to bach's or iginal score by members of the new york symphony orches tra the oboe used in this score is known as the oboe d'amoure since the time of bach however musicians have discarded this instrument in favor of the mod ern oboe of lower pitch like wise the score for the trumpets was too high for trumpeters to play safely in the early years of the festival dr wolle real ized this somewhat to his em barrassment whereupon he was forced to re-write the orchestra tion for these instruments this arrangement has been used ev ery year until this one when dr wolle was able to secure a at a spe cial meeting of the society at 4 p m wednesday may 9 in room 12 packer hall ing the picture the murky heaviness of atmosphere is re lieved by the contrast of a girl wearing a yellow dress seated at a table with a longshoreman or stevedore the other picture by canals cigarieres has also received exceptional attention by the same impressionistic means the artist has shown a cigar fac tory a deep dimly lighted room occupied by a mass of spanish women garments hanging on the walls add to the effect of the heaviness of atmosphere although the figures in the fore ground are at rest the artist has given the impression of fig ures moving in the background with suggestive yet complete ef fect the paintings in this exhibit belong to the period of the six ties and eighties of the nine teenth century modernistic painters now consider impres sionists as belonging to the past but when these pictures were first exhibited they were considered a definite and radi cal break with the style of the artists of that period one of the most boldly paint ed pictures of the group is pont aven sortie de la messe de 7 heures by loisseau the artist with full bold brush strokes has shown a group of persons leaving a church and scattering as they reach the foreground of the picture over 800 people have at tender the exhibit of the works of the french impressionists in the faculty room alumni alumni memorial building up to and including monday after noon it is estimated that as many more will attend before the close of the exhibition may 12 the display has attracted widespread interest because it is unusual to be able to see the works of so many of the french impressionists together at the same time on saturday morn ing g a howland assistant professor of the fine arts lec tured to psychology classes on the aesthetic approach to the pictures while percy hughes head of the department of phil osophy spoke on the psychologi cal approach the painting which has prob ably proved the most popular is le bar by canals it is a picture of a man and a girl dancing together in the fore ground of a cabaret filled with a dim blue haze of tobacco smoke which is faintly pierced by the yellow glow of a few artificial lamps although the spectator receives an impres sion that the girl's dress is white the artist has used only a few specks of white in paint two new courses the history of mathematics and a second course in analytic geometry will be offered by the mathe matics department next fall to students of sophomore standing the history of mathematics will be taught by carl arthur keeler who has been chosen be cause of his especial fitness to teach the subject he has done graduate work at the univer sity of california under pro fessor florian cajori one of the greatest students of the sub ject mr keeler has been do ing research work in mathemat ical history for the past several years his course is of great importance in orienting the stu dent in furnishig ' a human background for his work in mathematics and other sciences the second course in analytic geometry will be a three hour course designed for those stu dents who wish a more thorough knowledge of analytics than is given in the required freshman course particular stress will be placed on general methods and on solid analytic geometry varsity nine s wamped lehigh university bethlehem pa tuesday
