was the result of a plan devised by the officials of the system to cut down their operating costs by doing away with miles of snowsheds on the route over the mountains and going straight thru instead of over the mountains in driving the tunnel nearly 1,000,000 cubic yards of rock were blasted out and removed and 250,000 cubic yards of concrete were poured diagrams used in the film show how the homecoming although man has been living on the earth approximately 500,000 years continually using some of its mineral products within the past 25 years we have exhausted more of our minerals than were consum ed in all previous time according to professor b l miller head of the geology department in a speech before the bethlehem rotary flub at their meeting wednesday noon in the hotel bethlehem dr miller gave an illuminating talk on geology discussing its value in reading the history of the earth the origin and evolution of life and its practical application to the discovery and exploitation of the mineral products on which mod ern industrial civilization is based although the efficiency of the present day geologist is highly praised he will probably be blamed and perhaps rightly for the scar city of these useful mineral prod ucts said dr miller he went on to sound a warning that there is not an oil district or a copper lead zinc silver or gold region known that gives promise of hav ing enough resources to last a hun dred years although new ones will be found there is a limit to the number and it is probable that the decline in production before many years will become noticeable we can only speculate as to what effect this will have upon the civilization a few hundrad years hence in the location of economic sup plies of oil gas ores and under ground waters the geologist has has been fought and won un der the leadership of mayor james yeakle the city of bethlehem has won a signal victory over the forces of the bethlehem transit co the war has been a long and ar duous one but the enemy has sur rendered completely not a single trolley track remains to make driv ing on brodhead avenue and sum mit street a matter of taking one's life in one's hands the trouble started a long time ago when the trolley company built its tracks above the specified grad ings on part of brodhead avenue running south of packer avenue and part of summit street the city protested and in 1921 ordered the transit co to repair its right of-way but it was too busy run ning its cars over the tracks to no tice this demand in 1925 and again in 1927 the city fathers is sued similar orders to the company but again the order was not obeyed finally when motorists com plained that their cars refused to take wings and fly over the chin ese wall in the middle of the street the city officials became really peeved and assembled in a council of war to decide further action on monday december 10 they issued the famous manifesto to the enemy demanding complete surrender the repair of the tracks by the 29th of the same month threatening to re move the tracks if the work was not done in time the trolley com pany retaliated with the assertion that the city had built its street too low for the tracks and demanded that the streets be raised as the appointed time drew near er and neither side attempted to take action dire results were for seen in the conflict speculation ran rife as to whether the city would take the hill some thought the mayor and his cohorts were merely bluffing and would take no action but the mayor is not a man to bluff before sunrise he had mar shalled his forces for the battle placing himself at the head he be gan the advance upon the enemy behind him paraded nine stalwart policemen pledged to fight to the last in rear of the column were the trucks of the city bearing work me neager to attack the iron rails majestically the cavalcade strode up the hill ' evidently the enemy had made a hasty retreat or had feared to attempt to defend their stronghold quickly taking pos session of the field the city's forces proceeded io tear up the tracks which had caused so much dispute policemen were dispatched to watch for the offense while the workmen labored with picks and shovels in the midst of the work the cries that the enemy was approach ing arose as the company's trol ley car rumbled down the hill the car advanced unhesitatingly while the defense prepared to withstand the attack before the car could reach the enemy it stopped unable to proceed where its tracks were rooted out a battle seemed em inent but without tracks the car was powerless and it gracefully withdrew in celebration of its complete vic tory the city promised to repave where the tracks were when warm weather returns meanwhile mo torists crossing brodhead avenue can do so without fear of dislocat ing their necks meanwhile the transit co can run its trolleys only as far as the end of summit avenue the efficiency of the chance sand flotation machine for the prepara tion of coal in the cox laboratory has been greatly increased by the addition of a new centrifugal pump and a more powerful motor accord ing to professor howard eckfeldt head of the mining were consum ed in all previous time according to professor b l miller head of the geology department in a speech before the bethlehem rotary flub at their meeting wednesday noon in the hotel bethlehem dr miller gave an illuminating talk on geology discussing its value in reading the history of the earth the origin and evolution of life and its practical application to the discovery and exploitation of the mineral products on which mod ern industrial civilization is based although the efficiency of the present day geologist is highly praised he will probably be blamed and perhaps rightly for the scar city of these useful mineral prod ucts said dr miller he went on to sound a warning that there is not an oil district or a copper lead zinc silver or gold region known that gives promise of hav ing enough resources to last a hun dred years although new ones will be found there is a limit to the number and it is probable that the decline in production before many years will become noticeable we can only speculate as to what effect this will have upon the civilization a few hundrad years hence in the location of economic sup plies of oil gas ores and under ground waters the geologist has but the enemy has sur rendered completely not a single trolley track remains to make driv ing on brodhead avenue and sum mit street a matter of taking one's life in one's hands the trouble started a long time ago when the trolley company built its tracks above the specified grad ings on part of brodhead avenue running south of packer avenue and part of summit street the city protested and in 1921 ordered the transit co to repair its right of-way but it was too busy run ning its cars over the tracks to no tice this demand in 1925 and again in 1927 the city fathers is sued similar orders to the company but again the order was not obeyed finally when motorists com plained that their cars refused to take wings and fly over the chin ese wall in the middle of the street the city officials became really peeved and assembled in a council of war to decide further action on monday december 10 they issued the famous manifesto to the enemy demanding complete surrender the repair of the tracks by the 29th of the same month threatening to re move the tracks if the work was not done in time the trolley com pany retaliated with the assertion that the city had built its street too low for the tracks and demanded that the streets be raised as the appointed time drew near er and neither side attempted to take action dire results were for seen in the conflict speculation ran rife as to whether the city would take the hill some thought the mayor and his cohorts were merely bluffing and would take no action but the mayor is not a man to bluff before sunrise he had mar shalled his stronghold quickly taking pos session of the field the city's forces proceeded io tear up the tracks which had caused so much dispute policemen were dispatched to watch for the offense while the workmen labored with picks and shovels in the midst of the work the cries that the enemy was approach ing arose as the company's trol ley car rumbled down the hill the car advanced unhesitatingly while the defense prepared to withstand the attack before the car could reach the enemy it stopped unable to proceed where its tracks were rooted out a battle seemed em inent but without tracks the car was powerless and it gracefully withdrew in celebration of its complete vic tory the city promised to repave where the tracks were when warm weather returns meanwhile mo torists crossing brodhead
