five cents victory clinches series for th c raritan collegians finals in track and field meet held tomorrow alumni dinner in honor of james ward packard is opening event freshman handbook there will be an important meeting of all competitors in drown hall tonight at 7:30 all competitors are urged to be present four men received prizes for orations in recent contest brown and white out to win second game and thus even count 1927 epitome there are still about twen ty-five copies of the 1927 epitome last year's annual to be sold these are now on sale at the supply bureau for two dollars and a half fine speakers lehigh well represented in intercollegiates being staged at union heavy slugging maroon favored sword & crescent honors announced penn state meets lacrosse team two divisions squad of ten new members are con nected with many campus activities comparative records show both teams to be evenly matched close contest fifteen men at the last college meeting the sword and crescent sen ior honorary society tapped the fifteen most outstanding men of the junior class these men are pledged by the society be cause of the outstanding con tribution to the progress of lehigh its second game of the season against lehigh at the winner's ball park on wed nesday afternoon the victory clinched the annual series for the raritan collegians although in a slugging mood collectively lehigh pounded the ball individually of the eleven hits which rattled off the blud geons of the brown and white sluggers eight were allotted to hayes and talbert both play ers banged out three singles and a double apiece the other three singles were distributed the scarlet jersey ed fence busters found the southpaw slants of brady for ten safe pokes of various sizes ir win's trip around the sacks in the initial canto proved the ruthian clout of the afternoon in spite of the ten hits rut gers would have emerged on the smaller end of the score had the lehigh infield function ed properly five glaring mis plays at the critical moments paved the way for the majority of the new brunswick tallies as it was rutgers would have scored oftener had a few of their hits come at the oppor tune moments with the two lafayette games as the only remaining contests on the schedule le high faces two tough week-end assignments the eastonians with one shut-out victory to their credit will be a hard combination to beat unless the brown and white players im continued on page four with the coming of june plans for the most impressive commencement ever held at lehigh have been formulated contrary to general opinion the exercises this year will be held in packer memorial church as has been customary instead of having an outdoor commencement on friday noon june tenth the board of directors of the alumni association will meet at the bethlehem club friday night will witness the alumni dinner this year in honor of james ward packard 84 at the hotel bethlehem as mr packard is ill at the hospital in cleveland telephone connections will be maintained between the hotel and the hospital to en able him to hear everything that goes on the class of 77 will hold their fiftieth reunion that night and will be ad dressed by dr george w wickersham 77 attorney-gen eral of the united states dur ing the administration of pres ident taft saturday will be the official alumni day the alumni lun cheon will be held at noon in drown hall and the reunion classes will parade at two-thir ty the class of 87 has pre sented the university with a university flag and an ameri can flag exact duplicates in size and material which will be carried at the head of the pro cession there will be a la crosse game in the afternoon and the reunion banquets will continued on page four seniors win in lacrosse game the lehigh lacrosse team meets perm state tomorrow af ternoon on the upper field both teams have about the same record to date and will be rath er evenly matched promising a keenly-contested game the nittany stickmen have won but two of their games they trim med lafayette 11-1 and the crescent a a c of syracuse 17-2 syracuse defeated the lions 7-3 and cornell took the bunch into camp by a 5-2 count the perm state team of this year is much stronger than that of last year having a stronger offense and defense with a fast running attack and greater scoring power it seems that syracuse and cornell re ceived all the breaks in defeat ing state according to the new york papers ernie paul former syracuse assistant la crosse mentor is the new lion coach he will undoubtedly send some of the sophomore and junior men into action so as to develop them for the coming year continued on page four the brown and white team is rounding nicely into shape good hard strenuous practice has been the policy this week the ignomious defeat at the hands of the navy has not been forgotten it will serve only as college lecture plans are made epitome board elects officers the lehigh baseball team will travel to eastern tomorrow to attempt to revenge last satur day's defeat and thus even the count in the present three game series it will be remem bered that the brown and white team last year won the series taking two out of three games after dropping the first game the home team is fav ored to win tomorrow due to the fact that they already have defeated the visitors this year and also because their record of eight wins out of their last nine games is more impressive than the brown and white record lafayette won from n y u 7 to 6 last wednesday while lehigh was dropping another game to rutgers by a 7 to 4 count however the lehigh team has been steadily improv ing and if they show a little more hitting power in the sec ond game they may surprise the maroon the first game was a pitching bout between hesse and yeisley with the lat ter having the better of the ar gument although hesse pulled himself out of many bad holes which were due to the each received one-half of the sum of first and second prizes or 20.00 each the third prize was won by j w flory the subject of c p berman's oration was the life and leadership of theodore roose velt and he brought to his speech patriotic interest and a sympathetic study of this great american statesman describ ing his colorful political car eer and the vigor and far-reach ing effect of his later national career both theme and treat ment were handled vonschilling the next speak er spoke on prohibition he first advanced the theory that drinking is not in itself inher ently evil that it becomes so only when indulged in to ex cess and that to prohibit it is unconstitutional in addition the prohibition amendment lends strength to the anti everything tendencies of some modern reformers and is there fore bad to remedy the situa tion the speaker suggested a special nation-wide referendum extended to all literate males the cost of which was to be de frayed by the anti-prohobition interests the theme of middleton's oration was disarmament he discussed the question of na tional armaments pro and con and urged disarmament as the natural policy of an enlighten ed state popular opinion in the matter of armaments should be influenced by education so that the blessings of future freedom from the burden of ar maments might be secured levy discussed college ideal ism he showed how the fresh man is taken from the more or less sheltered influence of his earlier life and subjected to the unsettling influence of college life where apparently ideals are lacking bewildered by this he seeks to maintain a harsh exterior in order to cover up his real feelings and gradually from the disorganized frag ments of his earlier idealism builds up a new code which is to fit him for the larger interesting of the year ef forts are being made to secure bertrand russell the noted british novelist who will be in america some time next year as one of the speakers sena tor borah will in all probability be invited to speak before the student body as will also pro fessor andre moritz a french army officer sent by the french government to harvard to train the harvard contingent during the world war on the list of speakers is a lehigh graduate and there is a possi bility that judge ben lindsay will be added coach morris kanaly and manager al shonk left last night for schenectady with a squad of ten track and field ath letes who represent the best that lehigh has to offer and who are determined in part to compensate for the disastrous dual meet season which the team has just experienced by making a creditable showing in the fifteenth annual champion ships of the middle atlantic states collegiate athletic as sociation the title meet the preliminaries of which were staged this afternoon the finals being scheduled for tomorrow is being conducted under the auspices of union college this year although the record of the brown and white aggregation is not as good as that of last season when the results of two of the tfour dual meets were victories the bethlehem colle gians should make as good if not a better showing in the in tercollegiates last year a team composed mostly of soph omores took seventh place be hind swarthmore haverford n y u union alfred and rutgers all of these schools have strong squads again but lehigh should compare favor ably for coach kanaly rath er than team strength had a group of stars this season and they should constitute a well-balanced combination in a titular meet in which only the highest-class performers can hope to score haverford which has trim med swarthmore and lafay ette this year and rutgers mid dle three champions and win ner of quadrangular meet with n y u manhattan and c c n v last week should be the favorites for the team trophy on the basis of their perfor mances swarthmore union and n y u have strong squads and should give the others a good battle alfred m a s c a a cross country cham pion is strong in the distance runs and has several other stars to keep her in the running it does not seem likely that la fayette will outscore the brown and white representatives de spite the maroon's victory last last season when the results of two of the tfour dual meets were victories the bethlehem colle gians should make as good if not a better showing in the in tercollegiates last year a team composed mostly of soph omores took seventh place be hind swarthmore haverford n y u union alfred and rutgers all of these schools have strong squads again but lehigh should compare favor ably for coach kanaly rath er than team strength had a group of stars this season and they should constitute a well-balanced combination in a titular meet in which only the highest-class performers can hope to score haverford which has trim med swarthmore and lafay ette this year and rutgers mid dle three champions and win ner of quadrangular meet with n y u manhattan and c c n v last week should be the favorites for the team trophy on the basis of their perfor mances swarthmore union and n y u have strong squads and should give the others a good battle alfred m a s c a a cross country cham pion is strong in
