bethlehem wanderers in practice game on le high field in opener of taylor hall dropped to 1.73 and a year later the lowest av erage in the four years was re ported it was 1.16 the best four-year record in the entire college is now held by section a of taylor hall although its 2.270 is followed closely by the 2.245 of leonard hall these two groups have been in first place five times leonard organization recently formed latin club petitions na tional honorary for membership the opening exercises inaug urating lehigh's sixty-second year were held last wednesday afternoon in the packer mem orial chapel which was filled to capacity with the entire enter ing class and a large proportion of the upper-classmen faculty and guests the exercises were opened with an organ prelude by t edgar shields university or ganist and a prayer was offer ed by dr gateson the univer sity chaplain president rich ards then announced the names and departments of the new members of the faculty and continued with his address of welcome he chose as the sub ject of his talk hero wor ship and used the exploits and character of colonel lindbergh as his principle illustration continued on page six in his talk dr richards cited the reasons and the pur pose of a college education and especially the work that was to be done at lehigh he told of the large number of improve ments which were made at le high last year his contention was that hero-worship plays a large part in the development of youth ahd that it might be statuary adds to war memorial figures of greek dietics beautify the interior of administration bldg registration figures as com puted by the dean's office up to five o'clock wednesday evening showed that 1323 had complet ed their registration this com pares with a total of 1357 for the same time last year a number of men completed re gistration yesterday and this afternoon but these figures were not available at the time of going to press men wearing frosh caps number only 401 so far this year this figure is approxi mately one hundred less than the number in regulations on the opening day last september however included in the class of a year ago were about eigh ty students who had flunked out of other schools the pres ent 400 are men fresh from preparatory schools and have no scholastic black marks hang ing over from previous college years of the 401 the engin eering courses registered 235 the arts and science college 91 and the business college 85 in addition to these fresh men it is estimated that there are nearly one hundred men entering the university with advanced standing thus bring ing the total number of enter ing students up to approximate ly 500 continued on page five the enrollment of upperclass men by curricula up to wed tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock on lehigh field the university soccer team will in augurate the 1927 season with a clash with the bethlehem wanderers a strong local elev en annually this is a practice game and last year the wan derers won by a 3-1 score continued on page two coach harry f carpenter who is a former star goalie of the bethlehem steel team and a prominent official and who has been mentor of lehigh teams in this scotch game for a number of seasons has been working with a squad of thirty five aspirants for two weeks and hopes to put a fairly strong combination on the field the first week of practice was de voted exclusively to kicking passing heading the ball and to the other rudiments of the game the men received their first taste of scrimmage mon day and have experienced some every day since that date car penter has given all the candi dates an opportunity in these sessions and has experimented with the players in different po sitions in an endeavor to find a smooth-working combination as this is written the opening lineup is so highly uncertain that only a list of the foremost lehigh gridders practice daily harriers expect successful year five members of last year's team already in training fifty men reporting daily for practice — coach tate confident the lehigh gridders swing into action against the st john's aggregation tomorrow for the initial fray of the sea son the big brooklyn boys come to bethlehem hoping to repeat their 7-0 victory of last year however the last week of practice has done much to ward making the brown team impregnable an able coaching staff under the leadership of percy wen dell is producing a team which is scheduled to score many suc cesses for the brown and white charley eastman the line coach is gradually produc ing a line which promises to be airtight ned martin a strong man at end last year has re turned to coach the wing men pat pazzetti the ever-popular alumnus made an appearance during the past week to aid in training the backs while cap tain hyde and dot mellinger are developing a scrub team which should play an import ant part in perfecting the var sity's attack the team which will very probably start tomorrow's game will consist of very few veter ans burke tubby miller simes kirkpatrick mullaney and ben and jack levitz are the only men who have repre sented lehigh on the gridiron before b levitz has been shifted to the line and is play ing right guard galanos waldman flynn davidow and van comprise the newer men who will very likely play tomor row a reserve team many of which will see action tomor row is composed of adams bennett johnston trantum a lehr miller moore blackmar brennan p lehr and wilson tubby miller may be kept out because of a broken nose in this event his place will very likely be taken by blackmar daly has been out because of a broken arm and robre ui . has suffered slight injuries however the toughening pro cess is now about finished and most of the men are as hard as nails first issue of burr out soon after a week of preliminary training the frosh gridders have started the real work of the fall with intensive daily practice including frequent scrimmages with an average of fifty-five men reporting daily coach austie tate feels confi dent that he can pick an eleven that will put up some real op position against any team on the schedule continued on page two blocking men back pennsylvania — good backfield but poor line yale squad of 120 out but many veterans gone harvard — strongest of the big three with few losses and good sophomores dartmouth — only one line man backs fair prospects south alabama — but ne letter back returned good material how ever georgia tech — fair pros pects louisianna — fair prospects tennessee — strongest in the south with nine veterans back georgia — about as good as usual vanderbilt — winning tradi tion but not much material mid-west minnesota — doped to win big ten lots of veterans purdue — must develope line otherwise rather cornmemmoration that fills it the large silent space peopled by silent statues that carry one back to civilization that revered bravery loyalty and manhood holds also the spirits of those lehigh men statuary fittingly contributes to that end the major figure in the center is winged vic tory shaped by the greeks to commemmorate their victory at samothrace its original is now in the louvre at paris the winged victory or the nike victory as it more com monly known is a female rid ing along at the prow of a ship crying out to the winds the tid ings of victory the figure back of her and to the right is mars the god of war cupid is at his feet having assuaged his war like nature by bringing to his mind the beautiful goddess of love and the figure of min erva goddess of wisdom stands at the left of the winged vie the aspirants for the cross country team are daily going through their long grind in pre paration for what promises to be a strenuous season altho as yet the harriers have re usually successful season in view of previous experience and present indications it would seem as if the letter-men cap tain chickering aitken sames lange and roberts can be counted upon to make an im pressive showing in addition to these men fiscus and fine of last year's squad are hard at work as are girdler and laird who were on the fresh man track team last year as yet practically no one else has reported and - coach kanaly interesting statistics relating to the scholastic attainments of living groups have been com piled from the four-year-old files preserved in the dean's of fice formerly these records were made public at stated in tervals and no attempt was made to plot the curves over a period of time longer than one semester however the facts gathered from a study of the last eight terms reveal nu merous startling conditions the first significant conclu sion is that non-fraternity liv ing groups maintain a consis tently higher scholastic average than do fraternities for the four years taylor hall leon ard hall and price hall the three dormitories have an aver age of 2.137 out of a possible 5.00 the town group which includes at least five hundred students is slightly under this average with 1.933 over the same period the fraternities twenty-five in . number this figure does not include new or local fraternities have an av erage of 1.649 another fact which was found to be true throughout the entire period was that the non fraternity groups with the ex ceptions of price hall section c taylor hall and the town group were always above the average for the entire univer sity these three groups each fell below that average once in the eight terms among the fraternities lambda chi alpha and sigma alpha mv are the only ones with records ap proaching those of the dormi tories lambda chi alpha was above the university average seven times out of the possible eight and sigma alpha mv had the honor six times they are the only fraternities never to have fallen below the fra ternity average their nearest competitor is the phi sigma delta lodge which has been above the university average four times a comparison of the aver ages of the general college and the fraternities shows that the general college rating has al ways been higher than that of the fraternity groups the difference has varied between 25 and 17 and strikes the average at just a shade over 20 for both groups higher scholar ship has been maintained dur ing the second term of every year than in the first period and the progress has been greater on the part of the fra ternities the highest average ever at tained was won by leonard hall during the second term of the 1923-1924 school year when it was rated at 2.89 theta delta chi however was close upon this score with 2.81 a record among fraternities it was during this same term that the lowest non-fraternity score was turned in when section c a petition recently filed in the dean's office would add to the organizations on the cam pus one of a strictly classical type it comes from a group of juniors who organized a latin society last may and have since acted favorably upon a resolution to petition eta sig ma phi national honorary clas sical fraternity for admission as the twenty-eighth chapter of that organization the local society is known as the colle gium romanum and is open on ly to students who have main tained an exceptionally com mendable record in the latin courses at lehigh the petition now in the dean's hands if granted by the proper faculty committee and favorably received by eta sig ma phi will widen the inter ests of the collegium romanum so as to include in membership eligible greek students the latin and greek faculty would also be eligible as members this latin club has arranged its program and drawn up such conditions for membership as are expected to rank in with the other course honoraries now established on the campus such as the alexander hamilton and robert w blake societies for membership a candidate must hold a b average for the first year of latin at le high and must be a student in the latin department at the time of his election these'con ditions will likewise be imposed
