thursday evening in the physics building almost a hundred men were present in cluding a number of freshmen the speaker of the evening was r l fox city engineer of bethlehem and at one time an instructor in the civil engin eering department of lehigh mr fox's topic was certain phases of municipal engineer ing and his practical exper ience enabled him to set be fore his audience the problems which a city engineer must deal with today continued on page four engineering has changed much in the past few years the engineer of yesterday was forced to work out his prob lems in the wilderness but to in his introductory remarks mr fox presented the state ment that the city engineering problems today have turned largely into problems of finance this fact has made it neces sary for engineers to know something of finance and the speaker said he was gratified to see that lehigh had intro duced economic courses into the engineers curricula in the second game of the season the frosh gridders came through with a 6-0 vic tory against rutgers as the score indicates it was a close ly contested match and was not decided until the final whistle blew the showing that the brown and white yearlings made against a much heavier team was very good austy tate's men worked like a ma chine and time after time held the raritan boys from scor ing elliot was one of the out standing players of the after noon and his running was very spectacular harris's kicks hall's playing at tackle and the good passing combina tions of the frosh clearly in dicate the wealth of material available for the mathematical society attended the inauguration ceremonies of william mather lewis new president of lafayette college dr lewis follows dr john h maccracken as president of lafayette fifty-five presidents of var ious colleges in the united states were among the 175 del egates at the inauguration ser vices the main address was given by dr pupin dr richards of lehigh also spoke at the luncheon lafayette announced that it had received the largest single contribution in its history in the form of 500,000 from john markle it is for the erection and endowment of a mining building once again the campus will ring with the merry chatter of feminine voices as another house party is ushered in bringing with it the week-end when schoolwork will be for gotten friday afternoon as the bell rings signifying the end of the last class house party will of ficially begin and as the sun sinks over the crest of south mountain on the following sunday afternoon it will ring down the curtain on two won derful days of real social ac tivity from then until the next check from home arrives there will be a remarkable lack of funds among the partici pants of those gay forty-eight hours the greatest attraction of these events scheduled is the senior hop which is open to every student alumnus and those members of the faculty who may feel the urge to at tend with the blare of trum pets the smooth rythym of sax aphones the throbbing of the drums the humming of banjos and the tinkle of the piano nat shilkret and his victor rec ord orchestra will be there to give added zeal to the many who trip the light fantastic blended with the music one will hear the shuffle of many feet clad in the brilliant gold and silver slippers of the ladies and the shining black of the men accompanied by the rustl cabinet men to be elected next tuesday dr estes from st luke's hos pital to talk on surgery in general the first college lecture of the year was held last thurs day in the auditorium of the south side high school the large hall was filled to capacity mostly by freshmen and soph omores before proceeding with the regular lecture several im portant announcements were made the freshmen were told to remain in their seats af ter the lecture and ware inform ed that nominations for fresh men officers were to be held on the following day in packer hall a college meeting to be held around the flag-pole fri day afternoon was also an nounced most appropriately the lec ture for the first meeting was delivered by a member of the staff of lehigh's newest de partment the department of architecture the talk deliv ered by professor howland was about the ins and outs of ar chitecture by these are meant the entrances and exits used by man through the ages the professor demonstrated the ar chitectural principles used by the various peoples of the world by telling of the kinds of doors which they made his entire talk was illustrated by slides the first recognizable step in architecture came when pre historic man first put a stone in frone of his cave to keep out the wild beasts the egyptians followed this up with doors to keep the tombs of the dead se cure their neighbors across the tigris euphrates valley built massive gateways with monster carvings before them for the purpose of frightening away the intruder from their cities all of these doors were built by making a framework consisting of upright props and a crossbeam over these the greeks used this method when they began to use doorways however the crossbeam was being dispensed with in many the society of industrial engineers he stat ed that he was particularly in terested in lehigh because ev ery spring representatives of his company are sent here to interview prospective employees in the graduating class and that many lehigh men now hold major executive positions in the ingersoll-rand company mr forrest's topic was or ganization he gave a brief outline of the organization of the ingersoll-rand company from the superintendent down in his talk he described the operation of one of the com pany's shops he said that this was a representative place to speak o as all of their shops are run in this same way the shop he described was one which made rock drills a stock product the two assis tant superintendents in this plant are in charge of two sep arate departments the expert or technical and the produc tion or routine the work of these two departments is inti mately allied mr forrest de scribed the expert department as the how and where and the production department as the when and how many the former deals with such sub jects as how a machine is to be made and which department shall have charge of its manu facture the routine department then decides how many machines will be made the date this num ber is to be ready and then ad justs the working of the plant so that the required quantity will be ready when they are called for this department also has to make arrangements with the metallurgical and heat treating departments about the materials to be used the pro duction department makes out route cards and instruction cards and then they start to work brown and white vainly try to push back the charges of coach struhldreher's warriors only to see the score rolled up in the blue and white's favor it was a game fight that the lehigh eleven put up but the weary bethlehemites were un able to outplay their opponents when they were faced by one fresh team after another for coach struhldreher one of knute • rockne's famous four horsemen used the tactics of his former mentor and sent a new team into the fray when ever the one on the field show ed signs of weakening villa nova used five teams saturday crippled as they were by the absence of several first string men because of injuries the brown and white eleven put all they had into stopping the march of the blue and white's combination but except for the first quarter were ineffective miller fell on the ball for lehigh davidowitz punted to mid-field but the main liners were forced to return the kick by another over the goal line lehigh made a first down on a pass and davidowitz crashed through tackle for an other after an exchange of punts lehigh gained the ball through a penalty on the 30 yard line after gaining 12 yards davidowitz tried a field but failed the quarter came to a close as villanova lined up on the 20-yard line villanova sent in a new team and mc andrews in two runs carried the ball to the brown and white 20-yard line a triple pass netted the first touchdown after receiving lehigh punted from failure to gain lehigh lost the ball on villanova's s yard line because of unneces sary roughness and the blue and white marched down the field for their second touch down gordon added the extra point villanova opened up an aerial attack which carried the ball over for the third time lehigh university calendar the lehigh harriers returned triumphantly from dickinson this week-end with victory tightly placed under their belts the score was 18-37 low score winning the men ran over a well marked course which was sev en and a half miles long a dickinson junior sherk who finished third started fast and set the pace for some distance however aitken and sames soon overtook him and these two brown and white men fin ished in a dead heat for first place they were pushed rath er hard by sherk over most of the course but proved their su periority by their finish lead ing him at the tape by seyenty five yards about five minutes later four more lehigh men captain chickering lang laird and gadd came in to gether to make the rest of le high's points the most interesting part of the run was the race between aitken sames and sherk the rest of lehigh's points were made comparatively easy for the other men did not push themselves in order to take the places they did however ait ken and sames put up a very good race and deserve much credit for taking first and sec ond aitken last year's cap tain has been low score man for two years the time made in the run was 40:13 2-5 which is exceptionally good for that course the fraternities at dickinson arranged for the entertain ment and sleeping facilities of the lehigh team during its stay there the lehigh soccer team lost a hard-fought game to the montclair athletic club eleven saturday by a 4-3 score the game was close throughout with good teamwork displayed by both teams lehigh started the scoring in the first quarter dcx bullard making the first goal and wag ner followed with one soon af ter however the montclair center forward retaliated soon in the second period when he scored two counters bullard accounted for the brown and white's last goal in the last canto on a beautiful me another is a pop ular campus questionnaire a different sent of questions has been compiled for each course this year poems by lehigh men and a well-written book review complete the outstand ing articles at a meeting of the class of 1931 last friday at noon a large list of candidates were nominated for election to fresh men offices although the din caused by so large a group of men attempting to make nom inations did for a time inter rupt the smoothness of the pro ceedings the business on hand was speedily dispatched the offices open for election are president vice-president secretary treasurer historian and sergeant-at-arms also sev en men are to be elected to the freshman cabinet elections will take place next tuesday at this time ballots will be placed in fred trafford's of fice where voting will continue from eight a m to five p m this will give every freshman the opportunity to vote at an hour that is convenient for him those nominated were pres ident melhorn savage butler friday afternoon as a send-off for the football team the stu dents lined up in back of the band at the flagpole each class in its proper order the band led the way down the campus to the stadium and the march continued up the field to the further goal posts halting here the cheer leaders led in a couple of cheers for the team ; the students then went up and sat down in the stands after several more cheers okey gave the peppers a snappy talk in which he asked for a continued and better support of the football team no matter whether it is a winning or a losing team okey claimed that if the student body gave its whole hearted support to all of its athletic teams these teams would fight and win for lehigh he based his belief on the idea that what makes a winning team is the fight and surgeons of the lehigh valley his topic will be surgery in general every one who attends this meeting is sure to enjoy it the pre-med society was started last year by a group of pre-med students under the guidance of dr r w hall for the purpose of discussing and solving the problems which arise in the minds of the em bryo doctors the past year has been a successful one in fulfill ing this aim the plans for the coming year include a series of monthly meetings clinics and trips to nearby hospitals the sur geons of these hospitals have been consulted and they prom ise their cooperation these
