review business circula tion and advertising manag erships are the open offices interscholastic track meet here new organization of arcadia made twenty-five schools will take part in annual affair officers and committees elected and several matters discussed although the varsity and freshmen track squads journey down the river to easton to morrow lehigh will be the scene of much ' activity from 10 30 in the morning until ear ly eve when the pennsylvania interscholastic track and field meet district no 1 is staged on the upper field the 1926 meet was held at muhlenberg continued on page four so great has been the inter est in this annual affair that the officials were compelled to divide the schools into two divi sions class a having a stu dent body of 250 or more while class b schools have less than 250 twenty-five schools have signified their intentions of competing by sending in 268 entries the increased growth is easily typified by comparing the 28 entries which represent ed both classes last year with the 40 that class a has list the first meeting of the new arcadia was held in drown hall monday evening at which time organization of the new body was effected and several matters of importance were brought up the most impor tant thing which came before the meeting was an appeal for aid to the suffering people of the flooded areas in the missip pi valley the matter was left to a committee appointed to make the collections with the heads of living groups responsible for his own group no set amount was agreed upon but it was de cided that fifty cents would be a fair donation for the average student it doesn't seem that this cause requires much ad vertising as it is recognized as the greatest tragedy that has continued on page six tennis team on extensive trip new publication very successful difficult matches to be played with n y u harvard and yale initial issue of lehigh re view favorably re ceived by students tomorrow is an important day for lehigh university's track and field team for it is scheduled to journey down the river to easton for a clash with lafayette on march field at eight o'clock not only will this meet determine the track feud between the arch rivals for 1927 but it will bring to close the so-far unsuccessful dual meet seasons of each so that a victory for either would be significant lehigh rooters are anxious to see a repetition of last year's 70-56 victory the first over the maroon in eleven years to venture a prediction of the outcome of a meeting be tween the brown and the mar oon in any sporting event is always hazardous but it seems relatively safe to prophesy a win for coach morris kanaly in tomorrow's competition comparative scores with rut gers middle three cham pions by virtue of victories ov er both the easton and beth lehem aggregations favor the brown and white lehigh lost the season's opener to the rari tanians 70 1-2 to 55 1-2 but the team showed marked im provement in successive de feats administered by swarth more and n y u two of the strongest squads in the middle atlantic states collegiate ath letic association last satur day at new brunswick coach bernie wefers scarlet men continued on page six the lehigh lacrosse team left this afternoon for annapolis to engage the middies tomorrow in what promises to be a really interesting game of lacrosse last saturday while the brown and white were van quishing the tough stevens team navy was meeting defeat at the hands of johns hopkins this latter defeat came as a surprise to the sport fans who are acquainted with the mar vellously strong lacrosse teams that the naval academy is wont to develop this year the navy has a good bunch of stick-wielders as usual they always seem to be in the best of condition and practically tireless as they romp back and forth the whole length of the field the le high defense will have to be wary tomorrow if they hope to keep the navy attack in check however the victory last week has given the brown and white team a world of con fidence and they fully expect to accomplish big things at an napolis several strenuous practices have been in order this week the twelve has found itself activities captain john walter gisriel jr has been credited with a new le high record in the shot put as a result of an outstanding performance in the swarth more dual meet here on may 4 the brown and white re port of the meet in the is sue dated may 6 simply stat ed that in defeating baker in the shot put the lehigh captain came dangerously close to the university rec ord his winning toss was 38 feet 11 inches which proxi mates the record put made by bailey 14 which is listed in the trophy room at 40 feet 1-2 inch howev er after gisriel had com pleted the regulation six throws and been declared the victor he announced his in tention to try to eclipse the thirteen-year old standard cal accomplished his pur pose when he put the six teen-pound iron ball 40 feet 1 1-2 inches coach kanaly has accepted the new mark but official action on the part of the board of control is necessary before the tower ing senior is awarded a ma jor-sport letter this is the second of bailey's records that captain gisriel has dis placed and he therefore mer its recognition as the fore most brown and white weight man of all time last year cal set a new record of 130 feet 5 1-8 inches in the discus throw interfraternity council meets with the lehigh-lafayette baseball feud in the offing the brown and white batsmen are out to repeat their victory of last year in the former con flict lehigh won the series by winning two out of the three games after dropping the first game this year the maroon nine looms up as one of the most formidable teams that le high has met this season la fayette has just finished a winning streak of six consec utive victories having lost their last game to the strong navy team when they went down to defeat with a score of 4-7 , the maroon has also to its advantage a victory over rutgers to whom lehigh lost earlier in the season the last few games which the brown and white team has played have shown a decided improvement on their part a very creditable showing was made against the strong penn sylvania nine while perm has since then handed rutgers a stiff defeat by the high score > of 11-2 without a doubt le high is playing a 100 per cent better game than earlier in the season which lowers lafay ette's apparent superiority in having beaten teams that have defeated lehigh continued on page six in the persons of captain grube kirkleski and mcgar vey bell and koch lafayette has five of last year's letter men back on the team the first three of whom are football men and heavy sluggers with the bat heavy and consistent hitting seems to be their tour of three of the larger cities of new jer sey including patterson east orange and newark the trip was successful from every point of view the reception received each night was unusual and unexpected as it is very difficult for an organization of this kind to leave a good im pression with everyone the club made its debut on thursday evening in patterson where it played in the auditor ium of the newly erected pub lic school no 13 the musi cal clubs had the honor of be ing the first organization to play in this school merited ap plause was received by the clubs after each number espe cially the mandolin symphony orchestra who found it neces sary to repeat the song of the vagabonds at the end of the concert an informal dance was held after the performance for which david fluharty's vanities . orchestra furnished the music many people stayed for the dance which ended at about twelve midnight the following afternoon a special concert was broadcast from station w a a m thru the studio of the chamber of commerce of the oranges mrs m b savage past president of the art center of the oranges welcomed the club to east or ange over the radio at this time \ from the many reports received the concert was heard by a large audience the uni versity ramblers then played for a tea dance at the wom ans club in the evening the regular program was given at the womans club a large au dience composed of many alum ni and friends of the univer sity was present the clubs made a deep impression on ev eryone present due to the ex ceptional quality of the music some people ventured to ad mit that they never thought a concert of this kind could be so interesting and entertaining many people were dressed in evening clothes and the dance which followed the concert took on the appearance of a formal affair that evening the members of the club were entertained at the homes of many of the residents of east orange continued on page six the climax of the trip was reached saturday evening when the clubs played to an audience of 1500 people in the ball room of the mosque theatre the concert went over exceptional ly well and in view of this fact the manager of the theatre is trying to obtain the services of the clubs for next year many beautiful girls marked a very colorful dance after the perfor mance a more successful eve ning could not have been pos the tennis team is about to take its most extensive and most strenuous trip of the sea son the team leaves bethle hem tomorrow morning and will not return until the middle of next week after playing matches in new york and new england this is the only trip of several days duration which the team makes all season and it hopes to come home with a fine record although all the matches will be very difficult the first match is with new york university at new york tomorrow n y u has not been defeated all season but the calibre of their opponents has not been as high as that of the brown and white so that it should be a lehigh victory sunday and monday the team has a rest well merited by rea son of the strenuous program of this week with four match es in as many days in the meantime they will first three match es the swarthmore man turn the honorary society sword and crescent pledged fifteen men from the present junior class at the college meeting on thursday the men honored by the society were william b billmeyer thomas f burke eugene f o'callaghan wil liam m heilman donald b straub george w fearnside keriton chickering francis l clayton walter s buck john r denise edward w mc govern james c morrison neil j sullivan leonard m horton and walter m hand the society is composed en tirely of seniors and election of new members takes place in the spring from the junior class to become a member of sword and crescent is one of the biggest honors which le high can bestow upon her un dergraduates all of the men pledged have fulfilled the qual ifications for membership election of officers for next year as well as several other important matters took place at the last interfraternity coun cil meeting held wednesday night in drown hall the men selected as next year's executives are purdy president ; homer vice-presi dent wright secretary and horton treasurer continued on page three two men mercur and horn berger representing the lehigh coal and navigation company were present at the meeting they outlined a method by which the fraternities could cut down their coal bill one half by having grates install ed in the various houses a more economical kind of coal can be
