" bethlehem steel offices where a special moving picture depicting interesting phases in the manufacture of steel was exhibited after a luncheon served in the steel ca feteria the members were guid ed through the many depart ments of the plant by a g wil liams sales agent of the com pany at the conclusion of this trip the conference officially dis banded prof howard eck feldt head of the mining de jartment was in charge of the local program delegates to the industries conference told of an enlighten ing trip last wednesday to the martin's creek plant of the al pha cement co when they were shown the operation of a modern cement plant that evening after a dinner furnish ed through the courtesy of the alpha co l a anderson chief engineer of the company spoke on the history and manufac ture of portland cement and dr h f bain secretary of the american institute of mining and metallurgical engineers told how cooperation has im proved the industrial situation in this country continued on page in profu sion from the ceiling and faint rays of light penetrated through booths along the walls bearing names suitable to the occasion offered a retreat from the dance floor and the flow ing bowl contained cool re freshment the orchestra was perched on one end on a stage decorated in keeping with the remainder of the hall j h courtney a cornell man is superintendent of con struction on packard hall mr courtney who is with the ir win-leighton company of phil adelphia the contractors re cently completed the construc tion of several buildings at georgetown university wash ington d c he graduated from cornell university in 1917 as a civil engineer ground was broken for pack ard hall recently and the work of excavating and laying the foundations has been sub-let to the hock contracting com pany of allentown which placed a half-yard steam shovel into operation another steam shov el will begin work shortly the excavated earth is being dump ed into several depressions on the campus the top-^oil is being removed from in front of the steam shov el by a scraper and is being piled on the side of the build ing site this rich soil will be spread back over the ground after depart ment of wharves docks and ferries to inspect harbor faci lities of philadelphia wednesday the party will be taken to conowingo maryland by motor bus there the large hydro-electric plant packer hall mr gilpin stated that two thirds of the 600,000 miles of paved roads in the united states need maintenance and that if you protect the surface you ex tend the life of the highway the mechanical engineer and a journalist of high renown in hungary he was born at komoron hungary fifty-one years ago his educa tion was received in pozsony hungary at the senior high school vienna austria and through technical studies in london england and at winchescter college dr de lipovicsky has traveled in asia egypt balkan states russian chile mexico and the united states among his num erous publications are geograph ical economical and scientific treatises the carnegie endowment for international peace institute procured the services of this man ' for the alexander hamil ton club
