in charge of this meeting reading parts have not yet been assigned professor f w chandler in his aspects of modern drama says of rosmersholm among the many meanings of this complex play one at least is clear sheer individualism defeats itself with a growth of a sense of moral respon sibility he who wills must more and more will to renounce he must develop the altruism of a higher love which is contrasted with the fierce individualism of the animal ibsei throughout his works lays the changes upon this dualism the con flict between nature and spirit it is the story of the love of a wo man who to win the man she loved tricked his wife into suicide then as her passion became more steady he learned of her deed and she had lost all together they leaped into the mill-race because one woman's nature overcame her spirit library is recipient of autographed book library ignores book week lehigh has reason to be especial ly interested in the rhodes schol arships his year three of her stu dents thomas m brennan 29 r max goepp jr 29 and john i kirkpatrick 29 are applying for the honor as well as the opportuni ty this scholarship affords the first is making his claim as a resi dent of new york state the latter two as students in pennsylvania the university has yet to have one of her sons win ' the coveted scholarship and each of these three men has much that may make le high realize this hope me nare se lected because of four primary qualities i literary and scholastic ability and attainments 2 quali ties of manhood truth courage de votion to duty sympathy for and protection of the weak kindliness unselfishness and fellowship 3 ex hibition during school days of mor al force of character and of in stincts to lead and to take an in terest in his schoolmates 4 fond ness for and success in manly out door sports such as cricket football and the like the rt hon cecil john rhodes exhibited all of these traits and it was his hope in set ting up the rhodes trust that such men might be benefited by three years training at oxford so that they might be the best men for the world's fight it will be no small task to win these places at oxford against the best students that the other colleges and universities have to offer the appointment will be made during the winter months when the state committees convene bus resumes old route over 80 people attended the lec ture of h g whitaker on gyro scopes last night at the meeting of the mechanical engineering society in the chemistry building mr wfihitaker representing the sperry gyroscope co makers of the world famous gyroscope compass stabiliz er and automatic helmsman dis cussed the origin and history of the gyroscope mr sperry head of the company was the first man to put the gyro scopue to a practical use which was to direct a torpedo along a straight course after 17 years of experi ment and research the gyroscopic compass was put in condition for dependable service this compass was first put on battleships to en able them to streer straight in bat tle practice after that they were adopted together with the automatic course indicator by merchant ships all over the world the compass consists of a bronze wheel turned by either a squirrel cage from alter nating current or by a direct cur rent motor and all mounted on a device which allows it to swing in any direction the wheel weighs 55 pounds and rotates at a speed of 6000 revolutions per minute the effect of gravity is offset by a mer cury tube the whole compass de pends on the ability of the rotating wheel to always maintain the same position with respect to some fixed body outside the earth slides were shown giving an idea of the size and shape of the var ious apparatus similar to the compass is the sta bilizer which keeps ships from roll ing the action is essentially the same as that of the compass in recent years an airplane stabilizer has been developed which will hold a plane steady in bumpy air and even allow the pilot to leave the controls for long periods of time the ford airplane co has recently given this a most satisfactory test the turn indicator for planes has long proven successful and is one of the many products manufactured by this company metal mike is an adaption of the compass it is so arranged that the slightest deviation of a ship off its course induces an electric current which starts the steering machinery bringing the ship back on the course an auto matic course registering machine is often run in conjunction with met al mike to keep a record of the course steered at all times the society voted to adopt charms and secretary marshall was directed to take orders and send for them at once a complete review of the foot ball season thus far is the text of okey's article in the november issue of the alumni bulletin just off the press okeson does this with a thoroughness giving the high spots of each game by words and pictures he sizes up the situa tion giving a prediction for better things as the green wears off the bulletin continues the same policy inaugurated in the october number the cover is modernistic in design the editorials are listed in the same manner and the alum ni article is continued this time by walter okeson a new department is started giving the activities of the various alumni clubs through out the country piles and underbracings in sub ways was the subject of lazarus white's address at the civil engin eering society meeting held last evening in the physics lecture room mr white is president of spencer white prentis co consulting en gineer and a leading authority on subway construction mr white showed that the three main difficulties in subway con struction are narrow streets soft ground and existing obstacles such as buildings gas pipes sewers etc the streets must be kept open to traffic thus necessitating the cut and cover type of construction the surface excavation is done at night and covered with wooden deck further excavation is carried on under this decking mr white showed slides of sev eral important undebracing jobs in cluding the brooklyn bridge under pinning this bridge was built on some old wine vaults of which all records had been lost after the lecture mr white answered many questions asked by the audience library adds new books to shelves debating society elects members clubs petition . for speakers m a de wolf howe well known author graduate of the class of 1886 has presented an autographed copy of his latest book classic shades to the lehigh library the inscrip tion on the fly leaf reads to the library of lehigh university the first classic shades known to m a de wolf howe the book contains five essays one on timothy dwight yale mary lyon mt holyoke mark hopkins williams james mccosh prince ton and one on charles william elliot of harvard this book will be in the collection of the library and a standard copy will be placed on the shelves for general use senior civils will inspect new york city structures next week will be national book week but the lehigh library is not going to do anything about it while the underlying idea of na tional book week is probably more concerned with the sale of books than with the lending of them de clared librarian leach in an inter view it is a good plan to have peo ple think a little more about books and their value and it is appro priate that the list of the many fine books acquired by the library during october should appear si multaneously with the announce ment of book week i should be glad to see an increased circulation during this period but book week or no book week the lehigh li brary stands ready to serve the stu dents at any time the lehigh valley transportation company last wednesday resumed a twenty-minute bus schedule be tween broad and new streets and the five points this twenty-min ute service will take the place of the thirty-minute service which has been in effect during the past few months between the five points and goepp and center streets the service was extended to cen ter street about a month ago in re sponse to a request by the people living in that section the officials of the lehigh valley transportation company decided to give it a fair trial hoping that the extended serv ice would increase the revenue on this line however just the oppo site turned out to be the case c r mcßride speaks . on ileeman effect a plea that technical students be informed that there is a human problem in industry as well as a technical one and that personnel and management have assumed larger proportions than technical questions was made at a meeting of college and business executives at tended by president richards in new york city recently the meeting was arranged by samuel a lewisohn vice president and treasurer of the miami copper company who felt that there was a need for greater co-operation be tween technical schools and col leges and larger business concerns other industrial leaders present were owen d young chairman of the board of directors of general electric corporation g dunn president of j g white engineer ing corporation mr cheney a new york banker and general rees one of the assistant vice pres idents of the american telephone & telegraph company owen d young stated that at present the general electric co had ten positions of a managerial character open with salaries of from 50,000 to 100,000 which they would be glad to fill if competent men could be found but they can't find the men he said that colt leges train the students so well that most of the men take technical po sitions president richards how ever believes that probably two thirds of the technical graduates get into business rather than tech nical work after they have been out of college 15 years dr richards called mr young's attention to the cadet courses given by many concerns as a means of training college men for large in dustries mr young replied that these courses were in charge of technical men and consequently the cadets are trained for technical po sitions dr richards maintained that if such was the case industry itself was responsible for the situa tion mr young admitted that it was president richards believes that a man without inborn ability can not become a good manager through education and that if col lege men taking cadet courses are given managerial instruction the personnel and technical men could be determined the president said two problems should be made clear to the student besides the technical problem they are the economic problem that is will the undertaking pay and the organiza tion and management problem nothing definite was agreed upon at the meeting except to instruct the board in charge of survey of en gineering education to investigate what is being done and what might be done to train college men for managerial positions the following colleges were repre sented at the meeting massachu setts institute of technology brown university faculty dramatic club will meet wednesday evening novem ber 14 at the home of professor robert w hall 37 east church st the unprecedented interest with which the nation has followed th recent presidential campaign in which herbert hoover overwhelm ingly defeated his democratic ri val governor alfred smith mani fested itself with unusual vigor here last night when both students and faculty members forsook their beds until the early hours of morning to learn the final results over 60 students took advantage of the opportunity to miss classes to vote most of these were resi dents of nearby cities but several went a considerable distance to cast their ballots baltimore and columbus ohio were the two most distant places travelled to by vot ers excited groups crowded about radios from early evening when the first reports began to come in until well after midnight when the reports showed that hoover had swept the country those who had no radios watched the progress of the election in front of the globe-times office where sectional results were posted as they came in although the school had favored hoover in the straw vote conducted by the alexander hamilton society the complete victory of the repub lican candidate even in usually strong democratic states came as a surprise to most and precipitated lengthy discussions everywhere faculty members have perhaps been even more interested in the election than have the ' students two factions one led by dean mc conn and one by dean curtis have engaged in verbal debate on the major issues ever since the cam paign began in view of the out come it might be best not to reveal which factions the deans support ed however the faction whose convictions were rebuked will un doubtedly be the subject of consid erable-banter according to the lead er of the victorious group mr cummings of the bethlehem steel company addressed a meeting of the mining and geology society last night on raw materials used in the steel industry purchasing department figures show that one or two cars of brok en crockery are bought each month to line the bottoms of the pipe mill furnaces three to five hundred tons of middling flour for cleaning tin plates are required in the same period of time while five or six cars of peanut shuck meal are also need ed for the tin plate 200,000 is spent each year for palm oil 100.000,000 bricks are used 3,000 dozen brooms and 10,000 is re quired to pay for the supply of toil et paper and towels three kinds of iron ore is suitable foruse namely hemitite magne tite and limestone none of the ore is pure however and of the im purities silica phosphorous sulfur zinc and lead must be controlled of these phosphorus is the most important as it changes a bessimet ic to a hon-bessimetic product silica can readily be removed but sulfur is very hard to separate ex cept in large amounts ores from north africa carry small amounts of zinc and lead but not in great enough quantity to pay for their removal and concentration as a by product as the impurities are troublesome the ores are not sought by the steel industry the first raw material of the bethlehem steel company was pro cured in cuba and this ore started an operation that has continued un der the same company for forty four years it commenced the man ufacture of steel in conjunction with the pennsylvania steel company under a twenty year agreement at the expiration of the time one of the concerns was to sell its interest to the other and in this manner the bethlehem steel doubled its size only on the south coast of cuba is ore mined for the bethlehem steel although the north coast con tains mirea ores in great quantity mirea ores are mud ores and as yet are not economical for commercial use the south coast has furnished 20,000,000 tons half of which went to bethlehem in chile the topo mine was se cured and has become one of the main sources of supply furnishing one and one-half million tons a year the cornwall mine opened in 1741 is the largest mine in the east magnetite is obtained in new jersey and new york and the company also holds interests in the lake superior mines one of the vitally important ma terials for the operation of a steel plant is an abundant supply of both coking and gas coals limestone and dolomite are required for the furnaces two of three million dol lars are spent each year for tin that is used in tin plating the lecture was well attended and refreshments were served after ward . tentative plans for the mid-win ter homecoming to be held the lat ter part of february ire being for hall's home mrs r m smith is in charge of this meeting reading parts have not yet been assigned professor f w chandler in his aspects of modern drama says of rosmersholm among the many meanings of this complex play one at least is clear sheer individualism defeats itself with a growth of a sense of moral respon sibility he who wills must more and more will to renounce he must develop the altruism of a higher love which is contrasted with the fierce individualism of the animal ibsei throughout his works lays the changes upon this dualism the con flict between nature and spirit it is the story of the love of a wo man who to win the man she loved tricked his wife into suicide then as her passion became more steady he learned of her deed and she had lost all together they leaped into the mill-race because one woman's nature overcame her spirit library is recipient of autographed book library ignores book week lehigh has reason to be especial ly interested in the rhodes schol arships his year three of her stu dents thomas m brennan 29 r max goepp jr 29 and john i kirkpatrick 29 are applying for the honor as well as the opportuni ty this scholarship affords the first is making his claim as a resi dent of new york state the latter two as students in pennsylvania the university has yet to have one of her sons win ' the coveted scholarship and each of these three men has much that may make le high realize this hope me nare se lected because of four primary qualities i literary and scholastic ability and attainments 2 quali ties of manhood truth courage de votion to duty sympathy for and protection of the weak kindliness unselfishness and fellowship 3 ex hibition during school days of mor al force of character and of in stincts to lead and to take an in terest in his schoolmates 4 fond ness for and success in manly out door sports such as cricket football and the like the rt hon cecil john rhodes exhibited all of these traits and it was his hope in set ting up the rhodes trust that such men might be benefited by three years training at oxford so that they might be the best men for the world's fight it will be no small task to win these places at oxford against the best students that the other colleges and universities have to offer the appointment will be made during the winter months when the state committees convene bus resumes old route over 80 people attended the lec ture of h g whitaker on gyro scopes last night at the meeting of the mechanical engineering society in the chemistry building mr wfihitaker representing the sperry gyroscope co makers of the world famous gyroscope compass stabiliz er and automatic helmsman dis cussed the origin and history of the gyroscope mr sperry head of the company was the first man to put the gyro scopue to a practical use which was to direct a torpedo along a straight course after 17 years of experi ment and research the gyroscopic compass was put in condition for dependable service this compass was first put on battleships to en able them to streer straight in bat tle practice after that they were adopted together with the automatic course indicator by merchant ships all over the world the compass consists of a bronze wheel turned by either a squirrel cage from alter nating current or by a direct cur rent motor and all mounted on a device which allows it to swing in any direction the wheel weighs 55 pounds and rotates at a speed of 6000 revolutions per minute the effect of gravity is offset by a mer cury tube the whole compass de pends on the ability of the rotating wheel to always maintain the same position with respect to some fixed body outside the earth slides were shown giving an idea of the size and shape of the var ious apparatus similar to the compass is the sta bilizer which keeps ships from roll ing the action is essentially the same as that of the compass in recent years an airplane stabilizer has been developed which will hold a plane steady in bumpy air and even allow the pilot to leave the controls for long periods of time the ford airplane co has recently given this a most satisfactory test the turn indicator for planes has long proven successful and is one of the many products manufactured by this company metal mike is an adaption of the compass it is so arranged that the slightest deviation of a ship off its course induces an electric current which starts the steering machinery bringing the ship back on the course an auto matic course registering machine is often run in conjunction with met al mike to keep a record of the course steered at all times the society voted to adopt charms and secretary marshall was directed to take orders and send for them at once a complete review of the foot ball season thus far is the prentis co consulting en gineer and a leading authority on subway construction mr white showed that the three main difficulties in subway con struction are narrow streets soft ground and existing obstacles such as buildings gas pipes sewers etc the streets must be kept open to traffic thus necessitating the cut and cover type of construction the surface excavation is done at night and covered with wooden deck further excavation is carried on under this decking mr white showed slides of sev eral important undebracing jobs in cluding the brooklyn bridge under pinning this bridge was built on some old wine vaults of which all records had been lost after the lecture mr white answered many questions asked by the audience library adds new books to shelves debating society elects members clubs senior civils will inspect new york city structures next week will be national book week but the lehigh library is not going to do anything about it while the underlying idea of na tional book week is probably more concerned with the sale of books than with the lending of them de clared librarian leach in an inter view it is a good plan to have peo ple think a little more about books and their value and it is appro priate that the list of the many fine books acquired by the library during october should appear si multaneously with the announce ment of book week i should be glad to see an increased circulation during this period but book week or no book week the lehigh li brary stands ready to serve the stu dents at any time the lehigh valley transportation company last wednesday character open with salaries of from 50,000 to 100,000 which they would be glad to fill if competent men could be found but they can't find the men he said that colt leges train the students so well that most of the men take technical po sitions president richards how ever believes that probably two thirds of the technical graduates get into business rather than tech nical work after they have been out of college 15 years dr richards called mr young's attention to the cadet courses given by many concerns as a means of training college men for large in dustries mr young replied that these courses were in charge of technical men and consequently the cadets are trained for technical po sitions dr richards maintained that if such was the case industry itself was responsible for the situa tion mr young admitted that it was president richards believes that a man without inborn ability can not become a good manager through education and that if col lege men taking cadet courses are given managerial instruction the personnel and technical men could be determined the president said two problems should be made clear to the student besides the technical problem they are the economic problem that is will the undertaking pay and the organiza tion and management problem nothing definite was agreed upon at the meeting except to instruct the board in charge of survey of en gineering the nation has followed th recent presidential campaign in which herbert hoover overwhelm ingly defeated his democratic ri val governor alfred smith mani fested itself with unusual vigor here last night when both students and faculty members forsook their beds until the early hours of morning to learn the final results over 60 students took advantage of the opportunity to miss classes to vote most of these were resi dents of nearby cities but several went a considerable distance to cast their ballots baltimore and columbus ohio were the two most distant places travelled to by vot ers excited groups crowded about radios from early evening when the first reports began to come in until well after midnight when the reports showed that hoover had swept the country those who had no radios watched the progress of the election in front of the globe-times office where sectional results were posted as they came in although the school had favored hoover in the straw vote conducted by the alexander hamilton society the complete victory of the repub lican candidate even in usually strong democratic states came as a surprise to most and precipitated lengthy discussions everywhere faculty members have perhaps been even more interested in the election than have the ' students two factions one led by dean mc conn and one by dean curtis have engaged in verbal debate on the major issues ever since the cam paign began in view of the out come it might be best not to reveal which factions the deans support ed however the faction whose convictions were rebuked will un doubtedly be the subject of consid erable-banter according to the lead er of the victorious group mr cummings of the bethlehem steel company addressed a meeting of the mining and geology society last night on raw materials used in the steel industry purchasing department figures show that one or two cars of brok en crockery are bought each month to line the bottoms of the pipe mill furnaces three to five hundred tons of middling flour for cleaning tin plates are required in the same period of time while five or six cars of peanut shuck meal are also need ed for the tin plate 200,000 is spent each year for palm oil 100.000,000 bricks are used 3,000 dozen brooms and 10,000 is re quired to pay for the supply of toil et paper and towels three kinds of iron ore is suitable foruse namely hemitite magne tite and limestone none of the ore is pure however and of the im purities silica phosphorous sulfur zinc and lead must be controlled of these phosphorus is the most important as it changes a bessimet ic to a hon-bessimetic product silica can readily be removed but sulfur is very hard to separate ex cept in large amounts ores from north africa carry small amounts of zinc and lead but not in great enough quantity to pay for their removal and concentration as a by product as the impurities are troublesome the ores are not sought by the steel industry the first raw material of the bethlehem steel company was pro cured in cuba and this ore started an operation that has continued un der the same company for forty four years it commenced the man ufacture of steel in conjunction with the pennsylvania steel company under a twenty year agreement at the expiration of the time one of the concerns was to sell its interest to the other and in this manner the bethlehem steel doubled its size only on the south coast of cuba is ore mined for the bethlehem steel although the north coast con tains mirea ores in great quantity mirea ores are mud ores and as yet are not economical for commercial use the south coast has furnished 20,000,000 tons half of which went to bethlehem in chile the topo mine was se cured and has become one of the main sources of supply furnishing one and one-half million tons a year the cornwall mine opened in 1741 is the largest mine in the east magnetite is obtained in new jersey and new york and the company also holds interests in the lake superior mines one of the vitally important ma terials for the operation of a steel plant is an abundant supply of both coking and gas coals limestone and dolomite are required for the furnaces two of three
