number of men dropped from school this irear will be definitely less than in previous years this is of course due to the new rules which permit none but those on probation to flunk out however there has been a corresponding increase in the number of men placed on proba tion since all those who ordinarily would have been dropped are now on probation although the new rules are now in full effect those men who were dropped last semester will be per mitted to return next september in accordance with the old regulations meanwhile their places are being taken by a large number of return ing men who were forced to leave previously the enrollment will be but little augmented by new fresh men since only a small number were admitted this semester as a result of flunk-outs and transfers several rooms are now va cant in price and taylor halls which can be obtained by applying to the bursar immediately actual statistics regarding regis tration cannot be obtained for sev eral weeks because the dean's office is still overloaded with the work of registration the bursar too will be unable to give accurate fig ures concerning the payment of tu ition for several weeks debaters arrange dates of contests musical societies prepare for trip washington's birthday for the third time will mean more to le high undergraduates and alumni than the mere natal anniversary of the father of our country for the day has been set aside as the an nual homecoming of alumni the day this year will take on special interest over that of other years in that the cornerstone of the new library made possible through the gifts of alumni will be laid that afternoon the names of the speak ers for this event will be announced later except for laying the cornerstone of the library the day will be much as other homecomings with visits to classes and the usual athletic at traction in the afternoon or evening this year a wrestling meet with col umbia after luncheon at the cafeteria in drown hall the movie campus pictures will be shown for the first time the annual public speaking con test will be held at 11 a m in the chapel a general invitation has been extended through the alumni bulletin to all alumni no 11 o'clock classes will meet so that students may attend the contests the six contestants will be divid ed into two groups three engin eers will make up one of these while the other will consist of business and arts men a first second and third prize will be given to each group these prizes offered by the alumni are 25 15 and 10 respec tively the three judges although not chosen will probably be alum ni all men who are interested should see prof m j luch imme diately the deadline for handing in drafts of speaches has been set for noon saturday february 16 to date only a few engineers have entered the contest prof luch desires to have anyone interested to call on him at his office in christmas-sau con hall this week or early next week competing in its second meet within five days the wrestling team defeated cornell 15-12 thursday the outcome of the meet was not decided until the final bout in which miller gained a • fall over dow of cornell to give lehigh the six points necessary for victory cornell boasting wto intercolle giate champions in its lineup josef son in the 115 pound class and cap tain stafford in the heavyweight class has a strong team and one which it was known would furnish a hard test for the brown and white grapplers particularly as but four days intervened since the hard meet with the naval academy last year the red and white wrestlers were the only aggregation able to out grapple billy sheridan's charges in a dual meet and they were downed a short time later in the intercollegiates avenging the ear lier defeat as everything hinged on its out come the outstanding bout was the last one on the program the heavy weight cornell had gained a three point advantage at the close of the 175 pound bout and the only chance for lehigh to win the meet was for miller to gain a fall a feat which he accomplished admir ably pinning dow's shoulders to the mat after nine minutes and 30 seconds of wrestling miller did not wrestle before the recent mid year examinations and has had but little opportunity since then to prac tice so that his winning of two bouts within such a short space of time is especially creditable stafford captain of the ithacans again proved his worth and versa tility by defeating captain lehr in the 175 pound class with a time ad vantage of six minutes and four seconds last year in the dual meet he accomplished this same feat and then in the intercollegiates moved up to the heavyweight division antf defeated miller in the finals to gain that title josef son 115 pounds cornell's other champion defeated phillips on a decision with a time advantage of eight minutes continued on page 4 all the bouts were remarkably closely contested three of the sev en going to extra periods and but two resulting in falls the ithacans showed extreme caution in their grappling taking few chances and preferring to be content with a de cision rather than possibly lose any advantage previously gained 115-lb josef son cornell defeated phillips lehigh with time advan tage of 8 minutes the summary hellenic society sponsors essays case will lecture on hudson bridge the city failed to bring out a single fact which could be used to convict him the attorney for the defendant was hugh mcfadden bethlehem h w cushman enters metropolitant jr swim ming championships an exceptionally slow enrollment marked the usual activity and bus tle of registration last week in packer hall many students did not register until yesterday when re-enrollment closed and cards kept pouring in all this week although statistics are not yet ready it is evident that the number of men dropped from school this irear will be definitely less than in previous years this is of course due to the new rules which permit none but those on probation to flunk out however there has been a corresponding increase in the number of men placed on proba tion since all those who ordinarily would have been dropped are now on probation although the new rules are now in full effect those men who were dropped last semester will be per mitted to return next september in accordance with the old regulations meanwhile their places are being taken by a large number of return ing men who were forced to leave previously the enrollment will be but little augmented by new fresh men since only a small number were admitted this semester as a result of flunk-outs and transfers several rooms are now va cant in price and taylor halls which can be obtained by applying to the bursar immediately actual statistics regarding regis tration cannot be obtained for sev eral weeks because the dean's office is still overloaded with the work of registration the bursar too will be unable to give accurate fig ures concerning the payment of tu ition for several weeks debaters arrange dates of contests musical societies prepare for trip washington's birthday for the third time will mean more to le high undergraduates and alumni than the mere natal anniversary of the father of our country for the day has been set aside as the an nual homecoming of alumni the day this year will take on special interest over that of other years in that the cornerstone of the new library made possible through the gifts of alumni will be laid that afternoon the names of the speak ers for this event will be announced later except for laying the cornerstone of the library the day will be much as other homecomings with visits to classes and the usual athletic at traction in the afternoon or evening this in christmas-sau con hall this week or early next week competing in its second meet within five days the wrestling team defeated cornell 15-12 thursday the outcome of the meet was not decided until the final bout in which miller gained a • fall over dow of cornell to give lehigh the six points necessary for victory cornell boasting wto intercolle giate champions in its lineup josef son in the 115 pound class and cap tain stafford in the heavyweight class has a strong team and one which it was known would furnish a hard test for the brown and white grapplers particularly as but four days intervened since the hard meet with the naval academy last year the red and white wrestlers were the only aggregation able to out grapple billy sheridan's charges in a dual meet and they were downed a short time later in the intercollegiates avenging the ear lier defeat as everything hinged on its out come the outstanding bout was the last one on the program the heavy weight cornell had gained a three point advantage at the close of the 175 pound bout and the only chance for lehigh to win the meet was for miller to gain a fall a feat which he accomplished admir ably pinning dow's shoulders to the mat after nine minutes and 30 seconds of wrestling miller did not wrestle before the recent mid year examinations and has had but little opportunity since then to prac tice so that his winning of two bouts within such a short space of time is especially creditable stafford captain of the ithacans again proved his worth and versa tility by defeating captain lehr in the 175 pound class with a time ad vantage of six minutes and four seconds last year in the dual meet he accomplished this same feat and then in the intercollegiates moved up to the heavyweight division antf defeated miller in the finals to gain that title josef son 115 pounds cornell's other champion defeated phillips on a decision with a time advantage of eight minutes continued on page 4 all the bouts were remarkably closely contested three of the sev en going to extra periods and but two resulting in falls the ithacans showed extreme caution in their grappling taking few chances and preferring to be content with a de cision rather than possibly lose any advantage previously gained 115-lb josef son cornell defeated phillips lehigh with time advan tage of 8 minutes the summary hellenic society sponsors essays
