pi delta epsilon banquet includes all prominent men parades orations prayers ar mistice day ten years ago last sunday marked the ending of the most terrific and expensive con flict that the world has ever known armistice day in most places but just november 11 at lehigh uni versity and had it been any day but sunday — classes will be held as usual seemingly the only events that rate holidays around this institu tion are the day commemorating the time when asa packer came down the lehigh river saw the bethlehem steel works decided that this would be a good place to assemble the youth of the nation to be educated stopped off his raft and founded the university and the death of a trustee while there is a degree of regularity about founder's day there are only a few trustees and it would appear that they have a bulldog grip on the brown and white wishes to apologize for an error in a recent article which stated that pi delta epsilon was planning a banquet for football men the banquet being planned is a grid iron banquet customary among many honorary journalistic so cieties'of colleges and universi ties invitations are extended only to outstanding members of the student body and faculty and to a few town people who have shown a special interest in lehigh affairs if plans mater ialize the banquet probably will be held late in the spring it seems hard to believe that just ten short years ago the warring na tions turned their swords into plow shares so much has been accom plished in that relatively short time lindbergh flew across the at lantic to the east and the graf zep pelin flew across from the west general dawes put germany on its feet and the american army of oc cupation came home to make this country safe for trench-mouth the a e f under the direction of the american legion invaded france a second time and immediately fol lowing 15 nations including france signed a treaty outlawing war all since november 11 ten years ago time will go on and more epoch making things will be accomplish ed and next year armistice day will be monday november 11 but at lehigh university — classes will be held as usual freshman cabinet members elected m & c club to give spring show only valentines will be mailed monday fall performance dropped owing to lack of coach parents of students below grade will receive notices lehigh students who spend 1 four years in the university receive more than a thousand dollars from the endowment fund and other sources according to an analysis of instruc tion costs at lehigh made by natt m emery vice president and como troller the report shows that for the collegiate year 1927-1928 the aver age costs per individual student was 656.01 the costs for the pas five years have been 1923-1924 654.81 1924-1925 670.58 1925 1926 641.99 1926-1927 593.91 the comparatively low figures for 1926-1927 are owing to the increased enrollment that year reducing the overhead expenses per individual student expenditures made by the uni versity are from 200 to 250 in ex cess of the annual tuition of each student tuition fees average 400 a year per man this barely equals the salaries of professors and in structors administrative costs and the expense of taking care of the campus buildings and equipment are dependent upon the endowment and other sources students who missed more than a reasonable number of classes this semester have been notified by george b curtis associate dean and registrar to attend classes regular ly parents of the students who took these cuts were also notified there is no fixed number of cuts which a man must have be fore he will receive a notice from the dean , the rule is flexible and is applied to individual cases at the discretion of the dean but usually when a student has accumulated ten cuts he receives a warning and his parents ctre notified when a man misses so many classes that the dean finds it ne cessary to issue a second warning the student may be placed on cut probation this means that if a student takes more than a limited number of cuts decided by the dean he will automatically be dropped from school however according to dean mcconn it is necessary to apply this rule only in the cases of chronic cutters if a student is absent from class the instructor is required to record a grade of e for that students if a man misses an unannounced quiz he receives a grade of e but if he misses a regularly announced quiz he is given an f and is not entitled to another quiz unless he presents an excuse from the dean's office seniors inspect conowingo plant bidwell attends optical meeting election of a delegate to the na tional undergraduate interfrater nity council meeting to be held in the hotel pennsylvania in new york on nov 30-dec 1 was the main item of business to be brought before the interfraternity council at its meeting in drown hall last night richard b johnston was elected to represent the council at this meeting at which deferred rushing and initiation cooperative buying pledges living in chapter houses scholarship rough house initiations power of interfraternity councils and activities of intefra ternity councils will be discussed a petition for admission to the council was received from phi sig ma delta and was laid on the table until the next meeting heads of the committees on the various in ter-fraternity sports announced that all matches must be played off when scheduled or be forfeited the president requested that all the houses get behind the red cross drive and help to put it over the top the dean's opinion of the last house party season was quite satis factory he said that although the senior ball was much dryer than the junior prom last spring there were several rather wet spots at the house dances saturday night par ticularly the larger dances where there were four houses in combina tion at present the dean is work ing on a plan whereby petitions for one or two house open or closed dances and for three house closed dances only will be granted there will be no permission given for four house combinations final results of the freshman cab inet elections were announced last monday by charles halsted class president the elections which were held tuesday nov 6 were some what delayed because the arcadia considered renominations advisable after a recount had been taken to ascertain the results the following man had the highest number of votes six of the men are from fraterni ties one from the dormitories and two are town men russell burk george h riley s w bijou charles jones edward ace elmer schuyler martin gabel henry p boggs frank l fisher shooting finals held this week austin to speak on ores at metallurgical meeting mid-term reports affectionately known as valentines will be mail ed earlier this year than ever before instructors must turn their reports in to george b curtis associate dean and registrar before wednes day nov 14 the valentine team will record the grades on sunday nov 18 so that the reports may be mailed the following day students whose grades are above passing will not receive a report at this time but all men who have a grade of e or f in any subject will receive a warning from dean curtis the parents will also be notified of the students defiicien rip.s , ' dean curtis has recruited 28 hon or men from the sophomore and junior classes to assist him in re cording grades next sunday the system of employing honor men only for this work was adopted by dean curtis at registration this year and has been very satisfac tory although the team was new the work was done more thorough ly and with fewer mistakes than ev er before dr charles c bidwell head of the physics department professor paul l bayley and messrs john c clark otto f ritzman and hal ton h friend attended the fourth annual meeting of the optical so ciety at washington november 1-3 the ether drift of the earth was the most important topic of the meeting dr c c miller of the case school of applied science presented the results of successful experiments which he has undertak en on this subject definitely prov ing that there is an ether drift to the earth dr a a mickelson noted physicist of johns hopkins university also has this opinion but as yet has not completed any experiments to prove it dr luch speaks on armistice day rifle teams of company f and the ordinance group will meet this week in the finals of the company shooting matches last week com pany f entered the finals by de feating companies c e and g previously the ordance had defeat eq companies a and b each company has a team of 15 men who shoot in all four posi tions prone sitting kneeling and standing the highest ten scores of each company are counted several of the teams didn ot have ten men shooting so they were consider ably handicapped bidwell's car and ford collide at campus gate albert m austin patent counsel for the american smelting and re fininfi company will address the lehigh metallurgical society at the first meeting of the year on the sintering of ores at 7:30 p m wednesday nov 14 in the chem ical building preceding the talk there will be a dinner at the phi delta theta house at which dr c r rich ards professors stoughton butts and doan of the metallurgical en gineering department instructors the senior metallurgists profes sors from other departments and several officials of the bethlehem steel company will be present debators hold informal meet meeting of math club the development of man from his birth one million years ago somewhere in western central asia through four glacial periods to a civilized being of the iron age was traced by dr neil carothers before an audience of 200 students and fac ulty members last night in drown hall the evidence supporting the theory of evolution is overwhelm ing declared dr carothers the sequence was probably protozoa boneless sea-creature vertebrate fish amphibian and mammal thence developing from a furry tree dweller to a larger and slightly more intelligent creature the pro anthropoid the speaker then de scribed in detail the characteristics of the eolith the pithecanthropus erectus the heidelberg man the piltdown man the neanderthal man the cromagnon man and the neolithic man two common vestiges of primi tive man remain with us today one the ability to wiggle our ears and the other moles believed to be rep resentative of the type of skin that covered prehistoric man but the fact that we know so little yet are every day learning the whole story bit by bit is what makes the study of primitive man so romantically in teresting it has been said what we hit is history what we miss mystery the story of the evolu tion of man is like a play upon which at intervals the curtain de scends while the performance con tinues now visible now concealed neolithic man was the practical go-getter type he built the first huts and began the domestication of animals developed agriculture pot tery making weaving and the fer mentation of grains for beverage purposes to him also is due the worlds greatest invention the wheel barter and trade sprang up a lan guage and with crude writing ownership and property rights be gan to be recognized and finally a monarchic type of government was evolvpd the greatest personal character istic of primitive man said dr carothers was his patience it stood between him and extinction the whole story of man's develop ment is a demonstration of the law of social progress that acquisition of knowledge is a slow process of ad dition but there is a corollary law that the rate of social progress moves with an acceleration the world has progressed more since the days of washington than in all the time before i see an even better life in the future hammond talks to educational club with a long face and defensive attitude a member of the produc tion committee of the mustard and cheese club made it public that there will be no fall show given by the club this year owing to the lack of a coach since the club will not give a fall production the committee is now concentrating all its efforts on the spring show plans have been made to secure wallis milam the ned wayburn coach who so materially aided the last spring show in its success of two years ago as coach of the production this year mr milam has long been asso ciated with ned wayburn's produc tions and before coming to lehigh two years ago was coach of a so ciety show in florida in which the chorus and cast vv ere worth 50,000,000 tom brennan and n h adams members of the production commit tee are beginning the scenario this week so that the show may get off to an early start the business com petition is also starting this week with the contestants beginning work on the program contracts have been sent to the alumni for the out of town shows and the hard work of the business staff has already be gun the club will inaugurate its spring show this year with a trip beginning easter monday and con tinuing for the rest of the week re turning to bethlehem the following monday for its home how this will be the first musical com edy to be given by the club in two years last year this custom was dropped in favor of the production of three one-act plays coached by a member of the faculty thirty senior electricals accom panied by professors seifert beav er hibsham anderson maylott and andreas inspected the cono wingo hydro-electric plant of the philadelphia electric company system at conowingo maryland on sunday the party left bethlehem at 7:30 a m in automobiles and ar rived at the plant about 11:30 mr roger taylor father of roger tay lor jr who is a senior electrical was in charge of the plant and ed as host the students were treated to a chicken dinner in the new club house after which the regular in spection of the plant began the high tension sub-station machine shop turbine hall and water wheels were carefully examined the gen erators were not running yesterday because of low water but mr tay lor started one of the units before the group departed at the present time the conowingo plant is merely taking the peak loads while the steam plant at philadelphia takes the base load however in the spring of the year when the river is high conowingo takes the base load and the steam plant takes the peak loads supper was eaten at exton and the future steinmetzes arrived in bethlehem at 10 p m sunday the trip was the most popular ever taken and is expected to be an annual event for electri cal engineers while driving to college last fri day morning dr charles c bidwell met with an accident when his car collided with a campus ford at the adams street entrance dr bidwell was coming up adams street and the ford was coming east on packer avenue the left rear wheel of dr bidwell's car hit the left front wheel of the ford smashing it and bending the axle miners become operators of classifying machine library circulation continues to increase under the leadership of profes sor m j luch a group of stu dents interested in debating last night discussed the question re solved that censorship of the rep resentative arts literature and the drama including the movies should be abolished at a meeting held in christmas-saucon hall the purpose of the discussion was to famaliarize the candidates for the debating team with the open-mind ed style of oratory and debate which is to be followed in coming discussions and debates chem dept gets test apparatus the first program meeting of le high university mathematics club will be held wednesday november 14 at 7:30 p m in room 301 packer hall prof w m smith of lafayette college will speak in addition short talks will be given by j e illick 29 and a n rogers 30 the lehigh mathematics club was organized two years ago by a group of 40 men selected by the department of mathematics dr myron j luch was the prin cipal speaker at the armistice day services held last sunday by the harry f w johnson post of the american legion in the salem lu theran church in his address dr luch said that war is natural war destroys our constructive frame of mind he said therefore armistice day is a time when we should re vie wthe past with the idea of checkin gup on ourselves only in this manner can we reduce wars in concluding dr luch quoted the famous statement of lincoln's immortal gettysburg address — " — that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation un der god shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth student is held in accident in reviewing the investigation of engineering education conducted by the society for the promotion of engineering education before the faculty educational club yester day afternoon in the physics lec ture room dr harry p hammond declared that lehigh has gone far ther and been more constructive than any other university in follow ing out the suggestions of the s p e e dr hammond former lehigh in structor in civil engineering is pro fessor of civil engineering at brooklyn polytechnic institute a sassistant director of this so ciety dr hammond has made ex tensive studies in the methods of collegiate and non-collegiate techni cal institutions by means of lan tern slides and a lecture he pre sented the principal conditions re vealed by the society's research a great deal of the society's effort is directed toward the perfecting of engineering curricula and personell gano will address industrial society students in the mining engineer ing department recently operated for the first time a model of the dorr bowl classifier this model was bought for use in the coxe mining laboratory classification is the term applied to the separation of matter accord ing to the size or specific gravity of the parts in which it exists al though there are many ways of ac complishing this the dorr classi fier deals only with the wet pro cess or classification of solids mix ed with the liquids the dorr machine consists of an inclined trough in which is placed mechanically operated rakes upon these rakes is superimposed a shal low circular tank filled with water the material enters the bowl at the center a steady upward flow of water from the center of the bowl causes the fine solids to overflow into a collecting launder and the coarse oversize solids to settle to the bottom the coarse solids are then removed by the raking appar atus in the trough to the central dis charge opening in spite of the fact that normal use of the library is somewhat in terfered with owing to construc tion work the present circulation is larger than that of the same period last year since 1923-1924 there has been a yearly increase in the circul ation of between 4 and 5 thousand volumes and it is expected that this year will not p ye an exception howard s leach librarian states that the keeping of reserved books and periodicals in another building has prevented a number of students from seeing attractive new books which they might wish to read and which in other years they have seen when they came to the library while the monthly lists posted al low students to see what new books have been added to the library these lists are not as effective a stimulant as seeing the book itrelf mr leach also stated that there is no reason why the normal work connected with classes or gen chamberlih and research students interfered with in the least by the process of rebuilding the librarians are ready to help the students in any way possible red cross asks help gipson to make address at cosmos club dinner robert schenck jr 30 of chi cago 111 waived a hearing and en tered bail of 1000 for court before alderman f l kramlich of the west side he is charged by john fenstermacher of 406 first avenue with assault and battery by auto mobile mr fenstermacher ap peared to press the charge against schenck because his wife mrs clara fenstermacher is confined to her bed under the care of a physi cian suffering from injuries re ceived october 26 when she was struck by the machine driven by schenck on west broad street near cambridge avenue mrs fen stermacher was badly injured as also was her little grandson ralph smith of the west side schenck was represented at the hearing by attorney harvey h steckel of allentown attorney steckel went the bail of the defen dant the department of chemistry has recently received from germany two interesting types of apparatus for use in the department of quan tative analysis the first is for the volmetric determination of carbon in pig iron and steel the volume of the products of combustion of the sample is accurately measured and then the carbon dioxide is ab sorbed the weight of carbon in the sample is calculated from the difference in volume by the use of this apparatus accurate determina tion of carbon can be made at four minute intervals the second apparatus is built to determine the amounts of sulphur and carbon in the same sample by combustion of the sample in an elec tric furnace the estimation of the sulphur and carbon is finally deter mined by acidimetric titration of the asborbed volatile products of combustion the two determina tions can be completed in eight minutes the most outstanding feature of these new devices is their speed of operation a second feature is their accuracy of analysis which permits determinations of very small amounts of carbon and sulphur such as an ounce in a ton of metal senior balance sheets h m gano up lehigh football squad saturday afternoon at lewisburg that completely an nihilated the brown and white 40-0 with art davidowitz and bob bennett gone from the line-up and other offensive backs lining the bench the lehigh teams could do little but checked as best it could the rapid advances of the bucknell bison from the thrilling first quarter in which jimmy fritts recovered a fumble by bucknell on its own 24 yard line until the dull fourth per iod when the lehigh team might just as well from a spectator's standpoint have been playing soc cer the bucknell eleven led by captain halicki kept up a contin ual drive passing over lehigh's heads and running around her wings for a total of six touch downs lehigh takes small squad coach austy tate deciding to rest up his list of ill and injured for the forthcoming battle of eas ton took only a limited number of men with him up-state art lehr and fran evers in the line and bennett and davidowitz in the backfield were among those who did not take the trip not one of the starting backfield remained in the game to the end cowboy el liott was relieved at the quarterback position near the beginning of the second quarter by dick johnston who teamed with davvy last year at the halfback position until he sustained a badly wrenched knee the backfield that finished the game for lehigh flynn oiler jones and harris was miserably weak against the bison third team bucknell outshone the lehigh eleven in every department of the game except punting elliott johnston and harris all did some excellent kicking every yard gained in kicking however was wiped out by the superior running back of punts by the bucknell backs the orange and blue cap tain halicki who appeared on the field with his head tied in a ban dage and brumbaugh a sophomore quarterback ran back punts for 25 and 30 yards a substitute line as well as a sec ondary backfield finished the game tubby miller and bill badgley were the only two starting in the line to finish the game the first string men with the exception of dewey trantum who continued to execute some beautiful tackles were all re lieved before the close of the first half bucknell fumble unproductive two breath-taking fumbles in the first quarter furnished the only ex citement for the handful of lehigh followers brown and white root ers gave a sigh of relief when cow boy elliott's fumble in lehigh ter ritory was recovered by bill badg ley and a few minutes later took to frenzied yelling when jimmy fritts regained a bucknell fumble on the bison 24-yard line fritts was downed before he had an op portunity to break away cowboy elliott shot through for three yards on the first play a lateral pass thrown by elliott looked unproduc tive but fritts wriggled through the line for a 4-yard gain lehigh's chances for a first down on the 14 yard line and a possible touchdown were lost on two uncompleted for ward passes and the ball was handed to bucknell the lewis burg collegians then proceeded to score two touchdowns the first score came after elliott's pass had been intercepted by brumbaugh who ran the ball to lehigh's 30 yard line passes to slate and hambacker put the ball across for the first touchdown after a series of passes halicki again carried the ball to the 3 yard line as the quarter ended brumbaugh carried the ball over on the first play in the second quarter three touchdowns in second half continued on page four tommy ayre intercepted a pass in the middle of the field after the resumption of play and dick john ston relieving elliott at quarter on the very first play smashed through the line for eight yards an off-side penalty against bucknell gave the brown and white team a first down bucknell intercepted one of johnston's passes and a few plays later slate a sophomore got loose on an open field and ran to the 10-yard line where he was brought down by jimmy fritts who tackled him beautifully from behind lehigh's line failed to hold and the score stood bucknell 21 lehigh 0 bucknell's next at tempt to score was frustrated when quinn passed over the goal line business competition open ten hard working sophomores are wanted for the competition for assistant business manager of the mustard and cheese club all interested report at drown hall 7:30 thursday evening members of the club wishing charms should see joe con rath the lehigh student body and faculty will be called upon this week to contribute their share tow ards the support of the red cross the current campaign will be un dertaken by the staff of the lehigh union under the direction of fred trafford in order that the appeal may reach all undergraduates the staff of the lehigh union will con duct a canvass of the students and living groups the call has also been extended to the faculty through the union and up to date their response has been encourag ing all men who expect to graduate in february or june 1929 should carefully check their balance sheets if there are any irregularities or er ror sof any sort the student should attend to the matter at once by a conference with the dean this applies to those whose records are clear as well as those who have ir regular records the cosmos club will meet this evening at 6 p m in drown hall for dinner l h gipson will be the speaker and dr c c bidwell will preside this club is com posed of nine faculty members the university receive more than a thousand dollars from the endowment fund and other sources according to an analysis of instruc tion costs at lehigh made by natt m emery vice president and como troller the report shows that for the collegiate year 1927-1928 the aver age costs per individual student was 656.01 the costs for the pas five years have been 1923-1924 654.81 1924-1925 670.58 1925 1926 641.99 1926-1927 593.91 the comparatively low figures for 1926-1927 are owing to the increased enrollment that year reducing the overhead expenses per individual student expenditures made by the uni versity are from 200 to 250 in ex cess of the annual tuition of each student tuition fees average 400 a year per man this barely equals the salaries of professors and in structors administrative costs and the expense of taking care of the campus buildings and equipment are dependent upon the endowment and other sources students who missed more than a reasonable number of classes this semester have been notified by george b curtis associate dean and registrar to attend classes regular ly parents of the students who took these cuts were also notified there is no fixed number of cuts which a man must have be fore he will receive a notice from the dean , the rule is flexible and is applied to individual cases at the discretion of the dean but usually when a student has accumulated ten cuts he receives a warning and his parents ctre notified when a man misses so many classes that the dean finds it ne cessary to issue a second warning the student may be placed on cut probation this means that if a student takes more than a limited number of cuts decided by the dean he will automatically be dropped from school however according to dean mcconn it is necessary to apply this rule only in the cases of chronic cutters if a student is absent from class the instructor is required to record a grade of e for that students if a man misses an unannounced quiz he receives a grade of e but if he misses a regularly announced quiz he is given an f and is not entitled to another quiz unless he presents an excuse from the dean's office seniors inspect conowingo plant bidwell attends optical meeting election of a delegate to the na tional undergraduate interfrater nity council meeting to be held in the hotel pennsylvania in new york on nov 30-dec 1 was the main item of business to be brought before the interfraternity council at its meeting in drown hall last night richard b johnston was elected to represent the council at this meeting at which deferred rushing and initiation cooperative buying pledges living in chapter houses scholarship rough house initiations power of interfraternity councils and activities of intefra ternity councils will be discussed a petition for admission to the council was received from phi sig ma delta and was laid on the table until the next meeting heads of the committees on the various in ter-fraternity sports announced that all matches must be played off when scheduled or be forfeited the president requested that all the houses get behind the red cross drive and help to put it over the top the dean's opinion of the last house party season was quite satis factory he said that although the senior ball was much dryer than the junior prom last spring there were several rather wet spots at the house dances saturday night par ticularly the larger dances where there were four houses in combina tion at present the dean is work ing on a plan whereby petitions for one or two house open or closed dances and for three house closed dances only will be granted there will be no permission given for four house combinations final results of the freshman cab inet elections were announced last monday by charles halsted class earlier this year than ever before instructors must turn their reports in to george b curtis associate dean and registrar before wednes day nov 14 the valentine team will record the grades on sunday nov 18 so that the reports may be mailed the following day students whose grades are above passing will not receive a report at this time but all men who have a grade of e or f in any subject will supporting the theory of evolution is overwhelm ing declared dr carothers the sequence was probably protozoa boneless sea-creature vertebrate fish amphibian and mammal thence developing from a furry tree dweller to a larger and slightly more intelligent creature the pro anthropoid the speaker then de scribed in detail the characteristics of the eolith the pithecanthropus erectus the heidelberg man the piltdown man the neanderthal man the cromagnon man and the neolithic man two common vestiges of primi tive man remain with us today one the ability to wiggle our ears and the other moles believed to be rep resentative of the type of skin that covered prehistoric man but the fact that we know so little yet are every day learning the whole story bit by bit is what makes the study of primitive man so romantically in teresting it has been said what we hit is history what we miss mystery the story of the evolu tion of man is like a play upon which at intervals the curtain de scends between him and extinction the whole story of man's develop ment is a demonstration of the law of social progress that acquisition of knowledge is a slow process of ad dition but there is a corollary law that the rate of social progress moves with an acceleration the world has progressed more since the days of washington than in all the time before i see an even better life in the future hammond talks to educational club with a long face and defensive attitude a member of the produc tion committee of the mustard and cheese club made it public that there will be no fall show given by the club this year owing to the lack of a coach since the club will not give a fall production the committee is now concentrating all its efforts on the spring show plans have been made to secure wallis milam the ned wayburn coach who so materially aided the last spring show in its success of two years ago as coach of the production this year mr milam has long been asso ciated with ned wayburn's produc tions and before coming to lehigh two years ago was coach of a so ciety show in florida in which the chorus and cast vv ere worth 50,000,000 tom brennan and n h adams members of the production commit tee are beginning the scenario this week so that the show may get off to an early start the business com petition is also starting this week with the contestants beginning work on the program contracts have been sent to the alumni for the out of town shows and the hard work of the business staff has already be gun the club will inaugurate its spring show this year with a trip beginning easter monday and con tinuing for the rest of the week re turning to bethlehem the following monday for its home how this will be the first musical com edy to be given by the club in two years last year this custom was dropped in favor of the production of three one-act plays coached by a member of the faculty thirty senior electricals accom panied by professors seifert beav er hibsham anderson maylott and andreas inspected the cono wingo hydro-electric plant of the philadelphia electric company system at conowingo maryland on sunday the party left bethlehem at 7:30 a m in automobiles and ar rived at the plant about 11:30 mr roger taylor father of roger tay lor jr who is a senior electrical was in charge of the plant and ed as host the students were treated to a chicken dinner in the new club house after which the regular in spection of the plant began the high tension sub-station machine shop turbine hall and water wheels were carefully examined the gen erators were not running yesterday because of low water but mr tay lor started one of the units before the group departed at the present time the conowingo plant is merely taking the peak loads while the steam plant at philadelphia takes the base load however in the spring of the year when the river is high conowingo takes the base load and the steam plant takes the peak loads supper was eaten at exton and the future steinmetzes arrived in bethlehem at 10 p m sunday the trip was the most popular ever taken and is expected to be an annual event for electri cal engineers while driving to college last fri day morning dr charles c bidwell met with an accident when his car collided with a campus ford at the adams street entrance dr bidwell was coming up adams street and the ford was coming east on packer avenue the left rear wheel of dr bidwell's car hit the left front wheel of the ford smashing it and bending the axle miners become operators of classifying machine library circulation continues to increase under the leadership of profes sor m j luch a group of stu dents interested in debating last night discussed the question re solved that censorship of the rep resentative arts literature and perish from the earth student is held in accident in reviewing the investigation of engineering education conducted by the society for the promotion of engineering education before the faculty educational club yester day afternoon in the physics lec ture room dr harry p hammond declared that lehigh has gone far ther and been more constructive than any other university in follow ing out the suggestions of the s p e e dr hammond former lehigh in structor in civil engineering is pro fessor of civil engineering at brooklyn polytechnic institute a sassistant director of this so ciety dr hammond has made ex tensive studies in the methods of collegiate and non-collegiate techni cal institutions by means of lan tern slides and a lecture he pre sented the principal conditions re vealed by the society's research a great deal of the society's effort is directed toward the perfecting of engineering curricula and personell gano will address industrial society students in the mining engineer ing department recently operated for the first time a model of the dorr bowl classifier this model was bought for use in the coxe mining laboratory classification is the term applied to the separation of matter accord ing to the size or specific gravity of the parts in which it exists al though there are many ways of ac complishing this the dorr classi fier deals only with the wet pro cess or classification of solids mix ed with the liquids the dorr machine consists of an inclined trough in which is placed mechanically operated rakes upon these rakes is superimposed a shal low circular tank filled with water the material enters the bowl at the center a steady upward flow of water from the center of the bowl causes the fine solids to overflow into a collecting launder and the coarse oversize solids to settle to the bottom the coarse solids are then removed by the raking appar atus in the trough to the central dis charge opening in spite of the fact that normal use of the library is somewhat in terfered with owing to construc tion work the present circulation is larger than that of the same period last year since 1923-1924 there has been a yearly increase in the circul ation of between 4 and 5 thousand volumes and it is expected that this year will not p ye an exception howard s leach librarian states that the keeping of reserved books and periodicals in another building has prevented a number of students from seeing attractive new books which they might wish to read and which in other years they have seen when they came to the library while the monthly lists posted al low students to see what new books have been added to the library these lists are not as effective a stimulant as seeing the book itrelf mr leach also stated that there is no way possible red cross asks help gipson to make address at cosmos club dinner robert schenck jr 30 of chi cago 111 waived a hearing and en tered bail of 1000 for court before alderman f l kramlich of the west side he is charged by john fenstermacher of 406 first avenue with assault and battery by auto mobile mr fenstermacher ap peared to press the charge against schenck because his wife mrs clara fenstermacher is confined to her bed under the care of a physi cian suffering from injuries re ceived october 26 when she was struck by the machine driven by schenck on west broad street near cambridge avenue mrs fen stermacher was badly injured as also was her little grandson ralph smith of the west side schenck was represented at the hearing by attorney harvey h steckel of allentown attorney steckel went the bail of the defen dant the department of chemistry has recently received from germany two interesting types of apparatus for use in the department of quan tative analysis the first is for the volmetric determination of carbon in pig iron and steel the volume of the products of combustion of the sample is accurately measured and then the carbon dioxide is ab sorbed the weight of carbon in the sample is calculated from the difference in volume by the use of this apparatus accurate determina tion of carbon can be made at four minute intervals the second apparatus is built to determine the amounts of sulphur and carbon in the same sample by combustion of the sample in an elec tric furnace the estimation of the sulphur and carbon is finally deter mined by acidimetric titration of the asborbed volatile products of combustion the two determina tions can be completed in eight minutes the most outstanding feature of these new devices is their speed of up lehigh football squad saturday afternoon at lewisburg that completely an nihilated the brown and white 40-0 with art davidowitz and bob bennett gone from the line-up and other offensive backs lining the bench the lehigh teams could do little but checked as best it could the rapid advances of the bucknell bison from the thrilling first quarter in which jimmy fritts recovered a fumble by bucknell on its own 24 yard line until the dull fourth per iod when the lehigh team might just as well from a spectator's standpoint have been playing soc cer the bucknell eleven led by captain halicki kept up a contin ual drive passing over lehigh's heads and running around her wings for a total of six touch downs lehigh takes small squad coach austy tate deciding to rest up his list of ill and injured for the forthcoming battle of eas ton took only a limited number of men with him up-state art lehr and fran evers in the line and bennett and davidowitz in the backfield were among those who did not take the trip not one of the starting backfield remained in the game to the end cowboy el liott was relieved at the quarterback position near the beginning of the second quarter by dick johnston who teamed with davvy last year at the halfback position until he sustained a badly wrenched knee the backfield that finished the game for lehigh flynn oiler jones and harris was miserably weak against the bison third team bucknell outshone the lehigh eleven in every department of the game except punting elliott johnston and harris all did some excellent kicking every yard gained in kicking however was wiped out by the superior running back of punts by the bucknell backs the orange and blue cap tain halicki who appeared on the field with his head tied in a ban dage and brumbaugh a sophomore quarterback ran back punts for 25 and 30 yards a substitute line as well as a sec ondary backfield finished the game tubby miller and bill badgley were the only two starting in the line to finish the game the first string men with the exception of dewey trantum who continued to execute some beautiful tackles were all re lieved before the close of the first half bucknell fumble unproductive two breath-taking fumbles in the first quarter furnished the only ex citement for the handful of lehigh followers brown and white root ers gave a sigh of relief when cow boy elliott's fumble in lehigh ter ritory was recovered by bill badg ley and a few minutes later took to frenzied yelling when jimmy fritts regained a bucknell fumble on the bison 24-yard line fritts was downed before he had an op portunity to break away cowboy elliott shot through for three yards on the first play a lateral pass thrown by elliott looked unproduc tive but fritts wriggled through the line for a 4-yard gain lehigh's chances for a first down on the 14 yard line and a possible touchdown were lost on two uncompleted for ward passes and the ball was handed to bucknell the lewis burg collegians then proceeded to score two touchdowns the first score came after elliott's pass had been intercepted by brumbaugh who ran the ball to lehigh's 30 yard line passes to slate and hambacker put the ball across for the first touchdown after a series of passes halicki again carried the ball to the 3 yard line as the quarter ended brumbaugh carried the ball over on the first play in the second quarter three touchdowns in second half continued on page four tommy ayre intercepted a pass in the middle of the field after the resumption of play and dick john ston relieving elliott at quarter on the very first play smashed through the line for eight yards an off-side penalty against bucknell gave the brown and white team a first down bucknell intercepted one of johnston's passes and a few plays later slate a sophomore got loose on an open field and ran to the 10-yard line where he was brought down by jimmy fritts who tackled him beautifully from behind lehigh's line failed to hold and the score stood bucknell 21 lehigh 0 bucknell's next at tempt to score was frustrated when quinn passed over the goal line business competition open ten hard working sophomores are wanted for the competition for assistant business manager of the mustard and cheese club all interested report at drown hall 7:30 thursday evening members of the club wishing charms should see joe con rath the lehigh student body and faculty will be called upon this week to contribute their share tow ards the support of the red cross the current campaign will be un dertaken by the staff of the lehigh union under the direction of fred trafford in order that the appeal may reach all undergraduates the staff of the lehigh union will con duct a canvass of the students and living groups the call has also been extended to the faculty through the union and up to date their response has been encourag ing all men who expect to graduate in february or june 1929 should carefully check their balance sheets if there are any irregularities or er ror sof any sort the student should attend to the matter at once by a conference with the dean this applies to those whose records are clear as well as those who have ir
