many talks and athletic exhibitions — frosh in pajamas mechanicals addressed by mr reinicker on super power pool radio club hears address more support for arcadia among students urged television by mr fee only about half of stu dent body are members of organization much pep shown many purposes professor long addresses chems davidowitz stars shorty talks on leather oils and varnishes — authority in field first meeting the meeting of omicron del ta kappa held last thurs day night at the phi delta theta house was not only of importance to the society itself but to the students as well of the four things that were dis cussed during the evening three of them dealt with prob lems that have arisen since school has started the first matter to be consid ered was in regard to elections elections to o.d.k are based on a point system with points given for activity in athletics journalism society leadership non-athletics and scholarship the members must be active in more than one of these fields as a result of the election the following were chosen james c morrison kenton chicker ing and benjamin snavely these men were tapped be tween the halves of the swarth more game last saturday the next thing discussed dealt with the election of man agers for the various teams the fact was brought up that the managers for the spring sports have not been elected yet depending on action of the board of control this is an unusual delay as they are usu ally appointed in the preceding spring following this they turned to a discussion of spirit at games the princeton game being cited as a bad example the talk in the stands individual remarks to opposing players and the action of the cheerleaders in not returning compliments all reflect on the college the wrong way and cause a bad impres continued on page three all who were present at the first lehigh smoker of the year held in the lower gymnasium last friday evening under the auspices of the arcadia felt that it was a meeting that did much to bring forth and carry on the old lehigh fighting spir it to see the loyalty of the lehigh grads for their alma mater instilled in the freshmen that same spirit and made the undergraduates realize they must carry on the traditions of lehigh the frosh appeared in full force dressed in pajam as corn cob pipes and tobac co were furnished to all at the smoker tommy burke football captain took charge of the meeting he told just how much lehigh smokers usually meant to the students what their purpose was and what future smokers and pep meet ings are going to be held tom my then introduced bill bill meyer president of the senior class who made a brief speech dwelling on the facts that there is not enough pep in the stu dent body and that the cheer leaders are not showing as much co-ordination as they should at games billmeyer concluded by saying no lehigh team has even been known to quit and this year is no exception a series of mat stunts were then enacted by tracy 31 and wright 28 tracy performed well by diving over seven men kneeling on the mat continued on page four the cheer-leaders led in giv ing individual cheers for the coaches and members of the frosh gridders humble scarlet defeat syracuse but bow to cornell over week end booters divide in two matches defeat muhlenberg year lings by 19-13 in open ing fray in one of the greatest games ever played on taylor field lehigh went down to defeat after putting up the best game she has displayed this season fighting all the way and out classing her opponent through out the whole game except for a short period in the second quarter the home team was de feated by a few bad breaks that paved the way for a swarth more victory an unlucky fumble and a pass over the goal line gave our opponents their only scores which proved too much of a lead for the brown and white gridders to overcome due to the spectacular running of da vidowitz and the fight of the rest of the team lehigh scored a touchdown in the fourth quar ter and came within an ace of scoring another with only a few moments to play the team had its supporters wild with the hopes of a score only to lose the ball each time through some break davidowitz the sophomore halfback was easily the shin ing light of the game he scor ed every point for lehigh con tributing a place-kick a touch down point after touchdown six first downs four of which were made in succession be sides doing most of the pass ing and running the team in the last half he carried the ball continuously averaging a little over five yards for the total number of times he ran with the oval keefer mcguire and castle starred for the win ners keefer recovering a fum ble and running thirty yards for a touchdown the visitors won the toss and chose to receive they found they could gain little and kicked which resulted in an ex change of kicks with the ad vantage on their side nothing spectacular happened until da vidowitz received a punt and on a lateral pass flynn ran thirty yards before he was downed this put the ball in position for a kick which da vidowitz dropped over the goal continued on page two with approximately three hundred and fifty dollars yet to be raised the arcadia is pre paring to continue its early season campaign for member ship the money already col . lected represents only a little over half of the student body to accomplish the plans out lined for the year this organ ization must have one hundred • percent cooperation by the stu dents the arcadia is primarily a student organization receiving no help financially from the col lege but depending on the stu dents for this help the money obtained is used in various ways to further the interests of col lege activities and to pay for functions such as smokers pep lunches bonfires and so forth it is therefore important to have everyone pay the fifty cents required for membership the arcadia was founded in 1888 by richard harding dav is as a social club for the stu dents at lehigh in order to help further social activity in the years it has existed it has grown from its original society to become a student governing body and a contact between student and faculty the arcadia has a great number of responsibilities and on its shoulders rest the suc cess of the majority of college activities outside of the class room pep smokers lunches and meetings are sponsored by them as are the founder's day sports founder's day hop and dances throughout the year they also supervise student publications not with the idea of dictating a policy but to see that competitions are run fairly and to keep them from going in debt these are but a few of the many tasks the arcadia un dertakes to perform and it needs the help of everyone a member of this organiza tion is elected from each living group who is usually the head of that group every frater nity and every town group with a membership greater than twelve is eligible to have a rep resentative thus binding the whole college together through one governing body many injuries over week-end m . & c committee considers plays an extremely interesting ac count of developments in radio television since the world war was heard by those embryo scientists who attended the opening meeting of the lehigh radio club held last friday evening in the physics build ing in spite of the fact that the first smoker of the year was being held at the same time a capacity crowd filled the lecture hall c francis jenkins a scien tist and inventor of much note and the man chiefly responsible for the modern method of sta tionary and motion picture transmission by radio gave an interesting and edifying talk on his methods of television broad casting mr jenkins showed a ready wit that enabled him to keep his audience in good hu mor throughout the entire ad dress the lecture was illus trated by motion pictures which served to clarify many of the technical points brought out progress in transmitting pic tures via radio is advancing steadily mr jenkins declared it received its first great im petus several years ago when mr jenkins invented the pris matic ring this separates light rays coming from pictures into tiny slices so that these rays may later be transformed into independent electric im pulses and transmitted much the same as radio waves are sent out the process of ac complishing this transforma tion is of course quite com plicated it is done through the agency of a light-sensitive cell which offers a greater or lesser resistance to the passage of an electric current according to the intensity of the light which strikes it when the picture is received it forms itself as tiny lines making up a whole unit that is why lines are seen in a pic ture which has been sent thru the air in the beginning it was possible to produce only fifty lines to the inch this gave a poor picture later as the number of these lines was increased the quality of the picture increased until it was finally possible to produce a still picture that was almost as good as a true photograph however such results were not attainable in regard to mo tion pictures since the pro cess of photo transmission con sists mainly in breaking the whole picture into tiny parts which may be transformed into electricity and then later in re building these parts into a whole picture the time needed to broadcast a single picture was comparatively long six teen such pictures must be transmitted each second in or der to produce motion pictures thus a speeding-up process was needed this necessary speeding up of the process was accomplished only by the inven tion of a new type of prismatic ring this has become so suc cessful that mr jenkins ven tured to predict the wholesale transmission of motion pictures continued on page three the first meeting of the me chanical engineering society was held last friday evening at eight o'clock in the geology lecture room in williams hall mr thorn president of the so ciety presided ; and after a very short business meeting the as sembly was addressed by mr norman g reinicker general superintendent of the pennsyl vania power and light com pany mr reinicker spoke on the great super-power pool re pro fessor stuart in all about thirty-five attended president thorn called the meeting to order at eight o'clock and a short business meeting ensued members were remind ed that the annual dues of two with it might see what it is like professor stuart an nounced that there would be a meeting of the lehigh valley section of the american so ciety of mechanical engineers on tuesday october 18 at 8 o'clock at the hotel bethlehem lehigh students are always in vited at this meeting there will be a special entertainment and a good time is assured to all who attend a charge of one dollar will be made to cover expenses mr thorn then introduced mr reinicker as the speaker of the evening mr reinicker be gan his talk with the statement that what he was going to say during the course of his speech was being disclosed for the first time in substance the ad dress was as follows continued on page ttvo in preparation for this sup er-power combine engineers have worked out , load curves for each of continued on page three the work plans and hopes of one of lehigh's best-liked men professor j s long were revealed to a large gathering at the opening meeting of the chemical society held last thursday evening in the chem istry building professor long spoke on the subject of oil es pecially linseed oil before a crowd of over a hundred he has worked on this for many years having experimented on oil varnishes even before he graduated from college immediately after a few in troductory remarks by the president of the society shor ty was introduced his inter esting manner held the atten tion of his audience all through the lecture he spoke of his first work in the drying of lin seed oil which he undertook some years ago at that time he became interested in the pa tent leather industry linseed oil is a vital factor in this branch of shoe making for it is simply by coating leather with this oil that patent leather is produced at that early date the manufacture of patent leather was extremely unsuc cessful few chemists were en gaged in solving the problem and those men who were ac tive in it knew little about the chemistry involved almost immediately profes sor long found that the trou ble lay in the cooking of the oil preparatory to coating the lea ther in cooperation with his staff at lehigh he soon dis covered that during the cook ing of linseed oil its compli cated chemical formula was changed innumerable times the oil was useful in only com paratively few forms they therefore had to discover a means of producing the prod uct in those few forms after several revolutionary ideas and almost uncountable failures the desired results were pro duced it was then possible to produce a fairly good grade of patent leather however they were at a loss to account for the results of their experiments aided by several young research stu dents they attacked the prob lem from the strictly chemical viewpoint they began to man ufacture on a larger scale and because of painstaking calcula tions good results were ob tained gradually it became possible to produce patent lea ther that would not crack the industry became a very impor tant one supplying the world with about thirty million pairs of shoes annually the re search students who aided in the work entered the industry and became its leaders the manufacture of patent leather is controlled to about sixty per cent by lehigh men continued on page four having accomplished this difficult feat professor long was not a llowed to rest on his laurels since the problems which apply to patent leather making also apply in a great a much improved lehigh soccer team returned sunday with an even break against two eastern intercollegiate oppon ents cornell and syracuse flashing a consistent attack they overcame the syracuse team 3-1 but although playing an excellent game they lost a close contest to cornell 2-0 three hours after disembark ing from the sleeper the le high team donned their studs and took the at the opening meeting of the chemical society held last thursday evening in the chem istry building professor long spoke on the subject of oil es pecially linseed oil before a crowd of over a hundred he has worked on this for many years having experimented on oil varnishes even before he graduated from college immediately after a few in troductory remarks by the president of the society shor ty was introduced his inter esting manner held the atten tion of his audience all through the lecture he spoke of his first work in the drying of lin seed oil which he undertook some years ago at that time he became interested in the pa tent leather industry linseed oil is a vital factor in this branch of shoe making for it is simply by coating leather with this oil that patent leather is produced at that early date the manufacture of patent leather was extremely unsuc cessful few chemists were en gaged in solving the problem and those men who were ac tive in it knew little about the chemistry involved almost immediately profes sor long found that the trou ble lay in the cooking of the oil preparatory to coating the lea ther in cooperation with his staff at lehigh he soon dis covered that during the cook ing of linseed oil its compli cated chemical formula was changed innumerable times the oil was useful in only com paratively few forms they therefore had to discover a means of producing the prod uct in those few forms after several revolutionary ideas and almost uncountable failures the desired results were pro duced it was then possible to produce a fairly good grade of patent leather however they were at a loss to account for the results of their experiments aided by several young research stu dents they attacked the prob lem from the strictly chemical viewpoint they began to man ufacture on a larger scale and because of painstaking calcula tions good results were ob tained gradually it became possible to produce patent lea ther that would not crack the industry became a very impor tant one supplying the world with about thirty million pairs of shoes annually the re search students who aided in the work entered the industry and became its leaders the manufacture of patent leather is controlled to about sixty per cent by lehigh men continued on page four having accomplished this difficult feat professor long was not a llowed to rest on his laurels since the problems which apply to patent leather making also apply in a great a much improved lehigh soccer team returned sunday with an even break against two eastern intercollegiate oppon ents
