discussed in his usual clean-cut way general scientific and economic ques tions this club is an organi zation that binds together the local chapters of various nation al organizations of engineers the report of the nominating committee was heard and the new officers inducted into of fice thomas e butterfield professor of heat engineering at lehigh was elected vice-pres ident before the main talk of the evening short talks were heard from various members of the club and among those who spoke were professors butter field beaver fuller and lar kin of lehigh mr parsons talk was entitled is it twi light or dawn he presented a hasty panorama of history from the beginning and gave his ideas on some of the possi bilities of what the future holds in store probably the high light of his address was his discussion on materialism in the first place he argued that material ism is here to stay in spite of the most vigorous protests of some people and he stated fur ther that it is far better than the superstitions and half-bak ed theories of yesterday he added because it emanates from the head is no reason why it is lacking in heart in fact we would be quite lost today if it were not for this great force which demands that we give first consideration to life's real ities he went so far as to say that materialism will find remedies for many of the existing ills of today he predicts that this great force will eventually make the church more crowded than the theatre and will change ed ucational methods so that pro fessors will receive more pay than bricklayers and carpen ters in his discussion he continued on page four lehigh university calendar new annualßelay carnival staged coming from behind in the seventh the perm batsmen humbled the b & w on frank lin field last wednesday after noon although lehigh gar nered twice as many hits as perm loose fielding and failure to bunch the hits was respon sible for the last minute defeat knoblauch started his first game of the year for perm and for three innings his good pitch ing held lehigh scoreless how ever in the fourth fifth and sixth he weakened and allowed two runs to cross the plate each inning when stanford relieved him in the seventh le high was leading 6-5 but stan ford's splendid twirling put an end to further brown and white tallies this victory is the sixth consecutive one of the season for stanford who has yet to be defeated hesse pitched a good game for lehigh but loose fielding detracted from his chances for a victory and the failure of the brown and white to bunch their hits of which they had thirteen to perm's seven was the principal reason for defeat the team although not playing up to the standard of the franklin and marshall game continued to show a vast im provement upon early season performances • continued on page four annual moving-up day successful last saturday dickinson's baseball nine went down to de feat at the hands of the le high batsmen the rather one-sided battle was staged on taylor field and the final score was 12-2 the hard and timely hitting of the home team paved the , way for an overwhelming vic tory dickinson started at bat but after one strikeout and two put-outs the south mountain eers came to the plate and started off with a bang flynn was put out by an infield hit rosenson followed and was walked due to the wild pitching of garrison the visiting pitch er and in a moment he stole second jack hayes the brown and white captain with a per fect swing knocked a long hit over the right field fence scor ing a home run nevins got to first and o'callaghan sacrificed bringing nevins to second base talbert stepped up to the plate and seeing his opportunity hit a pretty two-base hit which al lowed nevins to come in bram ble the lehigh shortstop was next at the plate he knocked the ball for an easy three-base hit forcing talbert home which made the four runs of the first inning the game ran on about the same way throughout nevins knocking out a homer in the next frame there is no doubt that dickinson was conquered by a better team the main trouble with the visitors seemed to be the lack of good pitchers three substitutes were sent in • for relief on the other hand praise may be handed to brady the lehigh southpaw altho he was touched for ten hits he was effective in the pinches the improved fielding of the brown and white infield was demonstrated when they allow ed only two runs to be scored during the whole game in spite of the many times they were threatened the team as a whole deserves credit for the improvement they have shown since the beginning of the sea son the track team received its third and most decisive setback of the season when it met the strong and well-balanced new york university squad on the latter's home grounds at ohio field new york city on sat urday the 82-44 trimming came as quite a surprise to the brown and white cohorts who expected a much closer result after the impressive showing which kanaly's men made against the championship swarthmore team earlier in the week the defeat can again be attri buted to a weakness in substi tute material lehigh held its own in victories brown and white men winning seven of the fourteen events but the violet squad accounted for ten and a half seconds and twelve thirds while the kanaly en tries were almost supreme in the track events they were no ticeably weak in the field le high runners won all but two races but don straub was the only wearer of the brown to finish first in a non-track com petition coach yon elling's proteges made clean sweeps in the mile run and the javelin and discus throws and scored eight out of a possible nine points in the pole vault in defeat lehigh supporters can point with pride to the stellar performances of a num ber of their athletes the out standing competitor and the only double-winner of the dual meet was a visitor frank clay ton speed merchant of the bethlehem aggregation clay ton was a victor by more than five yards in the 100-yard dash in fast time and also won a close decision in the furlong which was run around avturn three other lehigh runners bill billmeyer ken chickering ex hibitions of stick-wielding yet witnessed in bethlehem the score was 9 to 4 the second largest score rolled up by a brown and white team in sev eral years although lehigh met defeat at the hands of rut gers and n y u it eradicated both those ' losses by winning from stevens who has already beaten n y u and tied rut gers it was an interesting game to watch both teams played a hard and clean brand of ball and the penalties for roughness were few and far be tween the day was ideal and there was a huge crowd in at tendance stevens threw a scare into the home team within the first minute of play by annexing a goal but lehigh's equalizer was not long in forthcominng once the brown and white were in the lead they were never ser iously threatened stevens scored their second goal and assumed the lead for a few minutes but before the half was over lehigh had scored three more goals leaving the count 4 to 2 in the second half the le high attack proved an effective scoring machine their passing game was practically flawless and they repeatedly brought the ball within shooting distance five of their attempts were successful although they did miss numerous wonderful chances to score by inaccurate shooting stevens rallied for a moment and tallied two goals within the space of two min utes but this marked the end of their scoring continued on page four both the attack and the de fense are to be commended for their excellent playing ; the loose method of guarding that was so prevalent in the rutgers game was completely gone charlie lattig deserves the greater part of the credit however because it is by his careful and patient guidance that the team has fi nally come into its own the type of game that was exhibit ed last saturday is the type of game that charlie has been
