little known to the present generation of lehigh men but comes from syracuse for the oc casion with a reputation as a pep speaker of more than usual merit it goes without saying that the band will keep things more than a little enlivened with its presence both in the gym and while parad ing through town l u publications receive approval accounts of burr b & w epitome and re view are accepted the scarlet jerseyed rutgers eleven invaded taylor stadium last saturday to defeat their ancient brown and white rivals by a small 7-3 margin when chase rutgers left end snatched up a loose ball and ran 99 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter although the hard tackling of the l#high line which featured the early games of the season was lacking the backfield showed a great deal of improvement the tackling of van blarcom and el liott the alertness of the whole backfield at intercepting pssses and the hard running of elliott fritts and trantum stopped many an on rush of the scarlet team which might otherwise have proved disas trous the eventful first quarter was marked by many breaks for both teams lehigh kicked off and aft er an exchange of punts rutgers started an attack which brought them to the brown and white 47 yard line before they were halted elliott punted after several unsuc cessful attempts at hitting the line rosen fumbled and twigger fell on the ball after several more at tempts at hitting the line for small gains davidowitz toed a placement kick between the bars for lehigh's only score score on fumble lehigh again kicked off green failed to gain through center and rutgers punted on second down davidowitz ran the ball back to the opponents 40-yard line and then a beautiful pass from davidowitz to elliott placed the ball on the five yard line fritts made a yard around left end elliott added three more off left tackle on the third play the ball was passed back into space where a surprised rutgers end scooped it up and was half way down the iicld before anyone realized what had happened with a cast and chorus of 50 to 75 men and a longer road trip in prospect than ever before the spring show of the mustard and cheese club will be produced on a much larger scale than any pre vious production of the club all designing of costumes and scenery will be entirely under the care of club members the monday fol lowing easter has been set for the start of the road trip which will include new york philadelphia pittsburgh cleveland buffalo reading and york pa the production committee is now engaged in working out the plot and continuity of the story and will shortly begin upon the dia logue music is under the super vision of g f mottor milam to coach wallis milam formerly stage di rector of george white's scandals and the greenwich village follies and director of the mustard and cheese show two years ago has again been engaged to pilot the dra matists through their production mr milam belongs to the direc tor's service guild of new york city and is an honorary member of mustard and cheese unique programs are being plan ned with several views of college life at lehigh to stimulate outside interest advertiesments from mer chants in cities on the prospective route will be solicited for presenta tion in the programs all sophomores wishing to com pete for the business staff should report thursday evening at 7:30 in drown hall and men interested in writing music for the show should notify george mottor at the delta upsilon house electricians prop erty men assistant stage managers and other helpers will be called for when needed cast tryouts will be held immediately after mid-terms the first issue of the lehigh re view will appear by the end of the week it will contain a reprint of part of dean c m mcconn's col lege or kindergarten an article tracing lehigh's football past by john m blackmar and two short stories by lehigh students the cover will no longer have the titles of the leading articles printed upon it but will be of green stock decorated with a black border and carrying only the usual title and monogram novel headings for the various departments are the work of the new art department and j leland myer art editor has drawn a full page pen and ink sketch with somewhat modernistic effect the editorial science book and play departments will be con ducted as usual subscriptions may be given large plants in philadelphia this president c r richards pro fessors f v larkin m c stuart and s s seyfert attended the of ficial dedication of the new 500,000 princeton engineering building last week more than 200 engineers and scientists including representa tives frbm 38 technical and engin eering universities were present charles z klauder the architect presented the key of the building to president john grier hibben who later spoke of the development of engineering at princeton and the future possibilities as a result of the new building and its equip ment dean arthur m greene jr de scribing the engineering curricula said that scientific subjects formed nearly half of the courses required and engineering about a third cul tural subjects filled the rest of the prescribed curriculum at princeton inn following the dedication carlton s proctor of new york city president of the princeton engineering association described the activities of the alum ni association mentioning science and engineer ing dean augustus trowbridge head of princeton graduate col lege said i see that more and more the engineers and scientifically trained nien will direct the great social ac tivities of government and the large industrial corporations dean trowbridge considers mass production as the greatest achieve ment of the american engineer in so far as it has affected the living conditions of the majority of our population dexter s kimball dean of the engineering school at cornell uni versity made the final address of the meeting on the relations of the engineering school to indus try the new rules governing scho lastic probation adopted by the faculty at its september session and which appeared in the first issue of the brown and white this fall are again printed below for the benefit of those men who have re ceived some of the 900 valen tines mailed by the dean yester day the new rules under the new rules students will not be placed on probation as easily as before but failure to meet the terms of probation will be far more severe no students now in good standing will be dropped in february 1929 except first semes ter freshmen who pass fewer than six hours any students dropped from the university in june 1929 except first semester freshmen will be dropped permanently 1 a first semester freshman who passes fewer than 5 hours shall be dropped from the university in such a case the student may be readmitted on probation after the lapse of one semester provided he passes entrance examinations as follows for arts and science or business administration english 3 units algebra 1 1-2 units plane geometry 1 unit and latin ger man french or spanish 2 units for engineering english 3 units algebra 1 1-2 units plane geometry 1 unit solid geometry 1-2 unit and plane trigonometry 1-2 unit 2 a first semester freshman who passes 6 hours but fewer than 11 hours shall be put on probation 3 any student other than a first semester freshman who passes few er than 12 hours shall be put on probation 4 any student placed on proba tion shall be dropped permanently if he fails four hours made up of two or more courses 5 rule no 4 is not applied au tomatically to students who have the classification of seniors the cases of seniors will be considered individually by the committee on probation on standing of students 6 any student who is put on probation a second time shall re main on probation throughout the remainder of his course industrials hold initial meeting burr board plans for dutch issue the accounts of the brown and white burr epitome and review for september and october were audited and approved at the meet ing of the board of publications friday in the commitee room of the alumni memorial hall according to dean mcconn chairman of the committee the gen eral condition of these publications is good and no criticism can be made either as to their editorial pol icies or their financial management the board of publications func tions as an advisory committee to the business and editorial heads of the five student publications it is composed of dean c m mcconn professors e h riley and d s chamberlin and going smoothly suggestions were received and plans were made for the next issue of the lehigh burr at the board meeting wednesday evening it was suggested that there be a penn sylvania dutch number written en tirely in pennsylvania dutch-eng lish the question of having a what the well dressed man will wear and a movie review column were also discussed no definite action was taken additional board members will be elected in a few weeks and their names announced in the january issue board meetings are now be ing held every other wednesday evening in the burr room in drown hall classical society holds discussion amendments to the rules govern ing comprehensive examinations for sophomore engineers were made at a meeting of the council of the college of engineering wednes day november 14 in the commit tee room of the alumni memorial hall the rules were amended so as to specify more accurately when a man might be fitted to take the examinations the system of holding compre hensive examinations was adopted last year and in june all men who had completed their second year's work in an engineering course at lehigh were required to take them although many men had not passed the courses in which they were be ing examined in the future how ever no students will be allowed to take the examinations unless they have passed three semesters of mathematics three semesters of physics and two semesters of chem istry and engineering drawing the amendments as adopted fol low 1 no student shall be entitled to promotion to the junior year in the college of engineering i c to reg ister for technical subjects given in the junior year in his curriculum until he has taken and passed the comprehensive examinations 2 no student shall be admitted to the comprehensive examinations unless he has passed the following courses * math 2 3 and 4 physics 1 la 2 3 4 and 5 chem 1 11 20 and 8 c e 1 and 2 for classes after the present sophomores physics 1 math 20 physics 4 and 5 \ next june all eligible men will be required to take the comprehensive examinations in mathematics phy sics chemistry and drawing after having taken the examinations three avenues are open to the students 1 they may continues the cur riculum elected provided a that they have acquired the necessary scholastic record b that they passed the required comprehensive examinations c that they have exhibited the necessary aptitude for the work of their choice 2 they may transfer to other curricula in engineering to the college of arts and science or to the college of business adminis tration provided a that they have cial legal accounting and operat ing phases of a business mr gano taught management classes at the university of cincin nati and then became head of the mechanical engineering department at the university of idaho he is now employed by the emerson en gineers and is acting as temporary manager of the trenton folding box company in an attempt to place that company on a sound footing the senior chemical engineers are spending the first three days of this week inspecting industrial plants in philadelphia professors d s chamberlain a diefenderfer c w simmons e r theis and dr h m ullman are in charge of the trip the party is using the benjamin franklin hotel as head quarters the trip itinerary includes inspec tion of five plants monday the seniors visited the kimbal glass co in vineland n j manufactur ers of chemical glass ware this inspection consumed the full day tuesday morning they inspected the refineries of the franklin sugar refining co where they saw the purification of raw sugar into gran ulated sugar powdered sugar and syrups in the afternoon the party continued its tour to the atlantic refining co manufacturers and re finers and petroleum products on the final day of the inspection trip the first stop will be the harrison plant of the dupont de nemours co where heavy acids alums paint pigments etc are manufactured the last plant the chemical engin eers visit will be that of the cer tain-teed products co where the seniors will view the manufacture of varnishes linoleums oil cloths and wall covering rutgers fans rush lehigh goal posts more than 900 students received mid - semester reports yesterday which informed them of the sub jects in which they were below passing dean curtis valentine team of 28 honor students worked five hours sunday to record the grades parents department heads and living group heads were also notified of the studants deficien of the 918 valentines delivered 444 were received by fraternity men 109 by dormitory men and 368 by men not affiliated with any living group although price hay holds the scholarship cup award ed by the university to that living group which attained the highest scholarship record 2.43 last year more valentines were sent there than to any other non-fraternity living group the phi delta theta fraternity which holds the phi sigma kappa scholarship cup awarded annually to that fraternity having the highest scholarship rec ord in the interfraternity confer ence was honored with 15 valen tines the largest number of valentines sent to any living group went to the phi sigma kap pa fraternity which received 27 engineers received most nearly two-thirds of the number of men in school received warnings some men were reported low in seven subjects and many had three or four subjects on their list the american cable co at dunellen and newark the par ty stayed at the hotel pennsylva nia last night this morning they visited the new york stock exchange the federal reserve bank and the sewage years tome is a national col lege preparatory school for boys and is located on the susquehanna river it has an enrollment of 200 and sends men to lehigh every year m mathematics society elects two new men after the final whistle at the rut gers game saturday afternoon about 50 rutgers enthusiasts rushed onto the field and launched an attack on the goal posts at the east end of the stadium in winning the match company f team compiled 2996 points out of a possible 4000 this record is exceptionally high for company rifle teams and exceed ed that of the ordnance team by over 100 points attack which brought them to the brown and white 47 yard line before they were halted elliott punted after several unsuc cessful attempts at hitting the line rosen fumbled and twigger fell on the ball after several more at tempts at hitting the line for small gains davidowitz toed a placement kick between the bars for lehigh's only score score on fumble lehigh again kicked off green failed to gain through center and rutgers punted on second down davidowitz ran the ball back to the opponents 40-yard line and then a beautiful pass from davidowitz to elliott placed the ball on the five yard line fritts made a yard around left end elliott added three more off left tackle on the third play the ball was passed back into space where a surprised rutgers end scooped it up and was half way down the iicld before anyone realized what had happened with a cast and chorus of 50 to 75 men and a longer road trip in prospect than ever before the spring show of the mustard and cheese club will be produced on a much larger scale than any pre vious production of the club all designing of costumes and scenery will be entirely under the care of club members the monday fol lowing easter has been set for the start of the road trip which will include new york philadelphia pittsburgh cleveland buffalo reading and york pa the production committee is now engaged in working out the plot and large plants in philadelphia this president c r richards pro fessors f v larkin m c stuart and s s seyfert attended the of ficial dedication of the new 500,000 princeton engineering building last week more than 200 engineers and scientists including representa tives frbm 38 technical and engin eering universities were present charles z klauder the architect presented the key of the building to president john grier hibben who later spoke of the development of engineering at princeton and the future possibilities as a result of the new building and its equip ment dean arthur m greene jr de scribing the engineering curricula said that scientific subjects formed nearly half of the courses required and engineering about a third cul tural subjects filled the rest of the prescribed curriculum at princeton inn following the dedication carlton s proctor of new york city president of the princeton engineering association described the activities of the alum ni association mentioning science and engineer ing dean augustus trowbridge head of princeton graduate col lege said i see that more and more the engineers and scientifically trained nien will direct the great school to indus try the new rules governing scho lastic probation adopted by the faculty at its september session and which appeared in the first issue of the brown and white this fall are again printed below for the benefit of those men who have re ceived some of the 900 valen tines mailed by the dean yester day the new rules under the new rules students will not be placed on probation as easily as before but failure to meet the terms of probation will be far more severe no students now in good standing will be dropped in february 1929 except first semes ter freshmen who pass fewer than six hours any students dropped from the university in june 1929 except first semester freshmen will be dropped permanently 1 a first semester freshman who passes fewer than 5 hours shall be dropped from the university in such a case the student may be readmitted on probation after the lapse of one semester provided he passes entrance examinations as follows for arts and science or business administration english 3 units algebra 1 1-2 units plane geometry 1 unit and latin ger man french or spanish 2 units for engineering english 3 units algebra 1 1-2 units plane geometry 1 unit solid geometry 1-2 unit and plane trigonometry 1-2 unit 2 a first semester freshman who passes 6 hours but fewer than 11 hours shall be put on probation 3 any student other than a first semester freshman who passes few er than 12 hours shall be put on probation 4 any student placed on proba tion shall be dropped permanently if he fails four hours made up of two or more courses 5 rule no 4 is not applied au tomatically to students who have the classification of seniors the cases of seniors will be considered individually by the committee on probation on standing of students 6 any student society holds discussion amendments to the rules govern ing comprehensive examinations for sophomore engineers were made at a meeting of the council of the college of engineering wednes day november 14 in the commit tee room of the alumni memorial hall the rules were amended so as to specify more accurately when a man might be fitted to take the examinations the system of holding compre hensive examinations was adopted last year and in june all men who had completed their second year's work in an engineering course at lehigh were required to take them although many men had not passed the courses in which they were be ing examined in the future how ever no students will be allowed to take the examinations unless they have passed three semesters of mathematics three semesters of physics and two semesters of chem istry and engineering drawing the amendments as adopted fol low 1 no student shall be entitled to promotion to the junior year in the college of engineering i c to reg ister for technical subjects given in the junior year in his curriculum until he has taken and passed the comprehensive examinations 2 no student shall be admitted to the comprehensive examinations unless he has passed the following courses * math 2 3 and 4 physics 1 la 2 3 4 and 5 chem 1 11 20 and 8 c e 1 and 2 for classes after the present sophomores physics 1 math 20 physics 4 and 5 \ next june all received mid - semester reports yesterday which informed them of the sub jects in which they were below passing dean curtis valentine team of 28 honor students worked five hours sunday to record the grades parents department heads and living group heads were also notified of the studants deficien of the 918 valentines delivered 444 were received by fraternity men 109 by dormitory men and 368 by men not affiliated with any living group although price hay holds the scholarship cup award ed by the university to that living group which attained the highest scholarship record 2.43 last year more valentines were sent there than to any other non-fraternity living group the phi delta theta fraternity which holds the phi sigma kappa scholarship cup awarded annually to that fraternity having the deposit md last week and addressed the stu dents at chapel sunday morning nov 18 he also held private conferences saturday evening this is the sixth time that dean mcconn has spoken at tome in four new men after the final whistle at the rut gers game saturday afternoon about 50 rutgers enthusiasts rushed onto the field and launched an attack on the goal posts at the east end of the stadium tearing them down part of the lehigh cheering section dashed onto the field and retreived the posts after a ten-minute fight two rutgers men and one lehigh man were knocked out one of the rutgers men taking five minutes to regain consciousness no arrests were made the lehigh band of 72 pieces created the first stir of the after noon when it entered taylor field in an l formation heralded by eight trumpeters and marched the length of the field dance after rutgers game well attended romanticism and classicism was the subject of an informal dis cussion at the eta sigma phi meeting friday evening in drown hall classicism is restrained ro manticism was the definition of classicism finally agreed upon homer's odessy and virgil's aen eid were assigned to the classic be cause the authors had made an ef fort to tone down and temper their subject matter it was also pointed out that classicism does not neces sarily mean copying the form of greek and latin authors but it does mean adhering to
