25-2 fourteen engineering stu dents twelve seniors and two from the junior class were elected to membership in tau beta pi national honorary en gineering fraternity when the lehigh and parent chapter add ed new members monday the newly admitted mem bers include george w fearn side jr charles s thaeler george b thorn raymond r althouse edward s barnitz maurice e bender joseph g bent jr robert doehne jack bolton d m homer james b murray edgar g watkins all seniors and clarence l snavely and horace g wiest both juniors these men represent five of the engineering colleges of the fourteen five are civil engin eers and five are electrical en gineers two mechanicals a chemical and a miner complete the quota tau beta pi was founded at lehigh in 1885 by prof wil liams a lehigh alumnus and for a long period a member of the faculty prof williams is the donor also of english com position prizes the honorary engineering society that he founded forty-two years ago now has approximately fifty chapters throughout the united states it is recognized as the foremost honorary organization open to undergraduate engin eers membership in it espe cially at lehigh where the par ent chapter exists is the most distinct honor bestowed upon students hill and dalers defeated by perm week-end senior ball and house dances biggest affairs of fall house parties at lehigh were brought to a close last sunday after two days of en tertainment excitement and ac tivity from the official open ing at the phi gamma delta tea dance on friday afternoon to the close of the last house dance late saturday night there was something to do at all hours the girls began ar riving from all parts of the hemisphere on friday after noon not to depart until the late hours on sunday the tea dance at the phi gamma delta house was espe cially well attended with dave fluharty's vanities orchestra supplying the music the sen ior ball in the upper gym fri day night was much bigger than was anticipated over five hundred persons were at the ball which was an inovation during house party week-end the decorations were in the best taste while the music given forth by nat shilkret's orchestra left nothing to be de sired two football games and a tea dance by the interfraternity council provided enough enter tainment saturday afternoon the climax of the week-end was reached on saturday night however when the various houses entertained all friends far and near at their respec tive dances the round of ac tivities was one of the best ever planned for an affair of this type while the list of guests was certainly the larg est ever to honor lehigh with their presence at fall house parties basketball men to report soon fast run nosed out by one point in the robert w blake society held its initiial meeting of the year last wednesday evening at the home of dr percy hughes head of the department of psy chology and philosophy sev eral new men were admitted to membership these men were elected at the close of the school year last june the new mem bers included d a randalls k e heim e w mcgovern w b billmeyer j j long acre all seniors august w wiesner s m borowsky and a b baldree there still re main two vacancies in the so ciety present as guests of the so ciety were the new members of the faculty all of whom spoke briefly about some phase of philosophy or psychology which was of most interest to them dr crow led a particularly in teresting general discussion on the question of equalized edu cational opportunities the robert w blake so ciety is the honorary club of the department of philosophy psychology and education and is restricted to fifteen mem bers chosen from juniors and seniors whose work in the de partment is of high grade and whose interest in psychology and philosophy gives promise of independent work not more than ten men from any one class are ever offered member ship in this organization the society was founded in 1924 and was named to honor the memory of professor robert w blake the first director of the college of arts and sci ences and head of the depart ment of latin for more than twenty years until his death in 1921 mrs robert w blake was present at the meeting as the guest of the society and in vited it to hold its next meet ing at her home cyanide adopts new activities tionships plan to help collegiate rela two members of last year's senior class have returned this fall as fellows in the depart ment of chemistry richard j degray and hugh c jones graduates with the degree of chemical engineer were award ed last spring the fellowships afforded by the student chem ical foundation the plan will be known as the student chemistry found ation founded in honor of har ry maas ullmann head of the department of chemistry of lehigh university this enterprise unlike any thing ever before attempted by under-graduates was conceived by a special student stanley b adams who entered with the class of 1930 after securing the sanction of the authorities toward his plan he met with the freshman class cabinet and set it before the members after a great deal of delibera tion doubts were dispelled and the cabinet voted favorably to a motion that it does all in its power to carry the scheme to a successful completion a com mittee was appointed by pres ident oiler to put the plan in writing and to interview dr richards concerning it they drew up the following consti tution under which it is now in operation the object of this foundation is to establish research scholar ships in the department of chemistry for lehigh gradu ates only and to establish a trust fund which shall be allow ed to accrue to not less than 50,000.00 including interest in the trust fund after which the income from the trust fund may be used in any way that seem 3 fit to further research in the department of chemistry of lehigh university the research scholarships will pay a minimum of 750.00 to the holder each school year all tuition and other fees ex cept graduation fees shall be remitted continued on page four money necessary to make the work of the foundation a suc cess will be raised wholly by voluntary contributions o f nick borrelli last saturday afternoon led a fighting muh lenberg team to its third suc cessive victory over lehigh after losing steadily before a wonderful lehigh aerial attack in the first half the cardinal and gray came back in the sec ond to take advantage of two fatal mistakes winning 13-3 the first half was clearly lehigh's raleigh and davido witz played splendidly and were the backbone of a brilliant aerial offensive in the first quarter which advanced the ball from lehigh's 30-yard line into a scoring position on muh lenberg's 15-yard line from here davidowitz kicked a pret ty placement goal for three points in the second quarter despite the fact that muhlen berg out-punted the brown and white in the ratio of two yards to one lehigh was quite her opponents equal stopping a dangerous muhlenberg attack on the 10-yard line and starting an assault upon the muhlen berg goal line which was only halted by the ending of the half after a fifty-five yard ad vance had been made in this half lehigh made six first downs all on forward passes to her opponent's four just as truly the second half was clearly muhlenberg's by three exchanges of punts in which muhlenberg out-punted lehigh four yards to three the visitors gained forty yards and a fifteen yard run by nick borrelli brought the ball to le high's 25-yard line after hold ing muhlenberg in a plucky stand and taking the ball on downs the brown and white team threw a pass which nick borrelli intercepted and car ried over for a touchdown the other muhlenberg score came in the fourth period when le high with the ball on her 27 yard line attempted three for ward passes the first was grounded the second caught out of bounds and the third in tercepted by evans of muhlen berg on the next play nick borrelli went over for a touch now out lehigh's annual student di rectory will make its appear ance the early part of this week this valuable little handbook containing much in formation of interest to stu dents is a month ahead of its last year's publishing date a great deal of additional data collected in the new directory has made it even more complete than ever dean curtis has an nounced that it will have all the blanks which were left in the previous issue filled with the proper information in appearance the directory will be very much as it was last year except that it will contain more pages the pages will be the same size as here tofor of the total of 88 pages 15 will be devoted to the fac ulty section and the remainder to students and student activi ties among the departments will be that listing the trustees followed by the administrative offices the students will all be listed according to the cur riculum in which they are en rolled and also their scholastic rank each fraternity will be listed with address telephone number and the name of the head of the house dormitory sections are to be listed in the same manner class officers are next listed following this comes the remaining organiza tions and societies a general athletic directory completes the list with all these features it is easy to see that the direc tory will be a book which every student can make use of con stantly authorities in the dean's of fice state that the new edition of this book is now on the press and will be available for pur chase within a very few days the price of the student direc tory is fifty cents and copies of it may be had at the bursar's office or at the supply bureau using only straight football tactics with few passes and no trick plays the frosh com pletely overwhelmed the scrap py drexel freshmen who visit ed taylor field saturday after noon and returned to philadel phia on the short end of the 25-2 score lehigh played a hard driving game from start to finish and was never in danger of losing the contest after having lost one prom ising chance to score in the first quarter when the ball was fumbled on drexel's twelve yard line elliott bucked his way across the goal line for the first touchdown before the game was five minutes old this tal ly came after harris full-back got around left-end for a 25 yard advance and placed the pigskin on the eight-yard mark it was in this quarter that drexel had its only hopeful chance to score palese dim inutive quarterback recovered a lehigh fumble on his own 37 yard line and followed this break by registering a first down after hard pounding at the center of the frosh de fense however the opportun ity was lost when gadd recov ered the ball as it rolled away from the tackled drexel full back lehigh punted out of danger and henceforth kept matters well in hand the second quarter opened with the ball in drexel's pos session a completed pass the first of the game netted 12 yards which were lost after the next play when a 15-yard pen alty for holding was imposed drexel punted to elliott who returned to the 33 yard line continued on page four alpha kappa psi honorary fraternity of the college of business administration will hold its meeting on thursday evening at the chi psi lodge stewart meade will deliver a paper relative to accounting subjects which will be discuss ed in open forum as is the cus tom at these meetings profes sors carothers cowan and curtiss faculty members of the society will also be pres ent at the dinner which will precede the business session this fraternity tries to bring subjects before its meetings that are of interest to all bus iness students the members exchange opinions and arrive at a definite conclusion before the close of each gathering the club under the leadership of president helmsteadter will try to increase its influence by having more frequent meetings than formerly in the fraternity houses of its members the thursday evening session is the first of the series and the loyal support of its members will be very much appreciated by the society the review lehigh's most recent publication made its first appearance this season on saturday with this the third issue of its existence the le high review begins its first complete year of service to the student and faculty in this issue many new and interesting things were intro duced among the outstanding features crammed into the fif ty-nine pages of interesting reading matter are attractive articles written by members of the faculty alumni associa tion and student body poetry a well-written book review and technical and editorial de partments if this issue may be taken as a criterion lehigh will have a magazine of which it may well be proud the drive for subscriptions will continue until saturday when the competition for bus iness manager will close a complete canvass of the cam pus will be made and every stu dent should not hesitate to sub scribe pictures anyone having pictures of the frosh rush two weeks ago are requested to turn in proofs to t chandler chi phi house ah other inter esting pictures will also be welcomed tickets applications for reserved seats at the lafayette game must be made this week at the athletic office cheering section seats will be available on november 7 8 9 at a recent meeting of the cyanide club attended by its total fifteen members an impor tant step was taken in the de velopment of lehigh's intercol legiate relations it was de cided that the activities of the club should be extended to in clude the aiding of visiting ath letic teams letters were read by okey in reply to the requests he had made of other colleges in re gard to the manner in which similar organizations were con ducted on their campuses it is expected that a policy will be adopted which will incorpor ate the main features of the red key society of cornell and the green key society of dartmouth according to the proposed plan it will be the main duty of the club to meet visiting teams assist them in securing hotel accommodations and to act in general as an aide of the visiting manager continued on page four the members of the club hope by this means to promote friendlier relations between le high and her athletic oppon ents the working out of the details of the plan was left to the executive committee which consists of kirkpatrick bren nan trantum webbe and bak er it ts also the duty of this body to revise the constitution to include the new purpose and to confer with the arcadia in regard to distinguishing insig nia after some discussion by coach roy geary has issued a call for all varsity basketball aspirants to report for the ini tial practice on november 8 this allows a little less than a month for preliminary practice before the opening contest geary is starting his third year as basketball mentor at lehigh his first appearance here was in the 1916-17 season when he turned out one of the best teams that has ever sport ed the brown and white he is a member of the lehigh valley referee's association and knows basketball thoroughly in ad dition he has had several years experience as a professional basketeer craig l wright will manage the destinies of the goal-shooters geary's task this winter will be to develope a combination which can maintain lehigh's prestige in the court game two years ago under the direction of benny weinstein the south mountaineers won thirteen games losing only to army last year geary's team got off to a poor start dropping five consecutive contests but they concluded with a long string of victories further more the last two three-game series with lafayette have re sulted in clean sweeps for le high another record which the 1927-28 quintet will be entrust ed to uphold continued on page four this year's team will be built around three lettermen w b billmeyer is captain and has had two years exper ience as varsity guard harry hesse and ben berman are the other two veterans the form er is a junior and earned his l at center last year the lat ter has had two years exper lehigh's hill and dale team was defeated by a narrow mar gin saturday morning in a close contest with the perm harriers on their cobb's creek course the score of the dual meet was 27-28 in winning first place ben meronbeck of perm who was closely pressed by harry sames kanaly's ace shattered the course record by one sec ond he negotiated the five miles in 26 minutes 30 sec onds merenbeck is a product of northeast high school of philadelphia and also runs un der the colors of the meadow brook athletic club the for mer record was held by russell payne former perm star and holder of the two mile intercol legiate title sames in press ing merenbeck to his record run ran a heady race and fin ished second glenn captain of the red and blue came in third followed by duffy ait ken brown and white runner captain chickering finished fifth and walsh of perm sixth the first three men of each team were well matched but perm's greater team strength decided the contest cobb's creek course runs through fairview park and is a typical hill and dale trial it runs through a ravine through woods and farm country authorities in the dean's of fice state that the new edition of this book is now on the press and will be available for pur chase within a very few days the price of the student direc tory is fifty cents and copies of it may be had at the bursar's office or at the supply bureau using only straight football tactics with few passes and no trick plays the frosh com pletely overwhelmed the scrap py drexel freshmen who visit ed taylor field saturday after noon and returned to philadel phia on the short end of the 25-2 score lehigh played a hard driving game from start to finish and was never in danger of losing the contest after having lost one prom ising chance to score in the first quarter when the ball was fumbled on drexel's twelve yard line elliott bucked his way across the goal line for the first touchdown before the game was five minutes old this tal ly came after harris full-back got around left-end for a 25 yard advance and placed the pigskin on the eight-yard mark it was in this quarter that drexel had its only hopeful chance to score palese dim inutive quarterback recovered a lehigh fumble on his own 37 yard line and followed this break by registering a first down after hard pounding at the center of the frosh de fense however the opportun ity was lost when gadd recov ered the ball as it rolled away from the tackled drexel full back lehigh punted out of danger and henceforth kept matters well in hand the second quarter opened with the ball in drexel's pos session a completed pass the first of the game netted 12 yards which were lost after the next play when a 15-yard pen alty for holding was imposed drexel punted to elliott who returned to the 33 yard line continued on page four alpha kappa psi honorary fraternity of the college of business administration will hold its meeting on thursday evening at the chi psi lodge stewart meade will deliver a paper relative to accounting subjects which will be discuss ed in open forum as is the cus tom at these meetings profes sors carothers cowan and curtiss faculty members of the society will also be pres ent at the dinner which will precede the business session this fraternity tries to bring subjects before its meetings that are of interest to all bus iness students the members exchange opinions and arrive at a definite conclusion before the close of each gathering the club under the leadership of president helmsteadter will try to increase its influence by having more frequent meetings than formerly in the fraternity houses of its members the thursday evening session is the first of the series and the loyal support of its members will be very much appreciated by the society the review lehigh's most recent publication made its first appearance this season on saturday with this the third issue of its existence the le high review begins its first complete year of service to the student and faculty in this issue many new and interesting things were intro duced among the outstanding features crammed into the fif ty-nine pages of interesting reading matter are attractive articles written by members of the faculty alumni associa tion and student body poetry a well-written book review and technical and editorial de partments if this issue may be taken as a criterion lehigh will have a magazine of which it may well be proud the drive for subscriptions will continue until saturday when the competition for bus iness manager will close a complete canvass of the cam pus will be made and every stu dent should not hesitate to sub scribe pictures anyone having pictures of the frosh rush two weeks ago are requested to turn in proofs to t chandler chi phi house ah other inter esting pictures will also be welcomed tickets applications for reserved seats at the lafayette game must be made this week at the athletic office cheering section seats will be available on november 7 8 9 at a recent meeting of the cyanide club attended by its total fifteen members an impor tant step was taken in the de velopment of lehigh's intercol legiate relations it was de cided that the activities of the club should be extended to in clude the aiding of visiting ath letic teams letters were read by okey in reply to the requests he had made of other colleges in re gard to the manner in which similar organizations were con ducted on their campuses it is expected that a policy will be adopted which will incorpor ate the main features of the red key society of cornell and the green key society of dartmouth according to the proposed plan it will be the main duty of the club coach roy geary has issued a call for all varsity basketball aspirants to report for the ini tial practice on november 8 this allows a little less than a month for preliminary practice before the opening contest geary is starting his third year as basketball mentor at lehigh his first appearance here was in the 1916-17 season when he turned out one of the best teams that has ever sport ed the brown and white he is a member of the lehigh valley referee's association and knows basketball thoroughly in ad dition he has had several years experience as a professional basketeer craig l wright will manage the destinies of the goal-shooters geary's task this winter will be to develope a combination which can maintain lehigh's prestige in the court game two years ago under the direction of benny weinstein the south mountaineers won thirteen games losing only to army last year geary's team got off to a poor start dropping five consecutive contests but they concluded with a long string of victories further more the last two three-game series with lafayette have re sulted in clean sweeps for le high another record which the 1927-28 quintet will be entrust ed to uphold continued on page is a junior and earned his l at center last year the lat ter has had two years exper lehigh's hill and dale team was defeated by a narrow mar gin saturday morning in a close contest with the perm harriers on their cobb's creek course the score of the dual meet was 27-28 in winning first place ben meronbeck of perm who was closely pressed by harry sames kanaly's ace shattered the course record by one sec ond he negotiated the five miles in 26 minutes 30 sec onds merenbeck is a product of northeast high school of philadelphia and also runs un der the colors of the meadow brook athletic club the for mer record was held by russell payne former perm star and holder of the two mile intercol legiate title sames in press ing merenbeck to his record run ran a heady race and fin ished second glenn captain of the red and blue came in third followed by duffy ait ken brown and white runner captain chickering finished fifth and walsh of perm sixth the first three men of each team were well matched but perm's greater team strength decided the contest cobb's creek course runs through fairview park and is a typical hill and dale trial it runs through a ravine through woods and farm country
