classes to battle for track honors georgetown to be next opponent varsity victor in second contest university dance price five cents vol xxvii no 47 junior banquet lacrosse season to open with navy entries must be in by 12 noon tomorrow meet to be held at 2:30 p.m nine to journey to washington for first game away johnson and wilson probable battery navy team fast brown and white team's first game to be staged at annapolis tomorrow afternoon tomorrow night drown hall snyder's orchestra of easton 8.30 p.m subscription 1.00 tonight kurtz restaurant good speeches all out 21 7-oo p.m subscription 3.50 lehigh has large number of vet erans initial contest will show the relative ability of men score 11=3 brown and white batters find wolf easy to hit mathag and beck lead in slugging alpha chi rho defeats phi sigma kappa moravian prep beat frosh by close margin flurries of snow interrupt game and pitchers have hard work lees and pfeiffer show form seven inning game lost to beth lehemites with a 6=5 score fincke and redline high scorers bush plays well at guard the freshman baseball team suf fered defeat at the hands of the moravian prep nine on wednes day afternoon by the score of 6-5 in seven innings the freshmen took the lead in the second inning on two walks and a two-base hit by comrie another run was add ed in the third when craig circled the paths then the moravian prep team scored a run when the umpire made a bad decision at the plate comrie opened the fourth with a walk and came all the way home when yott poled a drive out to deep center making a home run this brought the score to 5-1 then a number of substitutes were put in and before anyone knew it the score was tied at 5-5 on many errors the winning run came in the last inning when a two-base hit advanced a moravian prep man to the plate ... davis and conroy were the twirlers for the 23 team davis pitched three steady innings and when he retired in favor of conroy it looked like a certain victory then conroy took up the pitching burden and although he fanned a number of his opponents his sup port was far from good and ac counted for the defeat musical clubs practice for new york concert the brown and white baseball team will play their first game away from home this season when they meet the strong georgetown nine at washington tomorrow afternoon . judging from the com mendable work shown in the two games already played lehigh will have a good chance to win al though georgetown has a well-de veloped team this year as has been shown by their victory over holy cross last saturday by a score of 7 to 3 ; and they will be no mean rivals for the brown and white diamond artists the georgetown nine is very good in the batting department managing to secure twelve hits in the holy cross game while reynolds georgetown s pitcher allowed only five hits and struck out eight men the blue and gray team has a fast infield and their garden work is excellent the lehigh batters are compar ably good mathag yap and beck showing up best at the plate like wise the brown and white nine has a strong infield and outfield while dave pfeiffer showed up well on the mound in the game with lebanon valley last wednesday the line-up for the georgetown game will probably be the same as that last wednesday with a pos sible change in the pitcher's box swede johnson will probably start the game with pfeiffer or lees as a substitute the tentative line-up follows : lehigh position georgetown rote 2b ormsby donovan ss maloney mathag cf duack beck 3b walsh yap lb h sulivan savaria if j sulivan douglass rf cilhanley wilson c kenyon johnson p reynolds mustard and cheese chorus still incomplete in the only league game played this week the alpha chi rho five defeated the phi sigma kappa ag gregation on tuesday afternoon by the score of 26-14 fincke alpha chi rho's little forward was the star of the game caging seven field goals and securing enough points alone to equal the losers score j a gardy secured eight points on three double-deckers and two fouls while j w gardy got four points on two baskets redline was the big scorer for phi sigma kappa getting away often enough to register five baskets wright the guard added four points on his 1 two successful goals the game was hard fought throughout although alpha chi jbtho gained a lead at the beginning and held it during the whole con test the losing team put up a good fight and did not give in until the final whistle blew standing out as one of the big factors in the victory was the splendid floor work of bush the alpha chi rho guard it was by his clever work that a number of well planned phi sigma kappa shots were put out of play the score alpha chi rho phi sigma kappa fincke f redline j w gardy . . f henry j a gardy . . . c settle flanagan g wright bush g damiani field goals : fincke 7 ; junior : good ; sophomore : jacobs y m c a meeting interfraternity council meeting due to resignations by a few men the cast for the mustard and cheese chorus is incomplete at present four or five men are needed to fill these vacancies and are urged to see mr fraim im mediately or come to the next re hearsal in drown hall on friday night at 7 30 since coach o'neill arrived on the 22nd of last month to take the lacrosse squad in hand the weather has been anything but en couraging to these men a few days immediately after the arrival of o neill were the only ones dur ing which the squad had some real practice and during those days the men were whipped into fair shape but the recent weather has been a severe detriment however the team is going down to meet the middies with a firm determination to win it is full of pep and fight and will do its best to scuttle the hopes of the navy men last saturday the middies swamped maryland state in a vic tory of 11 to 1 and from this the strength of the southern team can be judged although the state team is not strong it was not thought that it would suffer such a defeat from the seamen the team lehigh is sending down is rather green compared to what was hoped to be sent but the green condition will be more than equaled by the determination of the team to come through the team will represent the best as far as present judgment goes that can be sent from a glance at the line-up it will be seen that all the men are letter men if confidence can be had from this score it is hard to say how the teams will match as the middies have had several games while lehigh is en tering her maiden combat on this season's schedule the probable lehigh line-up will be maurer g ; wilson p ; straub c.p enslin 3d def johnston 2<s def wey ist def jenness c ; nesselbush ist a ; shubert 2d a ; bockert 3d a ; schultz 0.h ; lewis i.h probable substitutions are beard bush davidson strauch the assistant managers out for lacrosse are : j pfeiffer l l drew h morgan c craig a a gross g m brumbaugh a b warren mining society rifle club shoots record match a meeting of the inter-fratern ity council will be held next mon day night in drown hall at this meeting the election of officers for the coming year will be held in addition to the above business there will be a discussion of rush ing rules as this is an important meeting it is desired that there be a full attendance junior class meeting mr william jay schieffelin will speak at the y m c a meeting this sunday at 6:15 p.m mr schieffenlin is a yale graduate and a prominent business man of new york city during the war he was a colonel of a regiment of new york colored troops his talk promises to be interesting and beneficial r c cope 20 will sing 1920 register ready on thursday evening the min ing engineering society held a meeting in williams hall six reels of moving pictures were shown de picting mining methods employed in the west and the recent develop ments along that line these films were compiled and taken by the united states bureau of mines who sent a commission of a number of men to examine various mining localities in the west at the close of the meeting eats and smokes were served kappa beta phi in a game played under weather conditions which would have been better for football than baseball lehigh defeated lebanon valley last wednesday afternoon by a score of 11-3 the game was hindered up to the fifth inning by flurries of snow the game opened with lees pitching for lehigh and liston catching while sheedy was at first in place of yap otherwise the line-up was the same as last satur day in the first inning lebanon val ley was disposed of in short order a ground ball and two outfield flies retiring the side lehigh opened the inning with a run after rote had popped to the pitcher dono van watched four bad ones go by and got a base on balls mathag and beck followed with hits scor ing donovan but sheedy struck out and savaria lived out i,o right for the third out lebanon valley was again re tired runless in the second al though machton got a single to center lehigh made another run in this inning douglass was safe on an error by the pitcher ; he took second on liston's sacrifice and scored on lees single both sides went out in order in the third in the fourth the visit ors made two hits but failed to score ; lehigh also failed to score in this inning although douglass got a base on balls in the fifth with one down dunkle drove out a hit but was left when wolf rolled to the pitcher and clemens foul fly was caught by douglass the home team made another run in the fifth after rote had flied out to center field and donovan had struck out mathag drove a hit to right he stole second and scored on beck's single to right center yap who took liston's place at first closed the inning by fouling to the shortstop back of third lebanon valley broke into the scoring column in the sixth by bunching two hits with a sacrifice moore scoring the run lehigh went out in order in this inning the score was tied by lebanon valley in the seventh when they scored two runs the first man up struck out ; dunkle was safe on an error by yap ; wolf struck out for the second out but clemens singled scoring dunkle a base on balls and an error by beck scored the second run lehigh scored three runs in their half of the in ning and sewed up the game after two were out donovan got a hit he stole second and scored on mathag's hit to center beck was safe on an error and both he and mathag scored on yap's hit continued on third paob although lebanon got two on in the eighth pfeiffer tightened and prevented a score the home team made the game a walkaway in the latter part of the inning by scor ing five runs kline was hit by a pitched ball ; pfeiffer lined a clean a meeting of the junior class was held wednesday for the pur pose of stimulating the sale of tickets for the class banquet to be held at the kurtz restaurant fri day evening at 7 30 o clock r a childs gave a report on the cost and plans for the banquet j r farrington spoke on the plans for the junior week and the junior prom and requested that all the members of the class since junior week is their week back it up and make it a huge success the rifle team made its highest score so far when it beat its last week's mark of 937 by five points there is only one more match in this series and it will be shot next wednesday a match is being ar ranged with rutgers to be shot off at bethlehem early in may a challenge has also been sent to la fayette and it is hoped that thej will accept so that a match may be arranged at an early date the following was the score of match no 9 : compler 192 brugman 190 ferguson 188 davenport 188 steiner 184 team 942 rehearsals for the combined musical clubs were held wednies d'ay evening and will be continued on that night until further notice in order to avoid conflict with the mustard and cheese rehearsal the glee club met in the choir room of the church of the nativity under the direction of prof shields but will meet in the chapel on the fol lowing wednesday nights every man in the clubs is asked to report at the weekly rehearsals in order to make them a success mr okeson has written to the new york le high club concerning the concert to be given by the musical clubs under their auspices but the exact date has not yet been set although it will probably be the 7th of may there are also some plans being made for a concert in pittsburgh but the latter will probably not mature this season mr okeson is making plans for the annual alumni dinner on the day after college closes and has asked the musical clubs if they will not be present at the dinner and help liven the evening the idea is to have one or two of the college activities present at the din ner every year so as to make the event one to be looked forward to year after year by the alumni when they return the mustard and cheese will probably be present at this annual dinner also the kappa beta phi club will hold a meeting at the broadway hotel after the junior banquet friday april 9th the 1920 edition of the register of lehigh university has just been issued each student of the uni versity is entitled to a copj 1 - which he may obtain by calling at the president's office students who wish copies sent to friends who are prospective stu dents should write out names and addresses of these friends and turn them in to the registrar brown and white bethlehem pa friday april 9 1920
